Book Water Quality Indices

Download or read book Water Quality Indices written by Tabassum Abbasi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-03-10 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers water quality indices (WQI) in depth – it describes what purpose they serve, how they are generated, what are their strengths and weaknesses, and how to make the best use of them. It is a concise and unique guide to WQIs for chemists, chemical/environmental engineers and government officials. Whereas it is easy to express the quantity of water, it is very difficult to express its quality because a large number of variables determine the water quality. WQIs seek to resolve the difficulty by translating a set of a large number of variables to a one-digit or a two-digit numeral. They are essential in communicating the status of different water resources in terms of water quality and the impact of various factors on it to policy makers, service personnel, and the lay public. Further they are exceedingly useful in the monitoring and management of water quality. With the importance of water and water quality increasing exponentially, the importance of this topic is also set to increase enormously because only with the use of indices is it possible to assess, express, communicate, and monitor the overall quality of any water source. Provides a concise guide to WQIs: their purpose and generation Compares existing methods and WQIs and outlines strengths and weaknesses Makes recommendations on how the indices should be used and under what circumstances they apply

Book Adaptive Catchment Management and Reservoir Operation

Download or read book Adaptive Catchment Management and Reservoir Operation written by Guangtao Fu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: River catchments and reservoirs play a central role in water security, food supply, flood risk management, hydropower generation, and ecosystem services; however, they are now under increasing pressure from population growth, economic activities, and changing climate means and extremes in many parts of the world. Adaptive management of river catchments and reservoirs requires an in-depth understanding of the impacts of future uncertainties and thus the development of robust, sustainable solutions to meet the needs of various stakeholders and the environment. To tackle the huge challenges in moving towards adaptive catchment management, this book presents the latest developments in cutting-edge knowledge, novel methodologies, innovative management strategies, and case studies, focusing on the following themes: reservoir dynamics and impact analysis of dam construction, optimal reservoir operation, climate change impacts on hydrological processes and water management, and integrated catchment management.

  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Chinese Water Systems written by TianXiang Yue and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Chinese Water Systems subseries offers up-to-date and comprehensive information on various aspects of the Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. Following a detailed introduction of the lake basin, the respective chapters present the findings of studies examining surface and subsurface hydrology, relationships between plant ecology and pollution of the wetlands, changes of land cover as well as the development of modern computational approaches to create Environmental Information Systems for water management. Moreover, the results are supplemented by a wealth of numerical calculations, tables, figures and photographs to make the research results more tangible. Closing with concise information on the “Research Centre for Environmental Information Science” (RCEIS), the book offers a valuable guide for researchers, teachers and professionals working in the areas of water environment, water security and ecological restoration. The projects have been supported by the Sino-German Centre for Science Promotion, the Helmholtz Association and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Book Ecosystems of California

Download or read book Ecosystems of California written by Harold Mooney and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 1009 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-anticipated reference and sourcebook for California’s remarkable ecological abundance provides an integrated assessment of each major ecosystem type—its distribution, structure, function, and management. A comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about this biologically diverse state, Ecosystems of California covers the state from oceans to mountaintops using multiple lenses: past and present, flora and fauna, aquatic and terrestrial, natural and managed. Each chapter evaluates natural processes for a specific ecosystem, describes drivers of change, and discusses how that ecosystem may be altered in the future. This book also explores the drivers of California’s ecological patterns and the history of the state’s various ecosystems, outlining how the challenges of climate change and invasive species and opportunities for regulation and stewardship could potentially affect the state’s ecosystems. The text explicitly incorporates both human impacts and conservation and restoration efforts and shows how ecosystems support human well-being. Edited by two esteemed ecosystem ecologists and with overviews by leading experts on each ecosystem, this definitive work will be indispensable for natural resource management and conservation professionals as well as for undergraduate or graduate students of California’s environment and curious naturalists.

Book Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates

Download or read book Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates written by David M. Rosenberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American and European governments have adopted national programs for environmental monitoring and assessment that include the use of aquatic biota. These programs will use a variety of indicators of environmental health; benthic macroinvertebrates are one of the most promising of them. The chapters in this book deal with the many different approaches available for using benthic macroinvertebrates in biological monitoring programs.

Book A Multimetric Analysis of Benthic Macroinvertebrates Present Downstream of a Small Run of the River Dam in Upstate New York

Download or read book A Multimetric Analysis of Benthic Macroinvertebrates Present Downstream of a Small Run of the River Dam in Upstate New York written by Olive Streeter Chen and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though environmental managers are increasingly turning to dam removal and alteration to mitigate the economic and environmental costs associated with their maintenance and operation, little is known about the potential environmental impacts of these management decisions as data is often not collected prior to and following implementation of changes. A biological assessment of a reach downstream of a prospective micro-hydroelectric project site was conducted in order to generate baseline data for the development of an adaptive management plan to assess the effects of small-scale hydro power projects on stream conditions. Biotic integrity of the reach downstream of the Annandale Dam (Annandale-On-Hudson, NY) and three other distinct riparian habitats along the Saw Kill were evaluated using six family-level metric indices, non-multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and indicator family analysis. Results indicated that the riparian habitats of the Saw Kill are characterized by little to no biological degradation. Multimetric index scores of the Annandale Dam were comparable to those of other good quality riparian habitats along the Saw Kill, suggesting that the presence of the dam does not substantially impair the water quality of downstream areas. Future biological assessments should focus on accounting for the effect of seasonal variation on macroinvertebrate community composition.
