Book Touching Spirit Bear

Download or read book Touching Spirit Bear written by Ben Mikaelsen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-04-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his Nautilus Award-winning classic Touching Spirit Bear, author Ben Mikaelson delivers a powerful coming-of-age story of a boy who must overcome the effects that violence has had on his life. After severely injuring Peter Driscal in an empty parking lot, mischief-maker Cole Matthews is in major trouble. But instead of jail time, Cole is given another option: attend Circle Justice, an alternative program that sends juvenile offenders to a remote Alaskan Island to focus on changing their ways. Desperate to avoid prison, Cole fakes humility and agrees to go. While there, Cole is mauled by a mysterious white bear and left for dead. Thoughts of his abusive parents, helpless Peter, and his own anger cause him to examine his actions and seek redemption—from the spirit bear that attacked him, from his victims, and, most importantly, from himself. Ben Mikaelsen paints a vivid picture of a juvenile offender, examining the roots of his anger without absolving him of responsibility for his actions, and questioning a society in which angry people make victims of their peers and communities. Touching Spirit Bear is a poignant testimonial to the power of a pain that can destroy, or lead to healing. A strong choice for independent reading, sharing in the classroom, homeschooling, and book groups.

Book excerpt: Bear Rescuer Defeating Monsters and Ensuring a Safer World for All Summary: The mysterious Greenwood woods are home to a bear that is unlike any other. The woods are full of life and whispered secrets. The "Bear Rescuer" is what everyone who knows Benny calls him. It's amazing how strong and big Benny is, but what really makes him stand out is his amazing ability to talk to every animal in the forest. The river is murmuring, animals are talking, and he can hear the leaves rustling in the wind. Benny has an amazing skill that lets him keep the peace over the beautiful area of Greenwood. Monsters show up and disturb Greenwood's peace, putting the safety and peace of the forest and its people in danger. Monsters that are misunderstood and feared make the animals angry, which leads to fights that mess up the natural order. Benny moves forward, aware of how bad things are and motivated to protect his home and close friends. His journey is filled with bravery, compassion, and the desire to learn. Benny meets many different monsters on his journey. Each one gives him a different task that tests his bravery and creativity. Instead of using force, Benny uses compassion and understanding to get to the bottom of why the monsters act the way they do at each meeting. He knows that these beings aren't always bad; they're often motivated by fear, loneliness, or a lack of understanding. Through friendly talk and actions, Benny can turn these scary animals into friends and his scary enemies into forest guardians. One thing that Benny's story shows is how strong togetherness and understanding can be. He shows that being brave can look like many things, such as listening to others and helping them out with kindness instead of using force. All of Benny's efforts not only keep Greenwood safe, but they also make the neighborhood a better place for all animals, big and small. The touching story of Benny, the Bear Rescuer, shows how important it is to understand and care about others, how beautiful diversity is, and how strong ties can be when we choose to accept and understand each other. The beautiful forest of Greenwood is peaceful because of a bear with a big heart and even bigger goals. Chapter 1: The Bear Benny One bear named Benny had a unique personality. He lived in the Greenwood forest, which was full of tall trees and sparkling streams. Benny was more than just a bear, so everyone in the forest looked up to and respected him. Everyone and everything liked Benny, from the tiny ant crawling on the forest floor to the huge eagles flying high above the trees. This was because he had a huge, fluffy body and an even bigger heart. What really made Benny stand out, though, was his amazing ability to talk to every animal in the forest. Because of his special skill, Benny was the bear in Greenwood who people went to when they needed to solve problems or keep the peace. Benny woke up one beautiful morning to the sound of birds singing as the sun came up and lit up the thick forest canopy. The song that started the day wasn't the same catchy tune as before, though. The buzzing was tense, urgent, and full of stress. Benny was shocked, so he stood up and walked toward the sound. He got closer and saw that the birds were crying out for help instead of singing. They talked about monsters and other strange beings that would come out of nowhere in the forest and put their nests and young at risk. Benny had a strong desire to be with his feathery friends. He was aware of what he had to do. He took strong steps to deal with the invaders. Because he was strong-willed and had a strong sense of right and wrong, Benny wasn't scared. He was ready to stand up for his friends and protect their houses. He made his way through the bush with the help of other animals after hearing about the birds' problem. Rabbits jumped together, squirrels ran next to him, and even a deer joined in. It showed how honest Benny was and how much respect he had in the forest community. It was scary to think about Greenwood having monsters. There was a delicate balance between all the living things in the forest, and it had always been a peaceful and harmonious place to be. Benny was interested in these things. Where did they go? Were they just misunderstood? Without fail, Benny's main goal was to protect the birds and their babies. He knew that worry and fear would not help them get through this. Instead, understanding and courage would. As Benny got closer to the place where the birds said they had seen the aliens, he got ready for what was to come. He thought about how his parents had taught him to be brave and love others. Benny wanted to keep his house safe and make sure no one was scared. He didn't want to hurt or scare anyone. Benny the Bear showed that real power comes from caring about others and wanting to protect them by facing whatever was coming with the help of the whole forest. Benny wasn't just a bear in the Greenwood forest; he was everyone's friend, protector, and hero. Chapter 2: About the first Monster. Benny saw something that shocked and motivated him as he continued to explore the Greenwood forest, following the birds' crazy tweeting. A monster trying to climb a tall tree was the cause of all the chaos. It was in a clearing with some sunshine. This animal was different from any other wild animal Benny had seen. It looked up at the bird nests high in the trees and wrapped its long, loose arms and legs around the trunk in a strange way. Since Benny knew what the monster was up to, he knew he couldn't let it hurt the helpless birds and their eggs that were about to hatch. Benny walked into the open area without giving it much thought. Putting down a big shadow on the ground, he stood very tall. Benny then called on all of his strength with a loud roar. There was a loud, booming sound in the woods that made the leaves on the trees shake and sent birds flying high into the air. The beast was caught off guard by Benny's sudden appearance and loud roar, which made it lose its hold on the tree. The thing slid backwards and landed softly on the ground in the woods. It looked surprised and confused. As the dust cleared, Benny walked up to the dead animal. His heart was racing, but he knew what he wanted to do. When he looked up at the beast with its wide, scared eyes, he realized it wasn't as scary as he had thought. It was impossible for Benny to avoid a certain weakness. Right now, Benny learned something important that would change how he acts for the rest of the day. He learned that bravery and kindness were much stronger tools than strength and size. It is possible for them to change things, turning enemies into friends and keeping the weak safe.

Book In the Company of Bears

    Book Details:
  • Author : Benjamin Kilham
  • Publisher : Chelsea Green Publishing
  • Release : 2014-09-01
  • ISBN : 1603586008
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book In the Company of Bears written by Benjamin Kilham and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In In the Company of Bears, originally published in hardcover as Out on a Limb, Ben Kilham invites us into the world he has come to know best: the world of black bears. For decades, Kilham has studied wild black bears in a vast tract of Northern New Hampshire woodlands. At times, he has also taken in orphaned infants–feeding them, walking them through the forest for months to help them decipher their natural world, and eventually reintroducing them back into the wild. Once free, the orphaned bears still regard him as their mother. And one of these bears, now a 17-year-old female, has given him extraordinary access to her daily life, opening a rare window into how she and the wild bears she lives among carry out their daily lives, raise their young, and communicate. Witnessing this world has led to some remarkable discoveries. For years, scientists have considered black bears to be mostly solitary. Kilham's observations, though, reveal the extraordinary interactions wild bears have with each other. They form friendships and alliances; abide by a code of conduct that keeps their world orderly; and when their own food supplies are ample, they even help out other bears in need. Could these cooperative behaviors, he asks, mimic behavior that existed in the animal that became human? In watching bears, do we see our earliest forms of communications unfold? Kilham's dyslexia once barred him from getting an advanced academic degree, securing funding for his research, and publishing his observations in the scientific literature. After being shunned by the traditional scientific community, though, Kilham’s unique findings now interest bear researchers worldwide. His techniques even aid scientists working with pandas in China and bears in Russia. Moreover, the observation skills that fueled Kilham’s exceptional work turned out to be born of his dyslexia. His ability to think in pictures and decipher systems makes him a unique interpreter of the bear's world. In the Company of Bears delivers Kilham’s fascinating glimpse at the inner world of bears, and also makes a passionate case for science, and education in general, to open its doors to different ways of learning and researching–doors that could lead to far broader realms of discovery.
