On August 16, 1777, the Green Mountain Boys and militia from surrounding states defeated British troops at the Battle of Bennington. Like other small towns in New England, this agricultural community soon found its waterways dominated by large factories. When manufacturing declined in the early 1900s, the town reinvented itself as a tourist destination. Postcards promoting local scenery, quaint covered bridges, bustling downtown streets, modern amenities, and significant historic sites explained the towns importance to travelers and fostered local pride.

Download or read book The Battle of Bennington Soldiers Civilians written by Michael P. Gabriel and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02-20 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 16, 1777, a motley militia won a resounding victory near Bennington, Vermont, against combined German, British and Loyalist forces. This laid the foundation for the American victory at Saratoga two months later. Historian Michael P. Gabriel has collected over fifty firsthand accounts from the people who experienced this engagement, including veterans from both sides and civilians--women and children who witnessed the horrors of the battle. Gabriel also details a virtually unknown skirmish between Americans and Loyalists. These accounts, along with Gabriel's overviews of the battle, bring to life the terror, fear and uncertainty that caused thousands to see the British army as loved ones departed to fight for the fledgling United States.

Book Memorials of a Century Embracing a Record of Individuals and Events Chiefly in the Early History of Bennington Vt

Download or read book Memorials of a Century Embracing a Record of Individuals and Events Chiefly in the Early History of Bennington Vt written by Isaac Jennings and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of a Century Embracing a Record of Individuals and Events Chiefly in the Early History of Bennington, Vt: And Its First Church The foundation of this volume is the discourse delivered at the Centennial Celebration of the organization of the Bennington First Church, the publication of which was requested by the note on the preceding page. The first nine chapters are, without essential modification, the discourse. Some account of the centennial celebration and the conclusion of the discourse make up chapter twenty-six. In view of publication, four subjects presented themselves for a more complete consideration than the writer had given to them, namely: the land-title controversy; the Bennington battle; the individual men and women of Bennington in the past times; and the Separatist antecedents of many of the first inhabitants, together with their promotion of civil liberty as to public worship. Hence so many pages devoted to these subjects, and a volume instead of a discourse. The writer has been in various ways much assisted by numerous kind friends of the work.
