Book excerpt: Excerpt from Benjamin Franklin and Jonathan Edwards: Selections From Their Writings Significance may justly be attached to the difference between the social classes from which the two sprang, and perhaps to the difference between their native colonies. Edwards, the senior by three years, was born in 17 03 at East Windsor, Connecticut, a compact and orthodox par ish of the most oak-hearted of all the Puritan states. Franklin, on the other hand, passed his first seventeen years in Boston, exposed to the liberal winds which gen erally blow, much or little, even in provincial Puritan metropolises. Moreover, Franklin came from plain tradesman or artisan stock, which boasted - or rather, did not boast - a versifying scion or two, but which had had no clergymen or magistrates. Edwards had in him the blood of both those professions, and was bred in the strict est paths of orthodoxy and responsibility. While Frank lin was being taken about by his thrifty father to see the various trades that he might discover a partiality for some one of them, Edwards was already in Yale, being confirmed in the clerical disposition which was his birth right and fate. The Autobiography has a classic passage upon Frank lin's youthful reading and writing, and upon the careful pains the boy took to form his prose style. He passed somewhat casually by his father's books Of divinity, and rapidly devoured such Virtuous romance and history as came his way, but at sixteen or so he read Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Xenophon's Memo rabilia, Shaftesbury, and Collins. Becoming a free thinker, he studied, as an aid to argument, the Socratic method of humble, though premeditated, inquiry never using, when I advanced anything that may pos sibly be disputed, the words certainly, undoubtedly, or any others that give the air of positiveness to an Opinion. His work as a printer, civic reformer, institution builder, scientist, inventer, writer, self-help dispenser, politician, and statesmen was deeply rooted in the culture and outlook that Protestantism nurtured. Through its alternatives to medieval church and society, Protestants built societies and instilled habits of character and mind that allowed figures such as Franklin to build the life that he did. Through it all, Franklin could not assent to all of Protestantism's doctrines or observe its worship, but for most of his life he acknowledged his debt to his creator, revelled in the natural world guided by providence, and conducted himself in a way (imperfectly) to merit divine approval. In this biography, D. G. Hart recognizes Franklin as a cultural or non-observant Protestant, someone who thought of himself as a Presbyterian, ordered his life as other Protestants did, sometimes went to worship services, read his Bible, and prayed, but could not go all the way and join a church.

He received his long-awaited permission from Congress to return home; accepted the king's parting gift of a miniature portrait surrounded by diamonds; settled his accounts; and arranged passage for himself and his two grandsons on a ship bound from England to Philadelphia. Franklin instructed the French government on the culinary uses of maize and wrote a lengthy "eye-witness" account of China that includes directions for making tofu. His last public act in France was signing the Prussian-American Treaty of Commerce, which contained three unprecedented articles: the two he wrote in 1782 guaranteeing protections during wartime for noncombatants, and a third guaranteeing humane treatment for prisoners of war. On the English coast, Franklin met with his Loyalist son William and witnessed William's signing over his American property to his son William Temple Franklin. Aboard the London Packet, Franklin wrote three scientific papers, including the copiously illustrated "Maritime Observations." His original line drawings are reproduced here for the first time. The volume ends with an appendix containing supplementary documents from the French mission.
