Book excerpt: In the Australian psyche, the Gallipoli campaign is the action on Gallipoli Peninsula. But an important addition to that land campaign was the part played by the Australian submarine HMAS AE2. The AE2 achieved a daring passage through the Dardanelles on 25 April 1915 when Anzac troops were landing on the other side at Anzac Cove. The Royal and French navies' previous attempts at passage had ended in disaster. AE2's mission to 'run amuck' ended after five days in the Sea of Marmara when it was caught by the Turkish Sultanhisar torpedo boat. After being holed, AE2's captain Stoker scuttled the submarine and its crew were saved by Sultanhisar's captain, Ali Riza. Beneath the Dardanelles tells AE2's story from both the Australian and Turkish perspectives, and features extracts from the memoirs of the two captains. Rarely in military books are both sides of a battle presented so evenly. The submarine lay undiscovered on the bottom of the sea until 1998 and awaits its destiny as the largest historical Australian relic of the Gallipoli campaign. The future of AE2 will be newsworthy for years to come and this book makes an important contribution to that story.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the Royal Navy Submarine Service in 1901, 173 submarines have been lost and in many circumstances with their entire crew. War inevitably takes a heavy toll: in World War Two alone – 341 officer and 2,801 ratings failed to return to harbour. The loss of personnel was roughly equivalent to the strength of the Submarine Arm at the outbreak of war. Between the first loss, A1 in 1904, and the last, Artemis in 1971, lie many stories in which cool nerve was very much in evidence and one can marvel at the escape of the only survivor of Perseus; and of the sinking of Olympus from which the few survivors had to swim seven miles before receiving help; and of Surgeon-Lieutenant Charles Rhodes who died that others may live. These and many other accounts of submarine escape are described within this history – and whenever possible in the words of survivors or witnesses.

Book Straits of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus

Download or read book Straits of the Dardanelles and the Bosphorus written by Walter Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Straits of the Dardanelles, and the Bosphorus: The Right of Way Under International Law Nor does there seem to be much that is objection able in this arrangement, which has merely for its motive the restoration of the commercial relations which previously existed between the subjects of the Czar and of the Sultan; but the effect of all the stipulations of that treaty combined would be serious in the extreme, as it would make of the Black Sea a Russian lake, actually making it sub jcet to the rule of one despotic will, instead of placing it under the protection of a just and equal law. The Preliminary Treaty, however, is fortunately as yet wholly without juridical sanction, for although the war put an end to treaties as between the two belligerents themselves, yet, inasmuch as these belli gerents had some years ago entered into treaty engagements with other Powers, no new stipulations contravening those previous engagements can be valid until ratified by all the signatory Powers. It is obvious that Russia cannot plead special immunity from the observance of treaties, and, whilst herself flagrantly violating them, hold England bound toobserve every clause to the letter. Nevertheless this very Power, after menacing Constantinople with the presence of its armies, and thereby forcing the Government of this country to despatch the fleet into the Sea of Marmora, now ventures to com plain of that act as a contravention of the Treaties of 1856 and 1871, because, forsooth, it lacks the formality of a firman from the Sultan, although it is difficult to conceive how the Sultan could now be regarded as a sufficiently free agent to either give or to withhold his consent. In fact, in dealing with a State or person in such a condition of duresse as to amount to positive disability, consent to further the performance of all just and necessary acts, must be assumed, and therefore need not be required, and by the same deduction the English Government would be equally justified in ordering the fleet through the Bosphorus into the Black Sea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the First World War’s largest seaborne invasion and the Irish were at the forefront. Recruited in Ireland, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were ordered to spearhead the invasion of Gallipoli in Turkey. Deadlocked in trench warfare on the Western Front, the British High Command hoped the assault would knock Germany’s ally out of the war. Using letters and photographs, this book tells the story of the ‘Dubs’ officers and men as they set off on what was presented as a great adventure to win glory and capture Constantinople. Accompanied by the Royal Munster Fusiliers, packed aboard the SS River Clyde, the ‘Dubs’ landed from ships’ boats on the fiercely defended beach at Sedd-el-Bahr. The song The Foggy Dew says, ‘It were better to die beneath an Irish sky than at Suvla or Sedd-el-Bahr.’ This book tells the story of the forgotten Irishmen who died beneath a Turkish sky in what was Ireland’s D-Day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Booklist called A Double Death on the Black Isle, “a stunner…with lots of action, lots of atmosphere.” Now the acclaimed mystery series about a newspaper staff in a 1950s Highlands town continues—everything is quiet and quaint until one of their own is murdered. The third lyrical, evocative, and character-driven entry in A.D. Scott's mystery series set in the 1950s in the Scottish Highlands. As a decade of change comes to a close, murder hists close to home in a small Scottish town... On a dark, damp Sunday evening, a man taking a shortcut home sees a hand reaching out in supplication from a bundle of sacks. In an instant he knows something terrifying has happened. In the Highlands in the late 1950s, much of the local newspaper’s success was due to Mrs. Smart, the no-nonsense office manager who kept everything and everyone in line. Her murder leaves her colleagues in shock and the Highland Gazette office in chaos. Joanne Ross, a budding reporter and shamefully separated mother, assumes Mrs. Smart’s duties, but an intriguing stranger provides a distraction not only from the job and the investigation but from everything Joanne believes in. Beneath the Abbey Wall brilliantly evokes a place still torn between the safety of the past and the uncertainty of the future, when rock ’n’ roll and television invaded homes, and a change in attitudes still came slowly for many. As the staff of the Highland Gazette probes the crime, they uncover secrets deeply rooted in the past, and their friend’s murder becomes the perfect fodder for strife and division in the town and between her colleagues.

Book Under Fire in the Dardanelles

Download or read book Under Fire in the Dardanelles written by Kira Charatan and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2006-02-20 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Cadogan kept a record of his war in words and photographs. His baptism by fire in Gallipoli made a profound effect on him but, as the situation deteriorated and casualties mounted, he became highly critical of the plan and the leadership. His front line experiences are balanced by his contact with senior commanders. Wounded and clearly in poor health he was fortunate to survive. After the ignominious withdrawal, Cadogan soldiered on in Egypt and Palestine increasingly disenchanted with the conduct of the War. His descriptions of conditions at the Front are complemented by his interest in family affairs at home. This compilation is not only superb military history but a unique piece of social commentary.
