Book excerpt: Canberra is Australia's capital city. Developed according to the detailed plans produced by Walter Burley Griffin, Canberra's wide avenues and long vistas were designed to give prominence to the city's important government buildings and showcase the dignity of the nation's capital. Although it was a very quiet place for the first few decades of its existence, Canberra has now developed into a vibrant city, with business, shopping and entertainment precincts. Most visitors to Canberra are unaware that it could have been called Eureka or Britannia, or that sheep farming continued within the city's boundaries for many years after the first Parliament House was built. This book includes these stories as well as many others from the history of Canberra, and there is also a chapter on the Westminster System of government.

Book Bioassessment of Freshwater Ecosystems

Download or read book Bioassessment of Freshwater Ecosystems written by Robert Converse Bailey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantifying the effect(s) of human-induced changes on aquatic ecosystems is a fundamental objective in ecological assessment, and one that often requires the use of a reference condition. Because of the widespread degradation of many aquatic ecosystems, finding pristine or even minimally disturbed reference sites can be a challenging (read frustrating) and costly endeavour. This book gives a comprehensive description of present-day concepts and practices in working with the use of references in quantifying departures from conditions expected with no or only minimal anthropogenic effects.

Book Bioassessment of Freshwater Ecosystems

Download or read book Bioassessment of Freshwater Ecosystems written by Robert C. Bailey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic ecosystem assessment is a rapidly developing field, and one of the newer approaches to assessing the condition of rivers and lakes is the Reference Condition Approach. This is a significant advancement in biomonitoring because it solves the problem of trying to locate nearby control or reference sites when studying an ecosystem that may be degraded, a problem that bedevils traditional approaches. Rather than using upstream reference sites in a river system or next-bay-over reference sites in a lake, an array of ecologically similar, least-exposed to stress sites scattered throughout a catchment or region is used. Once the reference condition has been established, any site suspected of being impacted can be assessed by comparison to the reference sites, and its status determined. The Reference Condition database, once formed, can be used repeatedly.

Book excerpt: This is Lori Patrick’s life story. The story starts with Lori’s dairy farming childhood during World War II, outlining her parents’ struggles raising eight children during tough times. After a stint working on the farm, Lori moves to the bright lights of the city and into the family of her future husband Barrie Patrick who she met working at the Queensland Times newspaper. Barrie’s family led a flamboyant lifestyle in stark contrast to her own. Barrie’s father Ern was the Queensland Times editor and his mother Eva, the effervescent life of the party. They introduced Lori to new experiences, including holidaying on Noosa’s Hastings Street when it was a strip of bitumen in the sand. After they wed, Lori and Barrie went in search of success in Outback Queensland where they worked as a ringer and governess and later went on to buy the famous Blue Heeler Hotel in Kynuna. The pub tested their strength, but they overcome adversities to put the town on the map as a tourist destination. The main attraction was their home-grown entertainment that included Barrie holding up tourist coaches with a shotgun and cracking a cigarette out of Lori’s mouth, often for the benefit of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. This all came to an end when they buried their 20-year-old son who was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic event was too much and they returned to South-East Queensland. Following Barrie’s death, Lori went on to travel the world and continue her search for personal success.
