Book excerpt: The Power of Kindness A simple act of kindness can brighten someone's day. It can be what they remember about that day, what they talk about. More often than not, it will inspire them to act, to carry forward the beauty of that moment. One simple act can create a chain reaction of shared acts of kindness - that is what this book is all about. Consider the people that cross your path each day -- family, friends, co-workers, grocery clerks, a gas station attendant, barber or hairdresser. Each contact, no matter how fleeting, presents an opportunity to make a difference. It can be as simple as the words you choose, the smile you shine or a quiet gesture you make. When you are guided by your heart in each of your daily encounters you are more present in the moment, more in tune with the people you meet and more connected to the world around you. This is among the greatest gifts you can give to others and to yourself. "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." - John Quincy Adams Inspiring others to act begins with doing for others. Positive connections with people have a direct impact on how we feel about ourselves. Sharing that feeling with others creates a wonderful spirit and enthusiasm that is both contagious and powerful.

Organizations simply cannot afford runaway medical expenses, unproductive workplaces, and sick workers. In this landmark book, Dee W. Edington, PhD, former Director of the University of Michigan Health Management Research Center, draws from his 30 years of research and experience to explain how organizations can control health management and disability expenditures while keeping their workforces healthy and productive. Dr. Edington's message is straightforward, yet profound. His three key strategies, "Don't Get Worse," "Keep Healthy Employees Healthy," and "Create a Culture of Health," can help reduce the healthcare and productivity-related costs that are bankrupting American businesses. Book Bending the Curve

    Book Details:
  • Author : R W Murphy
  • Publisher : Aqua Clara Press
  • Release : 2019-06-20
  • ISBN : 9781732333185
  • Pages : 60 pages

Download or read book Bending the Curve written by R W Murphy and published by Aqua Clara Press. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this short book R.W. Murphy makes the argument that the US healthcare delivery system is irreparably broken as the result of a perfectly inelastic demand curve for healthcare goods and services. In essence, he indicates that Americans will buy the same number of units regardless of price and that is destroying the system. He points to all the retail level cost control initiatives to date as failing to address wholesale pricing pressures. His premise is that underlying wholesale cost increases have hardly been affected at all. Any cost reductions at the retail level resulting from tough utilization management have been no more than temporary "stair step" efforts that get quickly absorbed. He offers both historical perspective and going-forward options for structural change. He refers to the need to make the demand curve more price responsive as an "American Healthcare Imperative" because the inevitable alternative is serious damage to American society in its absence. He indicates that failing to act is no longer an option. R.W. Murphy has been involved in healthcare cost control since 1980. He started his career as a home office underwriter for a major US healthcare insurance company. In 1990 he became a consultant for an international firm and in 1995 formed his owned consulting company. He has been involved in virtually every cost control initiative in the last forty years - and by his own admission, has the scars to prove it. The book has been made deliberately short. It can be read in less than an hour. The author indicates that his intent has been to make Americans think about the necessity for structural change - not give them an actual road map for it. As such, he remains relatively nonpartisan regarding the options. He also is clear that he has spent less time in doing statistical research then using his professional experience to show relationships. He tells the reader to not be caught up in absolute numbers but to instead examine the historical and projected trends. The Introduction has been written under an alias by a professional healthcare administrator in West Palm Beach, Florida. By remaining anonymous, he offers candid opinions with which peer administrators might not agree. His comments come from perspective gained via vast experience on the provider side of the industry. In addition, his politics are significantly right of the author's. As such, his views provide germane counterpoint. As more a red-flag then a how-to book, at its price point it should be read by every person who believes that healthcare policy will be an important differentiating factor in the 2020 US election.

Book Cracking Health Costs

Download or read book Cracking Health Costs written by Tom Emerick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cracking Health Costs reveals the best ways for companies and small businesses to fight back, right now, against rising health care costs. This book proposes multiple, practical steps that you can take to control costs and increase the effectiveness of the health benefit. The book is all about rolling back health care costs to save companies and employees money. Working hand-in-hand with their employees, businesses need to ensure that, whenever feasible, employees with the most expensive diagnoses get optimal treatment at hospitals not practicing “volume-driven” medicine for higher profits. Less than 10% of employees incur 80% of costs. About 20% of patients have been completely misdiagnosed, while many others are simply the victims of surgeons who are either practicing bad medicine or overtreating for profit. For example, some companies, such as Walmart and Lowe’s, are turning to the “Centers of Excellence” approach author Tom Emerick helped to pioneer while running benefits for Walmart. By determining which hospitals are adopting the highest standards of care, benefits managers can reduce the number of unnecessary high-cost surgeries and improve employees’ overall health. The solution-based approach offered by the book is unique, because it can be implemented by businesses today.

Download or read book The Healthcare Imperative written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has the highest per capita spending on health care of any industrialized nation but continually lags behind other nations in health care outcomes including life expectancy and infant mortality. National health expenditures are projected to exceed $2.5 trillion in 2009. Given healthcare's direct impact on the economy, there is a critical need to control health care spending. According to The Health Imperative: Lowering Costs and Improving Outcomes, the costs of health care have strained the federal budget, and negatively affected state governments, the private sector and individuals. Healthcare expenditures have restricted the ability of state and local governments to fund other priorities and have contributed to slowing growth in wages and jobs in the private sector. Moreover, the number of uninsured has risen from 45.7 million in 2007 to 46.3 million in 2008. The Health Imperative: Lowering Costs and Improving Outcomes identifies a number of factors driving expenditure growth including scientific uncertainty, perverse economic and practice incentives, system fragmentation, lack of patient involvement, and under-investment in population health. Experts discussed key levers for catalyzing transformation of the delivery system. A few included streamlined health insurance regulation, administrative simplification and clarification and quality and consistency in treatment. The book is an excellent guide for policymakers at all levels of government, as well as private sector healthcare workers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An outstanding book . . . documents how the VA’s system of integrative care outperforms the models used by private insurers.” —USW Blog (United Steelworkers) NEW EDITION, REVISED AND UPDATED Phillip Longman tells the amazing story of the turnaround of the Department of Veterans Affairs health-care system from a dysfunctional, scandal-prone bureaucracy into the benchmark for high-quality medicine in the United States. Best Care Anywhere shows that vast swaths of what we think we know about health, health care, and medical economics are just plain wrong. And the book demonstrates how this extraordinarily cost-effective model, which has proven to be highly popular with veterans, can be made available to everyone. New to this edition is an analysis of how the shortcomings of both so-called Obamacare and Republican plans to privatize Medicare reinforce the need for applying the lessons of the VA. Also included are completely updated statistics and research, as well as examples of how the private sector is already beginning to learn from the VA’s example. “Among the most important social policy books published in the last decade.” —Ezra Klein, The Washington Post “Read Best Care Anywhere not just to learn about one of our public health agencies that is a global star in terms of cost effective, evidence-based results, but also to learn how your own health care process can be improved by adopting the Veterans Health Administration’s methodology for transparency and patient-centered care.” —New York Journal of Books

Book Bending the Cost Curve in Health Care

Download or read book Bending the Cost Curve in Health Care written by Gregory P. Marchildon and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through Canadian and international perspectives, Bending the Cost Curve in Health Care explores the management of growing health costs in an extraordinarily complex arena. The book moves beyond previous debates, agreeing that while efficiencies and better value for money may yet be found, more fundamental reforms to the management and delivery of health services are essential prerequisites to bending the cost curve in the long run. While there is considerable controversy over direction and details of change, there also remains the challenge of getting agreement on the values or principles that would guide the reshaping of the policies, the structures, and the regulatory environment of health care in Canada. Leading experts from around the world representing a range of disciplines and professional backgrounds come together to organize and define the problems faced by policy-makers. Case studies from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Nordic countries, and industrialized Asian countries such as Taiwan offer useful reform experiences for provincial governments in Canada. Finally, common Canadian cost factors, such as pharmaceuticals and technology, and paying the health workforce, are explored. This book is the first volume in The Johnson-Shoyama Series on Public Policy, published by the University of Toronto Press in association with the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, an interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching, and executive training with campuses at the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan.

  • Pages : 638 pages

Download or read book Dying in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For patients and their loved ones, no care decisions are more profound than those made near the end of life. Unfortunately, the experience of dying in the United States is often characterized by fragmented care, inadequate treatment of distressing symptoms, frequent transitions among care settings, and enormous care responsibilities for families. According to this report, the current health care system of rendering more intensive services than are necessary and desired by patients, and the lack of coordination among programs increases risks to patients and creates avoidable burdens on them and their families. Dying in America is a study of the current state of health care for persons of all ages who are nearing the end of life. Death is not a strictly medical event. Ideally, health care for those nearing the end of life harmonizes with social, psychological, and spiritual support. All people with advanced illnesses who may be approaching the end of life are entitled to access to high-quality, compassionate, evidence-based care, consistent with their wishes. Dying in America evaluates strategies to integrate care into a person- and family-centered, team-based framework, and makes recommendations to create a system that coordinates care and supports and respects the choices of patients and their families. The findings and recommendations of this report will address the needs of patients and their families and assist policy makers, clinicians and their educational and credentialing bodies, leaders of health care delivery and financing organizations, researchers, public and private funders, religious and community leaders, advocates of better care, journalists, and the public to provide the best care possible for people nearing the end of life.
