Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben Jonson and Shakespeare Now if this statement is intended to mean (and I can assign no other reasonable significance to the words) that we know more about the life of Shakspere of Strat ford than we know about that of any poet contemporary with him, there is an audacity about it which is really quite sublime; indeed the proverbial one step between the sublime and the ridiculous seems here to have entirely disappeared. Book Ben Jonson s Plays Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ben Jonson s Plays Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Ben Jonson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 The greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality as sumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age. Ben Jonson came of the stock that was centuries after to give to the world Thomas Carlyle; for Jonson's grandfather was of Annandale, over the Solway, whence he migrated to England. Jonson's father lost his estate under Queen Mary, having been cast into prison and forfeited. He entered the church, but died a month before his illustrious son was born, leaving his widow and child in poverty. Jonson's birthplace was Westminster, and the time of his birth early in 1573. He was thus nearly ten years Shakespeare's junior, and less well off, if a trifle better born. But Jonson did not profit even by this slight advantage. His mother married beneath her, a wright or bricklayer, and Jonson was for a time apprenticed to the trade. As a youth he attracted the attention of the famous antiquary, William Camden, then usher at Westminster School, and there the poet laid the solid foundations of his classical learning. Jonson always held Camden in veneration, acknowledging that to him he owed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jonson Allusion-Book: A Collection of Allusions to Ben Jonson From 1597 to 1700 Moreover, in the period following the Restoration the editors have had to exercise a certain discretion in condensing allusions and passing over those possessing little or no significance. Most of these, however, have been collected, and, if the opportunity offers, may later be published by way of a supplement. Perhaps it should be added that the numerous jingling rhymes printed by W. R. Chetwood in his Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Ben Jonson, 1756, have been entirely ignored; Chetwood cites no authority for them, and they seem to be crude fabrications of his own Muse. Mr. Bradley originally undertook the task of gathering these allusions in the preparation of a doctoral dissertation at Cornell University, and to him belongs the major credit of collecting and transcribing the passages. Later Mr. Adams became associated with him in the labor, and assumed specifically the responsibility of editing the material for the reader. It has not always been easy to fix the dates of the passages quoted, or to identify the authors; and in dealing with such a mass of detail, it has doubtless been impossible to escape errors. For all such defects the editors crave the indulgence of scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Shakespeare and His Fellows

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare and His Fellows: An Attempt to Decipher, the Man and His Nature 'All that we know of Shakespeare is that he was born at Stratford-on-Avon, married, and had children there; went to London, where he commenced actor, and wrote plays and poems; returned to Stratford, made his will, and died.' These words, written by Steevens, served for more than a century as a fair summary of the events in the life of Shakespeare, so far as they were then known. But the pious labours of succeeding generations have added so much to our stock of knowledge that a presentment of the life of Shakespeare is now possible, not, indeed, complete in all respects, but far in advance of earlier efforts. 'An investigation extending over two centuries has brought together a mass of detail which far exceeds that accessible in the case of any other contemporary professional writer.' Book The Cult of Shakespeare Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cult of Shakespeare Classic Reprint written by F. E. Halliday and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cult of Shakespeare The Cult of Shakespeare is a survey (not over-solemn, I hope) of the fortunes of Shakespeare from the time of his death to the present day; an account of the rise of bardolatry and the more frenzied excesses of the devotees of his cult: of the liberties that have been taken with his work and the follies that have been committed in his name. Few people, I think, are fully aware of this history and of the power of the spell that the great name has exercised throughout the centuries. Yet, when the Stuarts were restored to the throne in 1660 there was no magic in the name. Even before the theatres were closed in I Shakespeare had been overshadowed by Beaumont and Fletcher and Ben Jonson, and when they were reopened at the Restoration he was remembered not very vividly as a once-popular dramatist Who wrote before the age of enlightenment. His plays as they Stood were unacceptable to an age polished by its contact with France, but, as there was a dearth of new drama after twenty years Without demand, they might be made to serve if skilfully adapted. And so we get the refined classical versions of Davenant, those strange outrageous hybrids with which the modern popularity of Shakespeare began. The refining process was continued by Dryden, Tate, Cibber and others, until at the beginning of the Georgian era poets and scholars began to return to what Shakespeare had really written, and to wrangle about the restora tion of his text. The pope-theobald-warburton-hanmer squabble is not the least diverting episode in this history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
