Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Williams: The Father of Exponential Imagination is a comprehensive career spanning, comprehensive collection of the iconic painter’s fine art, including every one of his remarkable oil paintings along with a presentation of his drawings, sculptures, and works in other media. Simply put, this is the art book of the decade, and the book that Williams has been working toward his entire career. In the late 20th and early 21st century, diverse forms of commonplace and popular art appeared to be coalescing into a formidable faction of new painted realism. The new school of imagery was a product of art that didn’t fit comfortably into the accepted definition of fine art. It embraced some of the figurative graphics that formal art academia tended to reject: comic books, movie posters, trading cards, surfer art, hot rod illustration, to mention a few. This alternative art movement found its most apt participant in one of America’s most controversial underground artists, the painter, Robert Williams. It was this artist who brought the term “lowbrow” into the fine arts lexicon, with his groundbreaking 1979 book, The Lowbrow Art of Robt. Williams. Williams pursued a career as a fine arts painter years before joining the art studio of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth in the mid-1960s. From this position he moved into the rebellious, anti-war circles of early underground comix, as one of the celebrated ZAP cartoonists. Featuring an introductory essay by Coagula Art Journal founder Mat Gleason along with a new art manifesto and foreword by Williams himself, as well as tons of rare photos and ephemera.

Book Alfredo Arregu n

  • Author : Lauro Flores
  • Publisher : Jacob Lawrence Series on Ameri
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9780295987347
  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Alfredo Arregu n written by Lauro Flores and published by Jacob Lawrence Series on Ameri. This book was released on 2007 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Mexico in 1935 and a resident of Washington State for nearly five decades, Alfredo Arreguín has long been recognized as a major force in pattern painting. His canvases are tapestries that mingle diverse and interpenetrating influences and images: the traditional crafts of his native Michoacán; the lush rainforests of his homeland and of the Pacific Northwest; Japanese ukiyo-e prints; sacred and endangered animals; gods and and totemic figures; icons like Frida Kahlo and César Chávez; and motifs including masks, eyes, and abstractly patterned tiles. But Arreguin’s paintings, for all the apparent flatness of their surfaces, conceal an astonishing depth of perspective. The basis of their composition is a grid of colorful patterns applied to superimposed planes, and below the surface of each completed painting are many others, transformed by the artist’s strategic occlusions and erasures. The result is an exuberant, phosphorescent visual interplay in which images combine to form other images, yielding a potent narrative power and pointing up the profound, ambiguous symbiosis between human beings and nature, fiction and reality, and the natural and supernatural worlds. Lauro Flores reveals Alfredo Arreguin as "a genuinely American painter, in the real, hemispheric sense of this term" - an artist of magic, mystery, and revelation whose place in the history of North American art has already been secured. Twenty-three new paintings are included in the second edition of this highly regarded book first published in 2002.

  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book Sprawltown written by Richard Ingersoll and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sprawl. The word calls to mind a host of troublesome issues such as city flight, runaway suburban development, and the conversion of farmland to soulless housing developments. In Sprawltown, architectural historian Richard Ingersoll makes the surprising claim that sprawl is an inevitable reality of modern life that should be addressed more thoughtfully and recognized as its own new form of urbanism rather than simply being criticized and condemned. In five thought-provoking chapters, covering topics such as tourism, film, and the automobile, Ingersoll takes the position that any solution to the problems of sprawl—including pressing issues like resource use and energy waste—must take into consideration its undeniable success as a social milieu. No screed against the suburb, this book offers a more sophisticated and nuanced view of the way we think about its rapid development and growth.
