Book Belgium the Making of a Nation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Belgium the Making of a Nation Classic Reprint written by Herman Vander Linden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium, the Making of a Nation To say the truth, it is by no means easy to free oneself from the tyrannous obsession of the present, to escape from the atmosphere of fever or exaltation in which we live, and which impels us to regard Belgium as the pivot of European evolution. No land, it is true, possesses a more international history a fact which has been brought out with wonderful skill by Henri Pirenne - and it is not paradoxical to assert that one of the characteristics of Belgian nationality is internationalism.' While bearing these results in mind as scientifically true, I have devoted myself to the task of finding out the ruling factors of our internal history, and selecting by preference as the landmarks of different periods, not the changes which, resulting in general from European conflicts, have affected the reigning houses, but the distinctive phenomena of social life. In common with the other States of the West, Belgium only achieved political consistency in the fifteenth century, but her national character was formed during the course of the Middle Ages, and if I have not laid more stress upon that period it is because its history is still enveloped in the mists of legends. Book The Belgian Nation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Belgian Nation Classic Reprint written by De Vos and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Belgian Nation Dear Father De Vos: Your pamphlet "The Belgian Nation" strikes me as reflecting the life of the Belgians through the centuries and the remarkable part they had in all the great movements of the times. Why have the Belgians played such an important role in history? Why have they prospered? We find the answer in your pamphlet. The historical episodes set forth in its pages give the reader a clear conception of the Belgian nation from the times of Caesar until the present epoch. "Multum in parvo." The ingenious arrangement in episodes, chronicles and statistics offers much in a small booklet and gives enough to understand the history of the Belgians and their influence in the world. It is just what the busy Americans want as it shows in a few hours the reason why Belgium lives and is the center of attention of the world today. To my knowledge, there are in the United States very few histories of Belgium. I commend these compact pages to the numerous friends of Belgium. Book A Short History of Belgium Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of Belgium Classic Reprint written by Leon Van Der Essen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Belgium The national culture Of Belgium is a synthesis, if I may so call it, where one finds the genius of two races - the Romance and the Germanic - mingled, yet modified by the imprint of the distinctively Belgian. It is in that very receptivity - the fact that it has absorbed and unified the best elements of Latin and Teutonic civilization - that the originality of the Belgian national culture resides. Book The Past and the Future of Belgium Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Past and the Future of Belgium Classic Reprint written by Albert J. Carnoy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Past and the Future of Belgium Belgium has been placed in special prominence by her situation at the center of the greatest fight in history and by her noble attitude during a long period of indescribable sufferings. Many a name of her cities and villages has been associated for ever with deeds of glory or shame. Many a name of her sons has been added to the list of heroes who have suffered for ideals dear to mankind. The German intrigues as well as the discussions at the Peace Conference have acquainted the whole world with special aspects of Belgian nationality and Belgian politics. But all this has been very fragmentary information, and numerous are the persons in America who have the most friendly interest for Belgium but know very little of that country, her aspects, her inhabitants, the essential facts of her history, the main features of her national character. Particulars as to the amount of destruction wrought by the Germans and about the part played by Belgium in the war are also very desirable; but above all, in connection with the restoration of the country and with its future, it will be helpful to provide reliable and clear information to all those who may come in contact with a nation that has now indelible bonds of friendship with the United States. Both countries will remain associated during the period of re construction and it is desirable that they know one another. This is the idea which has inspired the present booklet which in a condensed form treats of Belgium, her glorious past, her ideals, her part in the war, her problems in the near future, her possibilities, her place in the new world. They have seen a nation where they had supposed that there was only a geographical expression. They have seen martial courage where they had forgotten that it had been famous for centuries. They have been surprised to find in this little land so much chivalrous honour and so much civic patriotism. They need to be reminded that its nobility headed the Crusades and that its common people established the first free city life north of the Alps. Book Belgium and the Belgians Classic Reprint

Download or read book Belgium and the Belgians Classic Reprint written by Cyril Scudamore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium and the Belgians The object of the present work is not that of a guide-book, but rather to convey that information respecting Belgium and its people which we look for in vain in the excellent topographical works of Baedeker, Murray, Grant Allen, Ward & Lock, Lindley, and Jean d'Ardenne. In the chapter on "The Holiday Ground of Belgium" the writer has endeavoured to describe faithfully a tour made by him in the summer of 1899 through the Liege district and the Ardennes. He does not profess to have discovered anything new or strange; but as he has carefully avoided describing any place which he has not recently visited, he believes that his narrative may possibly be of use to those who may wish to undertake a similar excursion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium Past and Present: The Cockpit of Europe This book does not pretend to being a formal history of the Flemish and Walloon provinces up to their union as an independent kingdom; nor does it deal with Belgium exclusively. Its aim is, with pen and pencil, to illustrate the stirring past of that troubled borderland on which neighbour-nations have so often fought their quarrels, till in our own day it made an arena for the main stress of the greatest war ever waged on earth. Those who have gone through that titanic struggle, or followed it with anxious eyes, may willingly find here renewed for them the old fame of names now to us become at once sadly and proudly familiar. Book Belgium and the Scrap of Paper Classic Reprint

Download or read book Belgium and the Scrap of Paper Classic Reprint written by Henry Noel Brailsford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium and "the Scrap of Paper" There are two ways of regarding such a crime as the German invasion of Belgium. The natural impulse of every normal man, as he realised, first that a treaty had been broken, and then that an unprovoked invasion had been aggravated by more than the common ruthlessness of war, was one of honest anger. There was every justification for that anger. It is an axiom of the law of nations, older by far than the Hague Convention, that the territory of neutrals is inviolable, and in this case Belgium was no ordinary neutral. Perpetual neutrality had been imposed upon her by the Powers, and Prussia signed the treaty which established it. Belgium was the vestal virgin of Europe. Her security was a claim on the honour of her neighbours, and the Power which threatens it, is guilty of something worse. Than an attack on Bel gium. It has weakened the fabric of faith and honesty among peoples, substituted force for law in their intercourse, and delayed the march of civilisation. These are abstract words; it is. A heavier count against Germany that she has rendered hundreds of thousands of Belgians homeless, and made widows and orphans among a people which had done her no wrong.
