Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Germany and Belgium Before and During the War It is to the German Empire alone that the creation and the untiring realisation of this situation must be attributed. The Empire has thus perpetrated an abominable crime against humanity and its responsibility is written indelibly in the pages of history. War broke out. Vienna broke the peace by declaring war against Serbia, a cowardly act of aggression which involved the risk of a conflict with Russia. Nevertheless it was not from Vienna nor from St. Petersburg, but from Berlin that the first declaration of war between Great Powers issued! Book The Belgian People s War

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Belgian People's War: A Violation of International Law In laying an English translation of the German White-Book on the franctireur war in Belgium before the public it should be pointed out - as may also be seen from the numbering of the annexes - that the English version is not a complete rendering of the German original. Of the annexes, which contain over two hundred and twenty affidavits and reports, only about one-third have been included, so as to save the reader a wearisome repetition of numerous similar incidents and to give him, with less labor to himself, an approximate idea of the kind of actions indulged in by the Belgian civilian population. The German original is open for inspection at the Imperial German Embassy and the Imperial German Consulates in this country. Download or read book Belgium in War Time Classic Reprint written by De Gerlache De Gomery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium in War Time Considered from the standpoint of its area merely, Belgium is a very small country. Her surface measures, indeed, only square miles, or rather less than one-eighteenth of Germany or France, her two powerful neighbours to the east and the south. Belgium is smaller than Denmark; smaller even than Holland, her northern sister. To cross the country by rail along its great est diameter, from Arlon to Ostend, that is, from the south-east to the north-west, requires only four or five hours. Yet the soil of this little country presents a most remarkable variety of aspects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of the War The Belgians had not only been subjected to fire and sword, as in the ancient days Of savagery, but they were in danger Of starvation from the stoppage of industry and absorption Of food supplies by the invaders. Measures Of relief, largely financed at first by Great Britain and later by the United States, were organized under the direction Of an American engineer, Herbert C. Hoover. For the next four years the people Of Belgium and Northern France lived mainly on supplies distributed first under American and later under Spanish direction, suffering indescribable horrors to the very last. Their wrecked cities were still in the condition to which the Germans had reduced them in 1914, or worse, when the country was recovered in 1918. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Belgium: Neutral and Loyal; The War of 1914 In the universal turmoil of the present moment public opinion is slow in forming; it is fostered mainly by impressions. Perhaps the moment has come to lay facts before it. To clear up every doubt and furnish the material for a considered judgment, it will not be superfluous to meet every accusation, even those whose mere recital violates common sense, and to. Bestow upon them more atten tion than might at first sight be considered appropriate. Belgium has nothing with which to reproach herself; it is due to her that this should be proved by evidence; that no piece of testimony should be omitted and that every mistake and every slander should be exposed firmly but dispassionately. Other nations besides my own have an equal interest in this. To represent Belgium as having failed to keep her promises strikes a blow at the cause of little nations and at the theory of perpetual neutrality. The history of the future will without doubt be that of the free development of nations, jealous of their independence and impatient to escape from the play of intrigue and the hegemony of foreign influence. The nations which have grown great under the shelter of the sanction of law, as well as those who may perhaps dream of attaining that benefit in the future, ought to have full knowledge of the lessons of the experience of Belgium. These lines are dated from Switzerland. In this country, which bears so strong a resemblance to my own, I have found not only the moral support of sympathy but also that moderate and critical attitude of mind which is necessary for one who undertakes a work in which so much restraint is necessarily placed upon the feelings of the writer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Iron Bars: Two Years of German Occupation in Belgium The English-speaking public is generally well informed concerning the part played in the war by the Belgian troops. The resistance of our small field army at Liege, before Antwerp, and on the Yser has been praised and is still being praised wherever the tale runs. This is easy enough to understand. The fact that those men should have been able to hold so long in check the forces of the first military Empire in Europe, and that a great number of them, helped by new contingents of recruits and led by their young King, should still be fighting on their native soil, must appeal strongly to the imagination. The towering Babels that we raised Where scoffing sophists brawl, The little Antichrists we praised - The night is on them all. The fool hath said ... The fool hath said.
