Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories by Foreign Authors: Polish, Greek, Belgian, Hungarian The only guide at that time for the numerous vessels is the light-house. The task of finding a new keeper fell to the United States consul living in Panama, and this task was no small one first, because it was ab solutely necessary to find the man within twelve hours; second, the man must be unusually con scientious, - it was not possible, of course, to take the first comer at random; finally, there was an utter lack of candidates. Life on a tower is uncommonly difficult, and by no means enticing to people of the South, who love idleness and the freedom of a vagrant life. That light-house keeper is almost aprisoner. He cannot leave his rocky island except on Sundays. A boat from Aspinwall brings him provisions and water once a day, and returns immediately; on the whole island, one acre in area, there is no ih habitant. The keeper lives in the light-house; he keeps it in order. During the day he gives signals by displaying flags of various colors to indicate changes of the barometer; in the even ing he lights the lantern. This would be no great labor were it not that to reach the lantern at the summit of the tower he must pass over more than four hundred steep and very high steps; sometimes he must make this journey re peatedly during the day. In general, it is the life of a monk, and indeed more than that, - the life of a hermit. It was not wonderful, therefore. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glory of Belgium The wonderful Gothic churches and civic buildings that were to be seen before the present war. Although I have everywhere spoken of these monuments Of Old Flanders as still extant, unhappily in some cases the past tense will have to be substituted for the present. What remains unimpaired by the hand of time to-day may suffer destruction from the ruthless hands Of the invading foe to-morrow. War always leaves its mark on a country, for, while time heals many Of its wounds, the scars that it inflicts on Old churches and Other ancient buildings never can be healed. Egypt, Greece, Italy, Gaul - what storied country is there that has not felt the devastating breath Of war P Reformers, Roundheads, Industrial Revolutionaries have between them wrought havoc on the antique towers and veteran battlements of Britain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Greece After half a century of existence, the New Greece created by England, France, and Russia, reckoning up her achievements and acquisitions, can find little further cause for gratitude to her earlier patrons. She may boast of a considerable development, political as well as material; but, save the annexation of the Ionian Islands, she has received no extension, and no great encouragement, from any of the European Powers. She has been left very much to her own devices; but she has been speedily snubbed whenever these devices tended towards the completion of the work of 1830. A few facts as to the results of recent explorations at Olympia and Mycenae have been gleaned from the new edition, prepared by Mr. Tozer, of Bishop Wordsworth's excellent Greece: Pictorial, Descriptive, and Histori cal but the compiler has very seldom consulted this work, because its avowed object is very similar to that he has himself had in view, though his method of treatment will, he ventures to think, he found to be essentially different. The statements of historical fact are based chiefly on Grote, though Thirlwall has also been consulted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rambles and Studies in Greece Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rambles and Studies in Greece This book is distinctly a sentimental journey, omitting much that appeared to the writer ephemeral or commonplace, and delaying in the contemplation of those things which have made Greece Of paramount importance to cul tivated Europe. The lapse of years has made it necessary to omit here and there a name, or even a prophecy which has not been fulfilled, but the main body of the book is as true now as it was a generation ago, and it has been a labour of love to endeavour to make its style more worthy of its fascinating subject. From this point of View there have been many changes made in this new edition oeci'ccl to the public to whom Greece is now accessible in an ordinary holiday time. But even to those that stay at home, it will serve as a carefully verified report of the scenery of a country which occupies so large a place in their education. The pictures of buildings and statues in the former editions have been omitted, because there is now ample facility for acquiring photographs of all the striking things here described. The main desire of the author has been not only to make the book better, but also cheaper and more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Greece, Vol. 2 In the same measure in which the Greek settlements had overspread every coast, the mainland of the Greeks had continued to narrow and decrease. For the Greek nationality was so essentially based on a particular civilisation, that all the members of the Greek race who took no part in its progress, however near in respect of their habitations, appeared to be excluded from the nationality; whereas the remotest regions in which a fortunate settlement had enabled Greek civilisation to fix its roots belonged in every sense to the Greeks. After this fashion the land of Greece had separated from the body of the mountain-country stretching to the north of the AEgean; in other words, the peninsula-country had separated from the mainland. In Epirus a number of tribes akin to one another first possessed a common sanctuary, in connexion with which they afterwards received a common name (vol. i. p. 104). The sacred oak of Dodona put forth its leaves as late as the age of the Antonines; nay, the oracle of Zeus survived for centuries the end of the history of the Greek people, and, as its primitive sanctuary, always remained an object of veneration.
