Book Being the Best Bearer of Bad Tidings

Download or read book Being the Best Bearer of Bad Tidings written by Katharine M. Sweeny and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Giving bad news is an unpleasant task, and the medical literature provides numerous guidelines for giving bad news well. However, what people mean by "giving bad news well" is less clear. What should be the goal when communicating bad news? I suggest that the goal of news-givers should be to guide recipients toward a desired response. I propose a theoretical framework, the Bad News Response Model, for delivering bad news that draws from research in health and social psychology. The model is applicable to all forms of bad news and specifies that three characteristics of the news (controllability, likelihood, and severity) influence which response (watchful waiting, active change, or acceptance) will most often lead to the best quality of life for the recipient. Our studies examined three questions related to the Bad News Response Model: How does the type of bad news affect response choices? (Studies 1 and 2) How do people feel about responses to bad news? (Study 3) How do people view the effectiveness of responses to bad news? (Study 4) Results suggest that response choices are predictable based on the controllability, likelihood, and severity of news outcomes, as suggested by the model (Studies 1 and 2). In addition, results revealed that people may also make response choices based on the beliefs they have about response options (Study 3) and on the perceived effectiveness of each response (Study 4).

Book The Myths of Happiness

Download or read book The Myths of Happiness written by Sonja Lyubomirsky and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of The How of Happiness reveals how to find opportunity in life’s thorniest moments Focusing on life’s biggest, messiest moments, Sonja Lyubomirsky provides readers with the clear-eyed vision they need to build the healthiest, most satisfying life. Lyubomirsky argues that we have been given false promises—myths that assure us that lifelong happiness will be attained once we hit the culturally confirmed markers of adult success. This black-and-white vision of happiness works to discourage us from recognizing the upside of any negative and limits our potential for personal growth. A corrective course on happiness and a call to regard life’s twists and turns with a more open mind, The Myths of Happiness shares practical lessons that prove we are more adaptable than we think we are. It empowers readers to look beyond their first response, sharing scientific evidence that often it is our mindset—not our circumstances—that matters most.

Book Organizational Behavior

Download or read book Organizational Behavior written by John A. Wagner III and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-11 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the management of organizational behavior's importance should be evident, students often don't take the course that seriously. One common student response is that organizational behavior is nothing more than common sense. The field of organizational behavior is a valuable source of practical insight that managers can use to improve the workings of their own firms and to thrive where others might fail. Other textbook authors have avoided deep coverage and failed to build any sense of challenge. John Wagner and John Hollenbeck avoid these pitfalls and challenge students on many levels. They have made the key connection between theory and practice and understand students can excel when challenged to learn something meaningful. Organizational Behavior is written to motivate exceptional student performance. The content requires the student to think and take seriously organizational behavior and why its importance is one of the keys to securing competitive advantage.
