Book excerpt: What would the Catholic Church look like if an unyielding search for justice and harmony characterized its mission in the world? What if the Church's priorities shifted so that living in solidarity with the laity, especially the poorest among them, became its primary goal? How would Catholicism appear to the world and to other religions if simply living out the Gospels became its primary mode of evangelization? What if Catholic bishops looked to their theologians as venerable "masters", incorporating them into deliberations on theology and pastoral care? How would Catholic authority be transformed if building consensus became a primary means of finding direction? Or if leaders knew, in the final analysis, authority had to be earrned from their people? This would be a new kind of Catholicism. And, as journalist Thomas C. Fox shows us, this Catholicism has already been born and has been coming to life in Asia over the past thirty years. It is a new Catholicism that offers a fresh, new vision of Church, a global vision for the 21st century.

Book The Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences FABC

Download or read book The Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences FABC written by Jonathan Y. Tan and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the theological contributions of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), a transnational body comprising fifteen Asian Catholic bishops' conferences as full members and ten associate members. The book introduces the contemporary context of Asia and represents a complete reworking of the author's approach to the FABC's way of being church and doing theology in Asia. The emphasis of the book is on the postcolonial dimensions of Asia and the challenges and implications of decolonization for shaping a postcolonial Asian church and way of theologizing. The book also addresses the challenges of religious pluralism for the FABC and the FABC's prophetic response--seeking to be a sacrament of unity and harmony amid much strife, violence, and conflict. Finally, the book discusses new challenges and possibilities for the FABC as it looks ahead. Tan explores the challenges and implications of migration, transient migration, online and virtual communities, and insider movements for shaping the future of the FABC's approach to theology.

Book A New Way of Being Church for Mission

Download or read book A New Way of Being Church for Mission written by Thao Nguyen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a historical, theological, and analytical study, this dissertation focuses on the new emerging ecclesiology in the Roman Catholic Church in Asia presented by the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conference (FABC). This new ecclesiology aims to promote a participatory model of church in which dialogue within the church, especially dialogue between the church hierarchy and women, has helped to shape the FABC's vision of a new way of being church for mission. This means that through dialogue with women, the Asian church can engage in dialogue with the Asian religions and with the poor effectively. In this new vision of church, women both play a vital role in sustaining the faith of church members and building an important bridge between the church and the people of other religions. The dissertation argues that Asian women, through their services, participations, and their voices, have significantly influenced the Asian bishops' consciousness of women's concerns and roles. More important, through dialogue with the Asian bishops, women have shaped and continue to shape the FABC's vision of a new way of being church for mission. The dissertation is comprised of five chapters: The first chapter presents a theological foundation of the FABC after Vatican II (1962-1965). This theological foundation helped the Asian church open up for women's fuller participation in the life and mission of the church. The second chapter explores a history of dialogue between the Asian bishops and women from 1974-2012. The third chapter studies the FABC's new ecclesiology in which women became one of the most concerned topic of the FABC's documents. The fourth chapter studies methods and strategies employed by Asian women to negotiate with the church hierarchy. The fifth chapter studies how Asian women enrich the church's self-understanding as well as the church's engagement in dialogue with people of other religions. The concluding chapter shows that there were two recognizable movements within the participatory church: the upward movement from women's efforts when they raise their voices and engage in dialogue with church hierarchy, and the downward movement when the Asian bishops are willing to open themselves to dialogue with women and take their concerns into account.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Christianity in Asia

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Christianity in Asia written by Felix Wilfred and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named by the International Bulletin of Missionary Studies as an Outstanding Book of 2014 for Mission Studies Despite the ongoing global expansion of Christianity, there remains a lack of comprehensive scholarship on its development in Asia. This volume fills the gap by exploring the world of Asian Christianity and its manifold expressions, including worship, theology, spirituality, inter-religious relations, interventions in society, and mission. The contributors, from over twenty countries, deconstruct many of the widespread misconceptions and interpretations of Christianity in Asia. They analyze how the growth of Christian beliefs throughout the continent is linked with the socio-political and cultural processes of colonization, decolonization, modernization, democratization, identity construction of social groups, and various social movements. With a particular focus on inter-religious encounters and emerging theological and spiritual paradigms, the volume provides alternative frames for understanding the phenomenon of conversion and studies how the scriptures of other religious traditions are used in the practice of Christianity within Asia.

Book The Church of the East in Central Asia and China

Download or read book The Church of the East in Central Asia and China written by Brepols Publishers and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of papers on the history of Christianity along the Silk Road and in pre-modern China, pushing back the frontier of knowledge in a fast developing new area of research.00The diffusion of Christianity along the Silk Road from Iraq and Iran to China in the pre-modern era has attracted scholarly attention in the West since the discovery of the famous Xi?an (Nestorian) Monument c. 1623. This initial discovery was dismissed as a?Jesuit forgery? by Voltaire, Edward Gibbon and many other scholars of the Enlightenment. However, its authenticity has been more than vindicated by the discovery of genuine (Nestorian / Jingjiao) Christian texts in Chinese from Dunhuang and in Syriac, Sogdian and Old Turkish from Turfan (Bulayïq) at the beginning of the last century. The discovery of a second major inscription which included part of a Chinese Christian (Jingjiao) text already known to scholars from Dunhuang, and the recent re-discovery of several Dunhuang Christian texts in a Japanese library, has removed any lingering doubts about the authenticity of the texts recovered from Dunhuang. The surviving material spans almost a millennium from the introduction of Christianity along the Silk Road in the sixth and seventh centuries through the Mongol period and beyond.
