Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Being Another Way, Dustin Klinger recounts the history of how medieval Arabic philosophers in the Islamic East grappled with the logical role of the copula “to be,” an ambiguity that has bedeviled Western philosophy from Parmenides to the analytic philosophers of today. Working from within a language that has no copula, a group of increasingly independent Arabic philosophers began to critically investigate the semantic role that Aristotle, for many centuries their philosophical authority, invested in the copula as the basis of his logic. Drawing on extensive manuscript research, Klinger breaks through the thicket of unstudied philosophical works to demonstrate the creativity of postclassical Islamic scholarship as it explored the consequences of its intellectual break with the past. Against the still widespread view that intellectual ferment all but disappeared during the period, he shows how these intellectuals over the centuries developed and refined a sophisticated philosophy of language that speaks to core concerns of contemporary linguistics and philosophy.

Download or read book Another Way written by Jeremy Garber and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can theologians, philosophers, and ordinary people think about the Holy Spirit in the twenty-first century? This volume offers one model: the pneumatology of minoritarian communal interpretation, the alternative creation of meaning within an oppressive majority context. Garber looks at the stories of Saul, Ezekiel, and Jesus in the Gospels; the Radical Reformers of the sixteenth century; and a contemporary group of “spiritual but not religious” artists to see how they understand the Spirit working in their lives. He weaves together the theories of John Howard Yoder, Deleuze and Guattari, and media theorists like Stanley Fish, Jeremy Stolow, and Thomas Lindlof as a theological and philosophical background to those stories. In the end, the Holy Spirit is “being weird like Jesus together”—and Garber offers some observations on what that might look like, throughout history and today.

This is a national outreach to those who still suffer from abuse together we stand divided we fall. This is a true story of abuse awareness for victims to receive help in sexual, mental, and physical abuse. The story of triumph over abuse, alcoholism, and trauma are episodes about my life. I wrote this book through the eyes of an innocent young child being abused. The promises start to happen when the victim surrenders to the will of God nothing else worked. This material will help people build a foundation of willingness to conquer abuse through the powerful medicine of Gods forgiveness. The road to freedom for the victims of abuse expressed in this work starts with assimilating the trauma, and identifying the problem. This book allows people to see the power of God working in children so powerful that at a young age. I was able to hide the trauma better than being a grown up trying to survive. I just want people to know that they are not alone in their suffering and trauma. We can survive together even though I may not know who they are this message is for those who still suffer.

  • Author : Kevin Brown
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-02-06
  • ISBN : 1610978641
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Another Way written by Kevin Brown and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-02-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many young Christians, Kevin Brown had what he believed to be a strong faith, one that provided answers to all the questions he had and might encounter. He even attended a Christian college and considered becoming a youth minister. While there, though, he began having doubts about his faith, began asking questions that came from discussions both in and out of the classroom--questions he couldn't find answers to. When the church told him he shouldn't be asking those questions, he left the church and his faith behind. He kept asking questions, though, and kept looking for a faith that would allow him to have questions and doubts, yet still believe. What he found may offer an answer to the religious divide in our society--one that separates evangelical from progressive Christians, one that separates sacred from secular. In this memoir, Brown describes his spiritual journey from his first faith to the loss of faith to the way he found back to a Christianity where he can ask those questions, a different way than he knew before. He still has questions and doubts, but he also has faith, in spite of and because of those questions and doubts.

Book Another Way of Telling

Download or read book Another Way of Telling written by John Berger and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-07-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There are no photographs which can be denied. All photographs have the status of fact. What is to be examined is in what way photography can and cannot give meaning to facts." With these words, two of our most thoughtful and eloquent interrogators of the visual offer a singular meditation on the ambiguities of what is seemingly our straightforward art form. As constructed by John Berger and the renowned Swiss photographer Jean Mohr, that theory includes images as well as words; not only analysis, but anecdote and memoir. Another Way of Telling explores the tension between the photographer and the photographed, between the picture and its viewers, between the filmed moment and the memories that it so resembles. Combining the moral vision of the critic and the pratical engagement of the photgrapher, Berger and Mohr have produced a work that expands the frontiers of criticism first charged by Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, and Susan Sontag.

Book Another Way of Seeing

Download or read book Another Way of Seeing written by Peter Gabel and published by Quid Pro Books. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ANOTHER WAY OF SEEING, Peter Gabel argues that our most fundamental spiritual need as human beings is the desire for authentic mutual recognition. Because we live in a world in which this desire is systematically denied due to the legacy of fear of the other that has been passed on from generation to generation, we exist as what he calls "withdrawn selves," perceiving the other as a threat rather than as the source of our completion as social beings. Calling for a new kind of "spiritual activism" that speaks to this universal interpersonal longing, Gabel shows how we can transform law, politics, public policy, and culture so as to build a new social movement through which we become more fully present to each other--creating a new "parallel universe" existing alongside our socially separated world and reaffirming the social bond that inherently unites us. "Peter Gabel is one of the grand prophetic voices in our day. He also is a long-distance runner in the struggle for justice. Don't miss this book!" --Cornel West, The Class of 1943 Professor, Princeton University, and Professor of Philosophy and Christian Practice, Union Theological Seminary "Replete with wise insights that reward readers with Another Way of Seeing toward their pursuit of compassion, community, and a better world, law professor, activist and philosopher Peter Gabel's excellent essay collection elaborates upon the meaning of Martin Luther King Jr.'s expression 'Justice is love correcting that which revolts against love.' No matter what your expertise, Gabel's thoughts are pertinent to fulfillment of your human possibilities." --Ralph Nader, Washington, DC

Book Another Way of Seeing

Download or read book Another Way of Seeing written by Louise A. Poresky and published by . This book was released on 2005-06 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Course in Miracles contains a program of study whose completion promises inner peace. Its curriculum is designed to rid us of fear and return us to love. Its three volumes amount to a massive 1200 plus pages of theory and practice. Students of the Course find the Text, the volume in which the Course's philosophy is laid out across a vast and tortuous terrain of theory, particularly difficult to navigate. Another Way of Seeing guides you across that terrain by identifying the basic tenets of the Course. Devoting each chapter to one basic teaching, Another Way of Seeing explains the Course in clear and simple terms. It then does what no other book on the Course has done so far--it illustrates the Course at work. Each chapter concludes with a discussion of a piece of classical literature that shows the principles of the Course put into practice. Dr. Poresky, a literary scholar and professor, brings her appreciation and knowledge of A Course in Miracles together with her conviction that literature teaches us about ourselves and our relationships with others, and by combining the two, she shows you another way of seeing.
