Book excerpt: "In 2002, the Human Sciences Research Council was commissioned by the WK Kellogg Foundation to develop and implement a five-year intervention project focusing on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in southern Africa. In collaboration with several partner organisations, the project currently focuses on how children, families and communities in Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe are coping with the impact of HIV/AIDS. The aim of the project is to develop models of best practise so as to enhance and improve support structures for OVC in the southern African region as a whole.This report forms part of a series that examines the work undertaken as part of the Kellogg OVC Intervention Project from 2002 to 2005.The main goal of this particular study was to identify priorities or gaps for HIV/AIDS awareness, advocacy and policy-support intervention programmes that would be developed and implemented in Klerksdorp, South Africa to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly among Orphaned and Vulnerable Children."Publisher description

Arguing that providing this service is the responsibility of the South African government, the policy analysis unit of the Human Sciences Research Council hosted this colloquium in order to facilitate debate on the subject, initiating policy dialogue and formulating ideas for those involved in health-policy development. Divided into three sections, this overview provides a discussion of the context for policy debates on health as well as a concise summary of four key themes: the reform path since 1994, critical options for health within the context of a comprehensive system of social security, local and international evidence on health-system models, and health-systems reform and stakeholder engagement. Recommendations for improving implementation and taking the process of policy development forward are also included.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes information received from 106 malaria-endemic countries and from malaria control partners. It highlights continued progress made towards meeting international targets for malaria control to be achieved by 2010 and by 2015. International funds disbursed for malaria control increased from $200 million in 2004 to $1.5 billion in 2009. Since 2008, more than 289 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets have been delivered to sub-Saharan Africa, enough to protect three quarters of the 765 million persons at risk of the disease. Over the last decade, 11 countries in the Africa Region and 32 countries in other regions showed reductions of 50% or greater in either confirmed malaria cases or malaria admissions and deaths. Malaria control is making a major contribution to reducing mortality in children less than 5 years old and to attaining the health-related Millennium Development Goals.

Defined in this book as 'settlements of the urban poor developed through the unauthorised occupation of land', they are regarded by many as unhealthy and overcrowded blights on the urban landscape 'squatter camps' in common parlance. Yet census data tell us that 16.4% of households across the country live in informal settlements, mostly in urban areas where an insecure foothold on the land enables these households to access the economic opportunities, social and economic networks and basic amenities that are essential to their survival.
