Dr. Robert Jaeger and many of his graduate students spent over 50 years studying this species in New York and Virginia, using ecological techniques in forests and behavioral experiments in laboratory chambers in an attempt to understand how this species interacts with other species in the forest and the components of its intra- and intersexual social behaviors. The competitive and social behaviors of this species are unusually complex for an amphibian. This species is highly aggressive towards other similar-size species where they cohabit in forests, often leading to very little geographic overlap between the species. The authors examine the fascinating behavioral traits of this species including social monogamy, mutual mate guarding, sexual coercion, inter-species communication, and conflict resolution.

One major consequence of habitat alteration is its effect on the movement behavior of individuals. Spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) are forest-dependent, pond-breeding amphibians. I used a combination of empirical studies of juvenile spotted salamander movement and individual-based modeling to investigate the influence of habitat amount and arrangement on juvenile salamander survival. Salamanders moved straighter and with fewer turns through field habitat compared to both forest and early successional habitat. Movement in forest was well approximated by a correlated random walk. Salamanders oriented movement toward forest when released at most 10 m from the forest edge. Different movement strategies were optimal under different habitat modification scenarios. The strength of movement bias toward habitat had a significant effect on the probability of individuals locating habitat. The degree to which movement bias affected the probability of locating habitat differed based on assumptions of habitat clumping and density-dependent mortality. My results indicated that the amount and configuration of habitat surrounding wetlands affect optimal movement behavior, and habitat managers should consider the configuration of habitat surrounding wetlands when designing conservation measures.

Book excerpt: The fine-scale genetic structure of populations is traditionally thought to be shaped primarily by geographic barriers to reproduction among local populations. However, other mechanisms of isolation have been recognized, but little has been done to determine their relative roles in shaping genetic variation in natural populations. In this study, I test whether genetic structure within and among breeding ponds of spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) is influenced by within-pond variation in breeding time. I found significant genetic structure attributable to variation in breeding time within ponds. This temporal structure was not consistent across ponds, indicating it is a local and not a regional effect. However, this temporal structure did not fully resolve strong patterns of inbreeding within ponds, indicating that reproductive barriers operating with in ponds are more effective than either spatial or phenological ones. Together, these findings reveal complex relationships between genetic structure and variation in breeding phenology that would not be uncovered by spatial or temporal analyses alone.

Book excerpt: The initial juvenile movement phase represents the first stage of the multi-phase process of natal dispersal. My objective was to investigate how alterations in forest habitat quality impact initial juvenile movement success and behavior. I conducted a mark-recapture study of juvenile Spotted Salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) and Green Frogs (Lithobates clamitans) within experimental forest arrays. Spotted Salamander movement success was significantly greater in partial-cut treatments than the control or clearcut treatments. Green Frog movement success was greatest in the control forest. A greater proportion of both Spotted Salamander and Green Frog juveniles, initially moving through open-canopy habitats, redirected their movements toward forests. I next sought to identify how fine-scale habitat quality affects juveniles' decisions to cease moving away from their natal pond and settle. By using experimental enclosures, I attempted to isolate the effects of forest canopy and microhabitat manipulations on salamander settling decisions relative to unmanipulated forest controls. For Spotted Salamanders and Ringed Salamanders (A. annulatum) settling probability decreased with forest canopy removal and compacted soils. Spotted salamander settling probability increased with higher refuge densities.

Changes in size structure influence intraguild interactions by affecting the strength and direction of these species’ interactions. I tested for size-structured intraguild interactions in temporary pond ecosystems between marbled salamanders (Ambystoma opacum) and tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) using an outdoor mesocosm experiment. I hypothesized that 1) A. opacum survivorship and growth would be negatively impacted when both species start at a similar size because tiger salamanders grow faster and are more aggressive 2) A. tigrinum will grow slower and have lower survivorship when they occur with large A. opacum because A. opacum will outcompete A. tigrinum and prey upon them. There was no support for the second hypothesis, A. tigrinum grew and survived the same regardless of A. opacum size. However, I found support for the first hypothesis. Small A. opacum mortality was greatest when they occurred with small A. tigrinum suggesting changes in size structure resulting in these two species occurring together at similar sizes will negatively impact A. opacum populations through intraguild predation. Climate change will likely affect the distribution and abundance of species in temporary pond ecosystems and influence size-structured interactions that impact population and community structure.
