Book Behavior of Pipe Piles in Sand

Download or read book Behavior of Pipe Piles in Sand written by Magued Iskander and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major difficulties in predicting the capacity of pipe piles in sand has resulted from a lack of understanding of the physical processes that control the behavior of piles during installation and loading. This monograph presents a detailed blue print for developing experimental facilities necessary to identify these processes. These facilities include a unique instrumented double-walled pipe-pile that is used to delineate the frictional stresses acting against the external and internal surfaces of the pile. The pile is fitted with miniature pore-pressure transducers to monitor the generation of pore water pressure during installation and loading. A fast automatic laboratory pile hammer capable of representing the phenomena that occur during pile driving was also developed and used.

Book Effect of Pile Installation Method on Pipe Pile Behavior in Sands

Download or read book Effect of Pile Installation Method on Pipe Pile Behavior in Sands written by K. Paik and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open-ended pipe piles are often used for the foundations of both land and offshore structures because of their relatively low driving resistance. In this study, calibration chamber tests were conducted on model pipe piles installed in sands with different soil conditions in order to investigate the effects of the pile installation method on penetration parameters and bearing capacity. Results of the test program showed that both the hammer blow count necessary to install the piles and the incremental filling ratio (IFR), which is used to indicate the degree of soil plugging in open-ended piles, decreased (1) with increasing hammer weight for the same driving energy, and (2) with increasing hammer weight at the same fall height. The base and shaft load capacities of the piles were observed to increase (1) with increasing hammer weight for the same driving energy, and (2) with increasing hammer weight for the same fall height. It was also observed that the noise level observed during pile driving decreases (1) as the driving energy decreases and (2) as the hammer weight increases for the same driving energy. Model jacked piles were also installed and tested. The jacked piles were found to have higher bearing capacities than identical driven piles under similar conditions, mostly due to the more effective development of soil plugging in jacking than in driving.

Book Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour

Download or read book Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour written by D.A. Ardus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two main areas of offshore activity are addressed in this book: Site investigation on assessment; and Applications and foundation engineering. The 37 contributions from a wide ranging group of international experts, are resulting from the Offshore Site Investigation and Foundation Behaviour Conference, London, U.K., September 1992. Adequate determination of site conditions can only be achieved by the integrated approach of using geological, geophysical and geotechnical data. Developments in data acquisition techniques are illustrated through case histories in the section on Geotechnical Sampling and Testing. In the section on Advanced Interpretation Techniques and Integrated Interpretations the state of the art of these topics is also illustrated by case histories. A review of foundation behaviour is presented in the section on Gravity Foundations, Foundation Performance Monitoring, Piling Research and Design Criteria. These topics are illustrated in the light of field experience and recent research, in particular that involving full-scale tests and monitoring. This book provides many illustrative figures and much pertinent information to exploration and marine geophysicists, petroleum and offshore engineers and for researchers working these fields.

Book From Soil Behavior Fundamentals to Innovations in Geotechnical Engineering

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Soil Behavior Fundamentals to Innovations in Geotechnical Engineering GSP 233 honors the technical contribution of Roy Olson Ph.D. P.E. NAE Distinguished Member ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains a total of 51 papers 21 authored or co-authored by Prof. Olson along with 30 peer-reviewed contemporary invited or submitted papers. Olson's early work dealt with clay behavior consolidation analyses and compaction of unsaturated soils. His later work focused on applications of soil behavior in foundation and forensic engineering including axial capacity of piles in sand and clay pull out capacity of suction caisson foundations and failures of excavations and bulkhead structures. Contemporary innovations discussed in papers contributed to this volume include developments in consolidation analyses modeling of shear strength measurements of permeability and interpretation of in-situ tests.Lessons learned from failures along with recent developments in foundation engineering such as characterization of energy piles calculation of settlement from dynamic soil properties developments in finite element modeling of foundations mechanism of failure of jacked piles mitigation of piling noise and field load tests on a variety of foundations are also included. From Soil Behavior Fundamentals to Innovations in Geotechnical Engineering contains practical and technical information on soil behavior fundamentals and current applications in geotechnical engineering that will be of interest to educators researchers and practicing geotechnical engineers.

Book Plugging of Closed and Open ended Pipe Piles in Sands

Download or read book Plugging of Closed and Open ended Pipe Piles in Sands written by Wissam Hadi Shijhait and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plugging of pipe piles is an important phenomenon, which is not adequately accounted for in the current design recommendations of open ended pipe piles. An open-ended pipe pile is said to be plugged when the soil inside the pile moves down with the pile, resulting in the pile becoming effectively closed-ended. Plugging is believed to result in an increase in horizontal stresses between the pile and the surrounding soil, which results in an increase in skin friction. The present study investigates the effect of plug on pile load capacity and effect of plug removal. Different parameters are considered such as pile diameter to length ratio, type of installation in sand of different densities, removal of plug in three stages (50%, 75% and 100%) with respect to length of plug. Kerbala sand, which is used as a foundation soil is poorly graded clean sand. The sand was prepared at different densities using a raining technique. To simulate the pile load test in the field, a new apparatus was manufactured. A driving-pressing system for pile installation was manufactured in this study. The soil plug is removed by a device manufactured to remove the soil column entrapped inside the pipe piles
