Book excerpt: Bed bugs are thriving across the globe--from North and South America, to Africa, Asia and Europe. For some time, bed bugs were naively seen as a problem unique to developing countries, but their love of high thread content sheets has set them up in five-star residences in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe as well. Bed Bugs were first noticed in society by Americans in the early 1700 s. Many believe sailboats returning from Europe unknowingly carried the bugs as cargo, as sailors complained of being attacked as they slept in their cabins. With the introduction of DDT in the 1950s, bed bugs nearly disappeared. But when DDT was banned in the 1970 s, a wave of super bed bugs rejoiced. Now, up to 25% of residents in some cities have reported problems with the pests, bordering on epidemic levels. In fact, history has never seen such widespread and intense bed bug infestations. Our propensity for travel has left bed bugs with enviable frequent flyer status too. Following the Sydney Olympics, for example, and the thousands of visitors to Australia, it was estimated that the bed bug occupancy rate in Sydney hotels was 95%. In "Sleep Tight, "Brooke Borel introduces readers to the biology of these amazingly adaptive insects which can travel over 100 foot distances at night--and the myriad ways in which humans respond to them. She travels to meet with scientists who are rearing bed bug colonies on their own blood-- to the BedBug University, to swank apartments on the upper East Side of Manhattan. She explores the history of bed bugs, and their near extinction, charting how current infestations are in direct response to human chemical use. She also introduces us to the economics of bed bug infestations, and the industry that has arisen to combat that. This is the first history and natural history of bed bugs, and it leaves few exoskeletons unturned."

Book The Bedbugs Night Dance and Other Hopi Tales of Sexual Encounter

Download or read book The Bedbugs Night Dance and Other Hopi Tales of Sexual Encounter written by Michael Lomatuway'ma and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysteries and complexities of sex-the wonder of sexual initiation, the discomfort of sexual desire, the penalties of indulgence, and the power of erotic love-have all found expression in Hopi tales. Sometimes cast in animal fables, sometimes presented in monstrous exaggeration to emphasize the power of sexual appetite, and sometimes as wildly bawdy as Shakespeare, the tales evoke the candor of Hopi imagination and the vitality of Hopi culture. This volume gives each tale in the original Hopi and in English translation on facing pages. The tales include Bedbug Boy and his constantly interrupted dinner, how the Hehey'as tricked the Itsivus and took advantage of their wives, and how the Horned Lizard girls found a new use for chili powder. Ekkehart Malotki's preface and glossary clarify terms and concepts and provide background for the stories and the storytelling. E. N. Genovese's introduction puts the collection in the broad context of classical Greek and Latin literature and describes how the Hopi stories are distinct in their own right. Michael Lomatuway'ma, Lorena Lomatuway'ma, Sidney Namingha Jr., Leslie Koyawena, and Herschel Talashoma, all gifted Hopi storytellers, have contributed to this collection. Ekkehart Malotki is a professor of languages at the University of Northern Arizona. He has compiled and translated many other books about Hopi language and culture, including Hopi Coyote Tales, available as a Bison Book, and Hopi Ruin Legends. E. N. Genovese is a professor and chair of the Classics and Humanities Department at San Diego State University. His articles have appeared in Classical Journal, MAIA, and Latomus.

Book Bed Bugs Safe Do It Yourself Treatment Methods and Options for Homeowners

Download or read book Bed Bugs Safe Do It Yourself Treatment Methods and Options for Homeowners written by Denise Donovan and published by . This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written and is intended to assist anyone undertaking the challenge of dealing with a bed bug situation and prefer to self-treat. These treatment options and methods were compiled in collaboration with members of the IBBRA who are leading bed bug pest management professionals. The greatest concern with do-it-yourself bed bug control is brought on by the mis-use of chemical pesticides used by the general public which are at best moderately effective at controlling these pests. This books teaches you what to do and most importantly what not to do. Dealing with bed bugs is a momentous challenge for most people because of their flattened bodies and amazing ability to migrate into cracks and crevices where they can't be found. Sometimes months pass where a family is trying to figure out what it is that is biting them because they don't know the signs of bed bugs. On average, we receive from 5 to 10 calls daily at all hours of the day and night from people desperately searching and begging for a solution to something that is biting them. The need for bed bug education and solutions is evident in every call received. Unfortunately, most of these calls are from people who are on limited incomes and just can't possibly afford the services of a pest management professional. The International Bed Bug Resource Authority (IBBRA) has established an industry first "Three Step Program" for anyone from consumer to business owner to follow to properly solve their bed bug issue. The three steps will allow them to "Educate" themselves about bed bugs, their behaviors and to learn about companies and or products that can assist them. Secondly, they will be able to "Evaluate" their overall situation and not have to combat bed bugs blindly or without the proper tools. Lastly, this will enable them to "Initiate" a plan of action steps to utilize the best possible resources to solve their problem and set a preventative protocol in place for future possibilities of infestation. Obviously, learning how you are at risk of bed bugs before you bring them home or finding them in the earliest stage of introduction is the best scenario but unfortunately this is not always the case. The homeowner has different challenges that depend on the severity of the infestation. The variables are how long the infestation has been going on and how it has spread to other parts of the home. I encourage those contemplating do-it-yourself treatment methods to read through this book in its entirety before making the decision to take on this job. And I cannot stress the importance of knowing about re-introduction possibilities. You need to know all the risk factors so you can develop a pro-active alert with all members of your family.
