Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Plural combines a warm appreciation of the Sudanese people with an astute sense of the circumstances under which they live. The author documents in candid portraits the Sudanese at grass roots level, and records their hopes and fears as Sudan formally breaks into two separate states. "In July 2011, Sudan officially 'became plural' as the country split in two; the unofficial north-south divide between the Arab-dominated north and the more ethnically African south was formalized, after the people of Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly to separate from the rest of the country. Richard Boggs lived and worked among the Sudanese for many years, first coming to Sudan as a volunteer in 1986. He has lived in both Juba and Khartoum, and shared the reality of life in Sudan with the people around him. This has enabled him to provide an intimate portrait of the characteristics and values of the Sudanese people. He conveys astutely the particular circumstances in which they live, creating a record of their hopes and fears as Sudan formally breaks into two separate states. Written during a key moment in Sudanese history, as South Sudan gained its independence in July 2011, this unique portrait contains over 100 never-before-published photographs. It brings Sudanese cultures and traditions to a Western audience.

Book Plural Masculinities

Download or read book Plural Masculinities written by Sofia Aboim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plural Masculinities offers a contemporary portrait of the plural dynamics and forms of masculinity, emphasizing the multiple, even contradictory, pathways through which men are remaking their identities. Proceeding from the premise that it is impossible to fully understand masculinity without considering its connection with family change and women's change, it places men and masculinities within the realm of family life, examining men's practices and discourses in their relationships with women and their changing femininities. Combining an empirical study based in Portugal with cross-national analyses of attitudes towards ideal gender arrangements in Europe and the USA, this book examines the various ways in which men come to define their identities and will appeal to those working in the fields of masculinities, gender studies and the sociology of the family.

Book Plural Policing

    Book Details:
  • Author : Trevor Jones
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2006-04-18
  • ISBN : 1134255748
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Plural Policing written by Trevor Jones and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policing is changing rapidly and radically. An increasingly complex array of public, private and municipal bodies - as well as public police forces - are engaged in the provision of regulation and security. Consequently, it is difficult to think of security provision primarily in terms of what the public police do, and so the terminology of 'fragmented' or 'plural' policing systems has become well-established within criminology and police science. 'Plural policing' is now a central issue within criminology and police studies throughout the world, and there is now a large and growing body of research and theory concerned with its extent, nature and governance. To date, however, this work has been dominated by Anglo-American perspectives. This volume takes a detailed comparative look at the development of plural policing, and provides the most up-to-date work of reference for scholars in this field. Edited by two of the world's leading authorities on policing, and including individual contributions from internationally recognised experts in criminology and police studies, this is the first ever volume to focus on ‘plural policing’ internationally, and to draw together empirical evidence on its developments in a formal comparative framework.

Book Theology Psychology and the Plural Self

Download or read book Theology Psychology and the Plural Self written by Léon Turner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the human self singular and unified or essentially plural? This book explores the seemingly disparate ways that Christian theology and the secular human sciences have approached this complex question. The latter have largely embraced the idea of the plural self as an inescapable, even adaptive feature of psychological life. Contemporary Christian theology, by contrast, has largely neglected recent psychological accounts of the naturalness of self-plurality, and has sought to reaffirm the self's unity in opposition to those postmodern theorists who would dismantle it. Through an original analysis of recent theological and secular accounts of self and personhood, this book examines the extent of the intertheoretical disparity and its broader implications for theology's dialogue with the human sciences in general, and psychology in particular. It explains why theologians ought to take questions about the plurality of self very seriously, and how they overlap with many of the central concerns of contemporary theological anthropology, including the notions of relationality, particularity and human sinfulness. Introducing a novel psychological framework to distinguish various understandings of self-disunity, the author argues that contemporary theology's blanket condemnation of self-multiplicity is misconceived, and identifies a possible means of reconciling theological and human scientific accounts.

Book The broken Plural Problem in Arabic and Comparative Semitic

Download or read book The broken Plural Problem in Arabic and Comparative Semitic written by Robert R. Ratcliffe and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The formal aspects of non-concatenative morphology have received considerable attention in recent years, but the diachronic dimensions of such systems have been little explored. The current work applies a modern methodological and theoretical framework to a classic problem in Arabic and Semitic historical linguistics: the highly allomorphic system of 'stem-internal' or 'broken' plurals. It shows that widely-accepted views regarding the historical development of this system are untenable and offers a new hypothesis. The first chapter lays out a methodology for comparative-historical research in morphology. The next two chapters present an analysis of Arabic morphology based on contemporary formal linguistic approaches, and applies this analysis to the noun plural system. Chapter Four shows that neither semantic shift nor ablaut-type sound change account adequately for the data. The fifth chapter offers a systematic comparison of the plural systems of Semitic languages, incorporating much new research on the languages of South Arabia and Ethiopia. Chapter Six proposes a new reconstruction.
