Book excerpt: 'Beckoning - Beyond the Horizon' is a sequel to, but very different from 'Beckoning - Poetry of Life'.Taken together, the two, mainly non-fiction books, cover aspects of life which impact most, if not all of us, at some stage. The first significant difference is the inclusion of a black and white photograph opposite each page of writing/poetry. The author was previously a freelance photographer. Each photograph relates to the title opposite, making for an enhanced reading experience. Additionally, all the photographs were shot in the three northwestern states of Mexico - Chihuahua, Sonora and Baja California. As such, they also provide some sense of that part of the world. The area is nicely 'Beyond the Horizon' of the author's home in Sierra Vista, Arizona. The second major difference is the format. The book is the author's creation of a circle of writing where each item moves gradually on from the previous subject until, on reaching the last, one is connected straight back to the first. A sense of this will be gained by scanning the 'Contents' pages. The objective of both books is to provide very condensed and, hopefully, insightful and positive thought stimulation for anyone exploring their personal philosophy of life. For busy people there could be a huge time saving, compared with researching many of the subjects. Both books are indexed for readily accessing any subject of interest. In that sense, reading may be sequential or as research material by finding the specific subject relevant to life events, at any particular time in life. The launch price is at approximately a 25% discount from the retail price from early June 2020 onwards.

Book Healing the Wounded Heart Workbook

Download or read book Healing the Wounded Heart Workbook written by Dan B. Allender and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, Dan Allender's The Wounded Heart has helped hundreds of thousands of people come to terms with sexual abuse in their past. Now, more than twenty-five years later, Allender has written a brand-new book on the subject that takes into account recent discoveries about the lasting physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual ramifications of sexual abuse. With great compassion Allender offers hope for victims of rape, date rape, incest, molestation, sexting, sexual bullying, unwanted advances, pornography, and more, exposing the raw wounds that are left behind and clearing the path toward wholeness and healing. Never minimizing victims' pain or offering pat spiritual answers that don't truly address the problem, he instead calls evil evil and lights the way to renewed joy. Counselors, pastors, and friends of those who have suffered sexual harm will find in this book the deep spiritual guidance they need to effectively minister to the sexually broken around them. Victims themselves will find here a sympathetic friend to walk alongside them on the road to healing.

Book The General His Daughter

Download or read book The General His Daughter written by Barbara Gavin Fauntleroy and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating personal correspondence from a commanding general of the eighty-second Airborne Division to his young daughter during World War II. James Maurice Gavin left for war in April 1943 as a colonel commanding the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the eighty-second Airborne Division—America’s first airborne division and the first to fight in World War II. In 1944, at age thirty-seven, “Slim Jim” Gavin, as he was known to his troops, became the eighty-second’s commanding general—the youngest Army officer to become a major general since the Civil War. At war’s end, this soldier’s soldier had become one of our greatest generals—and the eighty-second’s most decorated officer. In this book, James Gavin’s letters home to his nine-year-old daughter, Barbara, provide a revealing portrait of the American experience in World War II through the eyes of one of its most dynamic officers. Written from ship decks, foxholes, and field tents—often just before or after a dangerous jump—they capture the day-to-day realities of combat and Gavin’s personal reactions to the war he helped to win. With more than 200 letters spanning from Fort Bragg in 1943 to New York’s victory parade, this collection provides an invaluable self-portrait of a great general, and a great American, in war and peace. Includes a prologue and epilogue by Barbara Gavin Fauntleroy; a foreword by Rufus Broadaway; commentary and notes by Starlyn Jorgensen; and an introduction by Gerard M. Devlin.

Book Going to And With the Dogs

Download or read book Going to And With the Dogs written by David Laursen and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rollicking and often poignant adventures of a family, hell-bent on discovering what lies just over the horizon and willing to walk, ride, paddle, and crawl to get there. From the Outer Banks to the wild Pacific Rim, from the Canadian Rockies to the Gulf of Mexico-few areas of the continent have been spared the footprints, tent stakes, and occasional trespasses of these intrepid travelers. Blizzards, bears, angry moose, and tippy canoes were their lifetime companions, and they stared them all down with the appropriate degree of terror and ineptitude. These adventures take the reader on a journey across country as well as a journey through time. As the miles and years slip by, the travelers were reduced to three-the author and his wife and their loyal dog, Sophie. Now it was time to travel more slowly, to paddle quietly through canoe country and ponder the meaning of life, death and the unknown, destinations still beckoning beyond the horizon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enjoy the ongoing saga of Jason and Kathryn Tarrington. From awakening passion in Beyond All Reason, to a desperate struggle for survival in Beyond All Odds, to the search for a new life beckoning from the unknowable wilderness Beyond the Horizon. Charleston, SC early 1782. Although Lord Cornwallis had surrendered at Yorktown, British troops remained in both Charleston and Savannah. American General Nathanael Greene lingered nearby, refusing to leave until a valid signed peace treaty was presented. Just arrived from England, Kathryn and Jason encounter an atmosphere rife with tension. Although the war may have been declared over, the reality is quite different. To a proud city, still struggling to forget past humiliation suffered under his Lordship, ongoing British presence is a painful reminder; neither have they forgiven Colonel Jason Tarrington and his wife. The Tarringtons must not be recognized, for they have a difficult mission to accomplish: rescue Kathryns nephew, a former rebel militia officer. Held for several months by British contingencies, and as equally well-known as they, his rescue will be extremely dangerous. Once accomplished, they intend to put the war behind them and begin a new life with their family. But neither side will react well to Gabriels rescue or the fact that the notorious Tarringtons still live. For now, Charleston holds only danger. Where can they safely start over? The tentative answer appears to lie in the wilderness Beyond the Horizon. For in the vast, pristine forests of the Carolinas, incredible possibilities exist for the taking. Danger constantly lurks and ones life is often in peril at the hands of devious strangers, former dragoon comrades, even family. An unexpected opportunity will present itself, one that renews old acquaintances and introduces new ones. In this emotional blockbuster there will be shared joys and sorrows as life moves on and an ending you will never forget.

Book Christian Moral Theology in the Emerging Technoculture

Download or read book Christian Moral Theology in the Emerging Technoculture written by Brent Waters and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in an emerging technoculture. Machines and gadgets not only weave the fabric of daily life, but more importantly embody philosophical and religious values which shape the contemporary moral vision-a vision that is often at odds with Christian convictions. This book critically examines those values, and offers a framework for how Christian moral theology should be formed and lived-out within the emerging technoculture. Brent Waters argues that technology represents the principal cultural background against which contemporary Christian moral life is formed. Addressing contemporary ethical and religious issues, this book will be of particular interest to students and scholars exploring the ideas of Heidegger, Nietzsche, Grant, Arendt, and Borgmann.

An enlightening book which explores the ways in which spirituality has been experienced and valued in Western society Traces the development of modern spirituality, from the origins of Romanticism in the eighteenth century, through to the counter-cultural sixties and on to the wellbeing culture of today Explores the belief that modern spirituality is merely an extension of capitalism in which people consume spirituality without giving anything back Contends that much of the wide range of popular mind-body-spirit practices are really an ethically charged force for the ‘good life’, helping us to find balance in the demands of twenty-first century living Written by an acknowledged world-leader working in the field Completes a trilogy of books including The Spiritual Revolution (2005, with Linda Woodhead) and The New Age Movement (1996), charting the rise and influence of spirituality today.
