Book Ghosts of New Orleans

Download or read book Ghosts of New Orleans written by Rosary Hartel O'Neill and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-05-28 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both anthologies are about New Orleans: the past and the present. This author has grown up in this city, and there is a certain timelessness about it - the past definitely influences the present. All the plays are permeated with the sensuousness, decadence and bewilderment of brave and driven people living in chaos, confusion, extreme pleasure and delight. I hope you get a taste of this rich jambalaya of life as you experience these plays. Volume Two contains historical plays, mostly Victorian, with characters driven by stratified society and tradition. Knowledge of New Orleans history made me want to adapt Uncle Vanya. I loved the play but felt its details were too Russian. I took the bones of Vanya and put it on a plantation called Waverly, the last sugarcane plantation in Louisiana, and called my play Uncle Victor. That play won a number of awards and hooked me on historical drama. I also researched Edgar Degas' visit to New Orleans in 1872 and wrote a nine-cast show, so struck was I by all Degas' relatives who had lived with him in 1872. Degas had tried to save his Uncle's failing cotton business and create new roots in the city of his mother. He fell prey to scandal and decadence. I spent days visiting Kate Chopin's house in Cloutierville, La. and interviewed descendents of Chopin's lover Albert Sanpitie and town members about the scandals of her life. I researched in French and English all the books on Degas. I did similar research in New York and Paris for Beckett at Greystones Bay and John Singer Sargent and Madame X, which are loosely tied to New Orleans. We are glad Degas did go back to Paris and paint and didn't succumb to the temptations of New Orleans. We are pleased Sargent refused to change his scorned portrait of Madame X and that Kate Chopin forged a way to raise her six children and still write.

Book excerpt: As playgoers hear the voices in Marilyn Monroe's head and encounter seven visitors to James Dean, they must rethink their relationships with cultural icons. As they ride through a Louisiana swamp in the middle of a hurricane, they must rethink their own lives and losses. O'Neill can somehow enable her audiences to laugh uproariously while re-examining the lies they have been telling themselves. Katherine H. Adams, HUTCHINSON PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH, LOYOLA UNIVERSITY NEW ORLEANS Rosary O'Neill's third volume of plays certainly provides ample evidence of the playwright's versatility and artistic fertility. As our resident dramatist, our 112 year-old institution is so proud we have this gifted artist at this period of world history that has never needed more the power of theatre to confront, alert, and awaken. O. Aldon James PRESIDENT, NATIONAL ARTS CLUB, NEW YORK, NY Rosary's work has scope: From her Southern Gothic roots, her epic collection of plays about a dysfunctional Louisiana family, to that Boulevard of broken dreams, Hollywood. Finally on to her great insights into the worlds of other great artists of the past, Rosary leaves no stone unturned. Peter Bloch DIRECTOR, NEW YORK, NY

Download or read book Happy Days written by Samuel Beckett and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Happy Days, Samuel Beckett pursues his relentless search for the meaning of existence, probing the tenuous relationships that bind one person to another, and each to the universe, top time past and time present. Once again, stripping theater to its barest essentials, Happy Days offers only two characters: Winnie, a woman of about fifty, and Willie, a man of about sixty. In the first act Winnie is buried up to her waist in a mound of earth, but still has the use of her arms and few earthly possessions—toothbrush, tube of toothpaste, small mirror, revolver, handkerchief, spectacles; in the second act she is embedded up to her neck and can move only her eyes. Willie lives and moves—on all fours—behind the mound, appearing intermittently and replying only occasionally into Winnie’s long monologue, but the knowledge of his presence is a source of comfort and inspiration to her, and doubtless the prerequisite for all her “happy days.”

Book Damned to Fame the Life of Samuel Beckett

Download or read book Damned to Fame the Life of Samuel Beckett written by James Knowlson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: _______________ 'A triumph of scholarship and sympathy... one of the great post-war biographies' - Independent 'A landmark in scholarly criticism... Knowlson is the world's largest Beckett scholar. His life is right up there with George Painter's Proust and Richard Ellmann's Joyce in sensitivity and fascination' - Daily Telegraph 'It is hard to imagine a fuller portrait of the man who gave our age some of the myths by which it lives' - Evening Standard _______________ SHORTLISTED FOR THE WHITBREAD PRIZE _______________ Samuel Beckett's long-standing friend, James Knowlson, recreates Beckett's youth in Ireland, his studies at Trinity College, Dublin in the early 1920s and from there to the Continent, where he plunged into the multicultural literary society of late-1920s Paris. The biography throws new light on Beckett's stormy relationship with his mother, the psychotherapy he received after the death of his father and his crucial relationship with James Joyce. There is also material on Beckett's six-month visit to Germany as the Nazi's tightened their grip. The book includes unpublished material on Beckett's personal life after he chose to live in France, including his own account of his work for a Resistance cell during the war, his escape from the Gestapo and his retreat into hiding. Obsessively private, Beckett was wholly committed to the work which eventually brought his public fame, beginning with the controversial success of "Waiting for Godot" in 1953, and culminating in the award of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969.

  • Pages : 56 pages

Download or read book Stirrings Still written by Samuel Beckett and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dense interior monologue, Stirrings Still was written by Beckett in 1987 and 1988, when he had become increasingly reflective about his life. It portrays, in Beckett's spare style, a "consciousness" exploring a "self," faced with uncertainties about its own existence. Stirrings Still is a spellbinding work, full of a sense of farewell. Originally published in collaboration with John Calder in a limited edition of 226 copies numbered one to two hundred and lettered A to Z, the colume was dedicated to Beckett's longtime friend and publisher Barney Rosset.

Book Stories and Texts for Nothing

Download or read book Stories and Texts for Nothing written by Samuel Beckett and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together three of Nobel Prize winner Samuel Beckett’s major short stories and thirteen shorter pieces of fiction that he calls “texts for nothing.” Here, as in all his work, Beckett relentlessly strips away all but the essential to arrive at a core of truth. His prose reveals the same mastery that marks his work from Waiting for Godot and Endgame to Molloy and Malone Dies. In each of the three stories, old men displaced or expelled from the modest corners where they have been living bestir themselves in search of new corners. Told, “You can’t stay here,” they somehow, doggedly, inevitably, go on. Includes: “The Expelled” “The Calmative” “The End” Texts for Nothing (1-10)
