Book Beauty and the Augsburg Confession

Download or read book Beauty and the Augsburg Confession written by Gaven M. Mize and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To overcome a deficit of art portraying the biblical narratives in churches rooted in the Reformation, Gaven M. Mize and Robert E. Rojas Jr., both active Lutheran pastors, have produced Beauty and the Augsburg Confession: Art Devotion. They provide a theological discourse written in homiletical study for each of the articles of the Augsburg Confession, that document that like no other encapsulates what Lutherans believe. For each of these small chapter an appropriate corresponding work of arts is placed. This is not the first time Pastor Mize has done and with Pastor Rojas continues to demonstrate a mastery of Christian art from the Middle Ages up to the present. Mize and Rojas open for us a another dimension in showing us how art along with the word can open to us the mind of God. In fact this is what the incarnation is all about: Jesus is the exact image of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beauty’s Vineyard: A Theological Aesthetic of Anguish and Anticipation, part spiritual memoir, part systematic theology, opens with an interpretation of the parable of the tenants and concludes with the parable of the workers in the vineyard. In between unfolds a systematic theology of anguish and anticipation in which the author wrestles with the social evils that plague our society and expresses hopeful anticipation for the coming of the “kingdom of God” about which Jesus spoke—a just and peaceful reality in the here and now that will find its ultimate consummation, Christians hope, in the hereafter. A theological understanding of Beauty as the incarnation of the Compassion of God guides the way, bringing the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas into conversation with the liberative theologies of the Global South, through treatments of Trinity, imago Dei, sin, Christology, salvation, theodicy, and hope.

Book excerpt: In this important new volume, Arand, Kolb, and Nestingen bring the fruit of an entire generation of scholarship to bear on these documents, making it an essential and up-to-date class text. The Lutheran Confessions places the documents solidly within their political, social, ecclesiastical and theological contexts, relating them to the world in which they took place. Though the book is not a theology of the Confessions, readers will clearly understand the issues at stake in the narratives, both in their own time, and in ours.

Book The Scandinavian Reformation

Download or read book The Scandinavian Reformation written by Ole Peter Grell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Martin Luther's protest began making an impact in Scandinavia in the 1520s, this region belonged to the religious and political periphery of Europe. A century later the Nordic countries had become of paramount importance to European Protestantism, and it was the intervention of Lutheran Scandinavia in the Thirty Years' War which helped secure the survival of European Protestantism. This volume describes how the Nordic countries came to be solidly Lutheran states by the early seventeenth century; how the evangelical movements differed and succeeded, and the different pace of reform and its institutionalisation. It offers a revisionist view of the role of the Catholic Church in Scandinavia, and its attempts to halt the reformation, and demonstrates the difficulties facing the new Lutheran churches trying to convert a conservative, peasant population to Protestantism.
