Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "brisk and entertaining" (Wall Street Journal) journey into the mystery behind why the forbidden fruit became an apple, upending an explanation that stood for centuries. How did the apple, unmentioned by the Bible, become the dominant symbol of temptation, sin, and the Fall? Temptation Transformed pursues this mystery across art and religious history, uncovering where, when, and why the forbidden fruit became an apple. Azzan Yadin-Israel reveals that Eden’s fruit, once thought to be a fig or a grape, first appears as an apple in twelfth-century French art. He then traces this image back to its source in medieval storytelling. Though scholars often blame theologians for the apple, accounts of the Fall written in commonly spoken languages—French, German, and English—influenced a broader audience than cloistered Latin commentators. Azzan Yadin-Israel shows that, over time, the words for “fruit” in these languages narrowed until an apple in the Garden became self-evident. A wide-ranging study of early Christian thought, Renaissance art, and medieval languages, Temptation Transformed offers an eye-opening revisionist history of a central religious icon.

They are as different as night and day. Caden has always considered Blair an enigma, the way he lights up every room with his self-confidence and perfectly sculpted cheekbones. But since childhood they've drifted worlds apart.Life as an international model isn't all it's cracked up to be, so when Blair escapes to his best friend's beach house for some R&R, he's shocked to discover Caden had the same idea. Apparently, he called it quits with his girlfriend and was looking for a little alone time too.Instead of rock, paper, scissors to determine who gets to stay, they decide to share the house and keep out of each other's way. Easier said than done. As they reconnect, Blair is captivated by Caden's bald honesty. And Caden realizes that Blair isn't a mystery-he's genuine and funny and still utterly gorgeous.Seeing Blair in a new light short-circuits Caden's brain, and before he knows it, he's confiding in Blair about his bi-curiosity. Blair couldn't be more taken aback as advice turns to solace, then ignites into an intense spark neither man anticipated. Blair had done and seen it all, so what could it hurt to help Caden experience some new things? After all, it's only a holiday hookup.Until it's not.*PLEASE NOTE: This book completely stands alone from Beautiful Dreamer and they do not have to be read in order.

Book Overcoming Temptation and Sin

Download or read book Overcoming Temptation and Sin written by John Owen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was Owen's earnest regard that his readers should be brought into a condition of safety against the wiles of the devil, to break the force of his warnings and entreaties by ingenious speculations and irrelevant learning. Not merely in the warm appeals interspersed with his expositions, but in the patient care with which no nook of the heart is left unsearched, does the deep solicitude of Owen for the spiritual welfare of his readers appear. To one who reads the treatise in the spirit with which the author wrote it, --simply that he may judge his own heart, and know what temptation means, and be fully on his guard against it

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My whole life, I knew I was different. Hell, everyone did. I never came out as a gay man to my family, but I didn’t have to. They knew and didn’t accept it. And they never missed an opportunity to shove their religion in my face or tell me what a sinner I was. I took off when I was sixteen and lived on the streets of Dallas, Texas, for a while before the local chapter of Viper’s Venom took me in. Years later, after being personally appointed to the President position of my chapter by the President of the entire crew himself, I couldn’t help but think about how it was the biggest middle finger I could give my parents. The only thing I thought was worth loving was my club. They took a chance on me. I’d lay my life down for them. But then, a brown-haired, doe-eyed angel in disguise crashes into my world and burns all of my walls to the ground. Drake, despite him being twenty years my junior, quickly becomes my entire world. I can’t imagine my heart beating without him by my side. I should really know better, though. Men like me don’t have happily ever afters. So, I should have seen it coming when my darkness envelops the man who owns my soul…

Book Longing Weakness and Temptation

Download or read book Longing Weakness and Temptation written by Irena Avsenik Nabergoj and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-01-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The themes of longing, weakness and temptation are relevant to every human and are interwoven with all fundamental ideals and values of the created, rational being. Temptation is all the more dramatic, the broader the perspective of recognition, the power of human longing and the sense of the difference between good and evil. This book is a summary of a study which compares and contrasts Slovenian and European literary works created under the influence of biblical source texts (Adam and Eve, Joseph from Egypt, Samson and Dalilah, etc.) and the works of other known and unknown origins (Homer’s Iliad, Goethe’s Faust, various versions of the myth of the Fair Vida, etc.). The ascribing of a text to a genre provides the interpreter of the text with a key intertextual framework and with a system of references to other books, other texts, other literary statements. The intertextual approach is obviously appropriate to the study of contents, symbols and forms of literary works. It shows how the source text continues to speak through the new work and how the new work forces new meanings from the source text. Later writers use important themes with a historical sense, when aiming toward a better understanding of authenticity of human existence.
