Download or read book Rihanna written by Sarah Oliver and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-award winning artist and indisputable queen of R&B, Rihanna is one of the most recognisable and successful singers in the world. With hits such as 'Umbrella', 'Take a Bow' and 'Don't Stop the Music', the beautiful Barbadian has gone from a talented young singer from a broken home, to a bestselling and Grammy award-winning superstar. Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, in 1988. Moving to the United States at the tender age of 16, Rihanna became the youngest ever musician to sign for Def Jam records, after sending her demo to the then company head, Jay-Z. Her debut single 'Pon de Replay' went to Number 2 in both the UK and US single charts, with her subsequent album Music of the Sun becoming a global bestseller. Following the success of her debut, Rihanna went straight back into the studio to record her follow-up album with renowned R&B producer and singer, Ne-Yo. A Girl Like Me went platinum in both the UK and US and the lead singer 'SOS' became her biggest selling of her career. A live tour followed and her next three platinum-selling albums, Good Girl Gone Bad, Rated R and Loud, confirmed Rihanna as one of the most exciting and successful artists on the planet. From the shaky beginnings and turbulent times with ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, through to worldwide success as the new Queen of R&B, this is the first biography of the singer who is to her fans The Only Girl in the World.
Download or read book Beauty Queens on the Global Stage written by Colleen Ballerion Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern beauty contests were invented by P.T. Barnum in the United States, but in the 20th century pageants and contests have spread across the entire world from Nepal to Tierra Del Fuego. Why are women (and sometimes men in drag) parading on stage such a universally appealing spectacle, attracting an audience in the billions? This book is the first global comparison of pageants from different parts of the world, at the ways each contest is both intensely local and unique, and simultaneously global and remarkable repetitious. The authors use the latest tools of feminist, ethnographic, and literary scholarship to unpack and interpret one of the greatest and most universal spectacles of modern times.

These contributors are arranged by their role in film production. Cinematographers, composers, actors, actresses, and directors receive complete biographical treatment; writers whose work was used in at least two Westerns are also featured. An appendix lists well-known actors who have appeared in either one or two "A" Westerns, as specified.
Download or read book Irish Theatre in the Twenty First Century written by Nicholas Grene and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irish Theatre in the Twenty-First Century is the first in-depth study of the subject. It analyses the ways in which theatre in Ireland has developed since the 1990s when emerging playwrights Martin McDonagh, Conor McPherson, and Enda Walsh turned against the tradition of lyrical eloquence with a harsh and broken dramatic language. Companies such as Blue Raincoat, the Corn Exchange, and Pan Pan pioneered an avant-garde dramaturgy that no longer privileged the playwright. This led to new styles of production of classic Irish works, including the plays of Synge, mounted in their entirety by Druid. The changed environment led to a re-imagining of past Irish history in the work of Rough Magic and ANU, plays by Owen McCafferty, Stacey Gregg, and David Ireland, dramatizing the legacy of the Troubles, and adaptations of Greek tragedy by Marina Carr and others reflecting the conditions of modern Ireland. From 2015, the movement #WakingTheFeminists led to a sharpened awareness of gender. While male playwrights showed a toxic masculinity on the stage, a generation of female dramatists including Carr, Gregg, and Nancy Harris gave voice to the experiences of women long suppressed in conservative Ireland. For three separate periods, 2006, 2016, 2020-2, the author served as one of the judges for the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards, attending all new productions across the island of Ireland. This allowed him to provide the detailed overview of the 'state of play' of Irish theatre in each of those times which punctuate the book as one of its most innovative features. Drawing also on interviews with Ireland's leading theatre makers, Grene provides readers with a close-up understanding of Irish theatre in a period when Ireland became for the first time a fully modernized, secular, and multi-ethnic society.
