Download or read book Dirty Jokes and Bawdy Songs written by Susan Davis and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collector of sexual folklore. Cataloger of erotica. Tireless social critic. Gershon Legman's singular, disreputable resume made him a counter-cultural touchstone during his forty-year exile in France. Despite his obscurity today, Legman’s prescient work and passion for the prurient laid the groundwork for our contemporary study of the forbidden.Susan G. Davis follows the life and times of the figure driven to share what he found in civilization's secret libraries. Self-taught and fiercely unaffiliated, Legman collected the risqué on street corners and in theaters and dug it out of little-known archives. If the sexual humor he uncovered often used laughter to disguise hostility and fear, he still believed it indispensable to the human experience. Davis reveals Legman in all his prickly, provocative complexity as an outrageous nonconformist thundering at a wrong-headed world while reveling in conflict, violating laws and boundaries with equal abandon, and pursuing love and improbable adventures. Through it all, he maintained a kaleidoscopic network of friends, fellow intellectuals, celebrity admirers, and like-minded obsessives.

Download or read book A Harold Kind of Love written by Faye O. Eddy and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the life story of my son Harold, who was born with disabilities. Because he could not talk he was always frustrated, and frustrating to me, his mother. Although I loved him dearly, he caused me heartache, guilt, shame, fear, and anger. For years I cried out to the Lord for relief. If it had not been for Harold and my desire for relief from such pain, I would not have had the intense desire to see others set free. This is an unbelievable story, showing that a seemingly negative situation can be turned around to become a truly enjoyable journey. The journey is a blessing, not only to Harold and me, but to our entire family who has experienced restoration through the journey. It was in the dark times of my life that I finally began to learn many wonderful truths, which I hope will inspire people to believe that God can do anything when they apply the principles by which I have learned to live. Faye Eddy is 87 years old and is the caregiver for her 93-year-old sister. She has three living children whose ages are 57, 60, and 63. Faye was active in Women's Aglow and served on the Kent and Green River Area boards. She was also liaison for various chapters, helped with retreats and served wherever needed. Faye worked at Renton First Baptist Church and helped many people through her prayers and counsel. She is now retired and her health limits her present activities. Her doctor says it is a miracle that she is still alive. This is Faye's first book. She wrote it because she felt that God wanted her to share her experiences and miracles with others, so that they too, through Jesus, can experience miracles.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.
Download or read book Miracle of Love Stories about Neem Karoli Baba written by Ram Dass and published by Neem Karoli Baba Ashram. This book was released on with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T he material in this volume is culled from over two thousand stories about Maharajji gathered during five years from more than one hundred devotees. To these devotees who shared their treasured memo ries, I wish to express my deep love and appreciation. Some of them felt that no book could or should be written about a being with qualities as vast, formless, and subtle as Maharajji’s, and yet they contributed their stories nevertheless. I honor them for this kindness and I hope that in my zeal to share experiences of Maharajji with others who were not fortu nate enough to have met him, I have not misused their trust. Some devotees tell me that stories told by other devotees are not fac tually accurate. I have no way of ascertaining the authenticity of any single story. All I can report is that those o f us who gathered the stories were impressed by the credibility of those of us who told the stories. Though the responsibility for this manuscript lies solely with me, I am delighted to acknowledge a lot o f loving help from my friends:
