These are the Gifts of Age: the time, the freedom, and hopefully the wisdom to develop creative new images of oneself and one's place in the complexities of a long life. All of the women in this book are more than sixty-five years of age, and included are such well-known personalities as Julia Child, M.F.K. Fisher, Joan Baez Senior, and Louise M. Davies. No two have followed the same path, but each has been successful in achieving some new, frequently unanticipated distinction in her latter years. Gifts of Age is a fascinating insight into just how productive one's extended life can be, and inspiration for anyone who believes that the creative talent for living need not diminish with the passage of years.

Book Expect Something Beautiful

Download or read book Expect Something Beautiful written by Laura Booz and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is motherhood only about self-sacrifice? Or will it bless your life, too? You know that motherhood makes high demands. Yet you know it’s worth the cost because it benefits your child. On some grand level, it’s also good for civilization. And of course, it’s a calling from God. So is that what you’re doing here—pouring out your life for God and others while getting little in return except the consolation that you’ve done the right thing? Laura Booz wants you to expect something more out of motherhood—something truly beautiful. You might be asking: Will I lose myself in motherhood? Compromise my career? Squander my potential? What’s the point of all that unseen (and uncelebrated) serving, cleaning, caring, snuggling, discipling, and praying? Laura wants to help you see that behind all the giving that mothers do is the receiving of something special—a profound growth in God that is cultivated through motherhood’s everyday ups and downs. Let this book give you a renewed vision of motherhood: to see God’s good purpose for you as a mother, a woman, and a follower of Christ.

Book Greeks Bearing Gifts

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lynette Gail Mitchell
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-05-02
  • ISBN : 9780521893305
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Greeks Bearing Gifts written by Lynette Gail Mitchell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using models from social anthropology as its basis, this book looks at the role of personal relationships in classical Greece and their bearing on interstate politics. It begins with a discussion of what friendship meant in the Greek world of the classical period, and then shows how the models for friendship in the private sphere were mirrored in the public sphere at both domestic and interstate level. As well as relations between Greeks (in particular those in Athens and Sparta), Dr Mitchell looks at Greek relations with those on the margins of the Greek world, particularly the state of Macedon, and with neighbouring non-Greeks such as the Thracians and the Persians. She finds that these other cultures did not always have the same understanding of what friendship was, and that this led to misunderstandings and difficulties in the relations between non-Greeks and Greeks.
