Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blue Belles of England, Vol. 2 of 3 The coachman attempted no remonstrance. He had lived two years with her ladyship, during which period he had learned to know that the ardours of bluism are not to be subjected to any of the vulgar laws which influence the doings of ordinary people. He therefore drew up to the side of the street, and making a Signal to the footman to de scend, desired him to go into the porter house before which he had stationed him self, and inquire if they knew a family of the name of Hartley. N was the an swer given to the footman, and N was the answer passed on to the coachman. John tapped at the front window of the chariot, which was immediately let down. Does your ladyship happen to know in what street, or in what square, or may be, near what square, the lady lives? Said he, dipping his head, and pinching his hat. Book A History of the city of Newark New Jersey Volume 2

Download or read book A History of the city of Newark New Jersey Volume 2 written by Frank J. Urquhart and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the writing of this history the aim has been to give in a simple narrative all facts, both great and seemingly small, that tend to show how the Newark of the present day has been built up, generation by generation. Anything and everything that seemed to add life, light and color to the story, that was to be found and was authentic, has been made use of. A sincere effort has been made, also, to make the history attractive and interesting to those who, although they may care little for the reading of history, may wish to become familiar with the making of their own city from the day of its foundation as a hamlet, to the present. This is volume two out of two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1995, Texas Historical Commission underwater archaeologists discovered the wreck of La Salle’s La Belle, remnant of an ill-fated French attempt to establish a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River that landed instead along today’s Matagorda Bay in Texas. During 1996–1997, the Commission uncovered the ship’s remains under the direction of archaeologist James E. Bruseth and employing a team of archaeologists and volunteers. Amid the shallow waters of Matagorda Bay, a steel cofferdam was constructed around the site, creating one of the most complex nautical archaeological excavations ever attempted in North America and allowing the archaeologists to excavate the sunken wreck much as if it were located on dry land. The ship’s hold was discovered full of everything the would-be colonists would need to establish themselves in the New World; more than 1.8 million artifacts were recovered from the site. More than two decades in the making, due to the immensity of the find and the complexity of cataloging and conserving the artifacts, this book thoroughly documents one of the most significant North American archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century.
