Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this report is to present the results of a Landsat imagery analysis of ice movement in the Southern Beaufort Sea. This information, although limited to average motions over periods of one day or more, is important as preliminary design data for exploration and production systems, as well as in environmental protection considerations. In this report, ice movement statistics derived from 1973-1977 Landsat images of the Southern Beaufort Sea are presented for the March to October period. Although averaged over time scales of one day or more, the results indicate that the ice may move with speeds as high as 70 cm/sec. with the highest probability of extreme movements being in October. The results of the analysis also show that the median ice speed and direction values are 14 cm/sec. in a westerly direction for March, 6 cm/sec. in a southwesterly direction for April, and 9 cm/sec. in a west-southwesterly direction for May. In the June through August period, the direction of ice movement is considerably more variable with median ice speeds of 10, 8 and 10 cm/sec. for the months of June, July and August respectively. There does not appear to be any consistent spatial variation in ice movement across the study area. The position of the landfast ice edge was also mapped from the satellite images and seems to vary only slightly from year to year, remaining relatively stable throughout the winter - spring period along the southern boundary of Gulf Canada's acreage"--Leaf 1.

Book excerpt: The ice subsurface characterization project, a multi-year study of the motion and thickness of sea ice in the Beaufort Sea, was begun in April 1990. This report presents the measurements made during the first field year of the project, from April 1990 to March 1991. Observations were made using a four-beam Doppler sonar to measure the velocity of ice movement over the mooring and a narrow-beam ice profiling sonar to measure ice draft. Two sites on the Mackenzie continental shelf north of Tuktoyaktuk were instrumented, One near the middle of the shelf, and the other near the shelf edge. Ice motion measurements were obtained at both sites at all times during the 12-month deployment when sea ice was present. Measurements of ice draft were obtained only at the northern site during April and May 1990. From this location, a topographic profile across almost 350 km of sea ice was surveyed at 1 metre intervals. This profile and a variety of statistical measures of the thickness, topography, and motion of the ice field are presented.
