Book Applied High Resolution Geophysical Methods

Download or read book Applied High Resolution Geophysical Methods written by P.K. Trabant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline encompassing the use of high-resolution geophysics for obtaining geoengineering survey data has evolved rapidly over the past decades to become an interdisciplinary subject encompassing the fields of Geophysics, engineering, geology, marine geology, oceanography, and civil engineering. While high-resolution geophysical surveys are routinely performed offshore today, this has been so only since the late 1960s. High-resolution geophysical methods are employed in the offshore environment to obtain a comprehensive picture of the sea-floor mor phology and underlying shallow stratigraphy. The purpose of the survey methods is to assist in the design and installation of bottom-supported structures such as drilling and production platforms and pipelines. Drilling structures and pipelines of steel and/or concrete have become behemoths with respect to their size and the complexity of their design in order to withstand, for periods of up to twenty-five years, an extremely harsh environment, including storm waves, strong currents, unstable sea floor conditions, and great water depths. It is therefore of paramount importance that the geometry and physical properties of the sea floor be well understood in order to provide an adequate foundation for the design lives of such structures. On land, engineering foundation data usually may be obtained by visual field inspection and shallow borehole information, but offshore the presence of the water column places certain constraints on geoengineering investigations. High-resolution geophysical methods employed in the acquisition of geoengineering data offshore are defined as the use of seismic sources and receivers that operate at acoustic frequencies greater than 100 Hz.

Book Reprocessing of High Resolution Beaufort Sea Seismic Data

Download or read book Reprocessing of High Resolution Beaufort Sea Seismic Data written by Petty-Ray Geophysical Inc and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Earlier this year line 76013 from the 1976 Kenting High Resolution survey was subjected to reassessment via reprocessing. Fairfield Industries, Digitech and Petty Ray were each presented with the same line and asked to reprocess the data. The most successful and least expensive reprocessing was done by Petty Ray in London, England. The success of the reprocessing together with drilling problems encountered in the top 2000 feet of section prompted further reprocessing to be carried out in lesser quality data areas. Petty Ray was chosen to reprocess lines 76020 (Nektoralik to Kopanoar tie line), 76021 (Kaglulik A-75), and line 22 from the 1977 Fairfield Sparker data through Kaglulik. Our centre at Geodigit reprocessed line 76005 (Nerlerk). A short discussion on the reprocessing of line 76005 has been presented separately [described by ASTIS record 42727]. Line 76020 runs from Nektoralik, intersecting with line 76013 where data quality is known to be good and through to Kopanoar where further well control is available. On the included section it has been possible to correlate a high amplitude event at 800 msec (2500 feet) with a series of gas-bearing sand layers. Also, at about 400 msecs (1300 feet), an event has been outlined coincident with base of permafrost. This is seen to disappear somewhere west of Kopanoar. The exact location of the disappearance is not clear but it may be in the vicinity of SP 1360 where an abrupt change is data quality can be seen. The change in data quality is, however, more likely to be a field problem rather than the limit of permafrost. The possibility, however, should not be discounted. Sonic Log/Seismic comparison has already been successful at Nektoralik. Comparison between 76020 and line D-28A shows that greater continuity and definition of events below 0.5 seconds could be achieved by expanding the conventional seismic data than has been achieved from the 1976 H.R. airgun survey. Some H.R. data from the 1978 survey is coincident with exploration lines and a similar comparison should be done to determine the value of the latest H.R. data. The reprocessing of line 76021 was less successful. Three layers have been indicated on the included section of correlation with known permafrost lenses at the well location. The validity and extrapolation of the layers, however, is rather dubious. An event is seen at 550 msecs coincident with a mudstone to sand and siltstone interface and associated water kick. A possible unconformity is indicated. The event, however, appears more continuous and better defined on line HRD-78-3, acquired and processed this year (not included in this discussion). Line K-22 is a sparker line through Kaglulik A-75, acquired during the 1977 site investigations. Severe energy penetration limitations are still the main problem although substantial improvement in the shallow data has been achieved by the reprocessing. In comparison to airgun line 76201, it is seen to be a much higher frequency section although reverberation and interbed multiples are proportionally higher. (Au)."--ASTIS online database.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafloor investigation has long been a feature of not only seismology but also of acoustics. Indeed it was acoustics that produced depth sounders, giving us the first capability of producing both global and local maps of the seafloor. Subsequently, better instrumentation and techniques led to a clearer, more quantitative picture of the seabed itself, which stimulated new hypotheses such as seafloor spreading through the availability of more reliable data on sediment thickness over ocean basins and other bottom features. Geologists and geophysicists have used both acoustic and seismic methods to study the seabed by considering the propagation of signals arising from both natural seismic events and man-made impulsive sources. Although significant advances have been made in instrumentation, such as long towed geophysical arrays, ai r guns and ocean bot tom seismometers, the pic ture of the seafloor is still far from complete. Underwater acoustics concerns itself today with the phenomena of propagation and noise at frequencies and ranges that require an understanding of acoustic interaction at both of its boundaries, the sea surface and seafloor, over depths ranging from tens to thousands of meters. Much of the earlier higher frequency (>1 kHz) work included the characterization of the seafloor in regimes of reflection coefficients which were empirically derived from surveys. The results of these studies met with only limited success, confined as they were to those areas where survey data existed and lacking a physical understanding of the processes of reflection and scattering.
