Book American Diary 1898

Download or read book American Diary 1898 written by Beatrice Webb and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1898 Beatrice Webb, with her husband, the eminent Sidney Webb (co-founder of the Fabian Society), and a companion, Charles Trevelyan, visited the United States on one lap of a tour that took them also to Australia and New Zealand. An inveterate diarist, Mrs. Webb kept a detailed journal of her experiences and impressions, of which this is the American portion. Too provincial and too British to appreciate fully what she saw abroad, Mrs. Webb was, nevertheless, keenly perceptive, and her impressions are of great value because she brought an informed and intelligent mind from outside America to focus on her subject. Though sometimes superficial and frequently barbed, she is never dull and in many of her insights is ahead of her time. The current interest of the Webbs was in problems of city government, and they took pains to seek out and interview a number of people who were prominent or were later to become prominent in American affairs including Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, John Peter Altgeld, Jane Addams, Lillian Wald, 'Czar' Reed, and numerous college professors"--Jacket.

Download or read book 1898 written by David Traxel and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1898: The Birth of the American Century, David Traxel tells the story of a watershed year, a year of foreign conflict, extravagant adventure, and breakneck social change that forged a new America—a sudden empire with many far-flung possessions, a dynamic new player upon the global stage. At the heart of this vivid, anecdotal history is a masterly account of the Spanish-American War, the "splendid little war" that garnered the nation Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. From the sinking of the Maine in waters off Havana to Teddy Roosevelt's rough riders and the triumph of Admiral Dewey, here is the lightning-swift military episode that transformed America into a world power. Here too are many stories not so often told—the bloody first successes of the new United Mine Workers, the tentative beginnings of the Ford Motor Company, the million-dollar launch of the Uneeda Biscuit—each in its way as important as the harbinger of the American century. Compulsively readable, frequently humorous, utterly fascinating in its every detail, 1898 is popular history at its finest.

Book A Guide to the Papers of British Cabinet Ministers 1900 1964

Download or read book A Guide to the Papers of British Cabinet Ministers 1900 1964 written by Cameron Hazlehurst and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide to the Papers of British Cabinet Ministers 1900-1964 is the revised and expanded edition of a volume first published by The Royal Historical Society in 1974. Its aim is to provide up-to-date information on the papers of 323 ministers in the first edition and include all Cabinet ministers (or those who held positions included in a Cabinet) until the resignation of Sir Alec Douglas-Home as Prime Minister in 1964. Thus the scope of this edition has increased from the 323 ministers in the first Guide to 384, and therefore incorporates those who held relevant positions in the Churchill, Eden, Macmillan and Home governments. Information is provided on 60 'new' ministers and the previously omitted Lord Stanley. This Guide therefore is a major research tool and a source of information on personal papers, often in private hands, of people who played major roles in twentieth-century political life.

Download or read book Uncertain Victory written by James T. Kloppenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988-03-24 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1870 and 1920, two generations of European and American intellectuals created a transatlantic community of philosophical and political discourse. Uncertain Victory, the first comparative study of ideas and politics in France, Germany, the U.S., and Great Britain during these fifty years, demonstrates how a number of thinkers from different traditions converged to create the theoretical foundations for new programs of social democracy and progressivism. Kloppenberg studies a wide range of pivotal theorists and activists--including philosophers such as William James, Wilhelm Dilthey, and T. H. Green, democratic socialists such as Jean Jaurès, Walter Rauschenbusch, Eduard Bernstein, and Beatrice and Sidney Webb, and social theorists such as John Dewey and Max Weber--as he establishes the connection between the philosophers' challenges to the traditions of empiricism and idealism and the activists' opposition to the traditions of laissez-faire liberalism and revolutionary socialism. By demonstrating a link between a philosophy of self-conscious uncertainty and a politics of continuing democratic experimentation, and by highlighting previously unrecognized similarities among a number of prominent 19th- and 20th-century thinkers, Uncertain Victory is sure to spur a reassessment of the relationship between ideas and politics on both sides of the Atlantic.

Book excerpt: In this sweeping narrative, acclaimed political historian Lewis L. Gould chronicles over one hundred years of Senate history, from the Progressive Era to the war in Iraq. Over the course of the twentieth century, the most powerful legislative body in the world grappled with great questions of empire and democracy, war and peace, capital and labor, fascism and communism, race relations, women's rights, and terrorism. In addition to towering figures such as Henry Cabot Lodge, Sr., William E. Borah, and Lyndon Johnson, Gould also highlights the stories of lesser-known Senate leaders who have played vital roles in America's upper house. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, controversy surrounding the Senate is intensifying-as is its political power. Lewis L. Gould's masterful history is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the past, present, and future of American politics.
