Book The Propaganda Model Today

Download or read book The Propaganda Model Today written by Joan Pedro-Carañana and published by University of Westminster Press. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the individual elements of the propaganda system (or filters) identified by the Propaganda Model (PM) – ownership, advertising, sources, flak and anti-communism – have previously been the focus of much scholarly attention, their systematisation in a model, empirical corroboration and historicisation have made the PM a useful tool for media analysis across cultural and geographical boundaries. Despite the wealth of scholarly research Herman and Chomsky’s work has set into motion over the past decades, the PM has been subjected to marginalisation, poorly informed critiques and misrepresentations. Interestingly, while the PM enables researchers to form discerning predictions as regards corporate media performance, Herman and Chomsky had further predicted that the PM itself would meet with such marginalisation and contempt. In current theoretical and empirical studies of mass media performance, uses of the PM continue, nonetheless, to yield important insights into the workings of political and economic power in society, due in large measure to the model’s considerable explanatory power.

  • Author : Tim Lang
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

  • ISBN : 0191015717
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Food Policy written by Tim Lang and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over half a century, food policy has mapped a path for progress based upon a belief that the right mix of investment, scientific input, and human skills could unleash a surge in productive capacity which would resolve humanity's food-related health and welfare problems. It assumed that more food would yield greater health and happiness by driving down prices, increasing availability, and feeding more mouths. In the 21st century, this policy mix is quietly becoming unstuck. In a world marred by obesity alongside malnutrition, climate change alongside fuel and energy crises, water stress alongside more mouths to feed, and social inequalities alongside unprecedented accumulation of wealth, the old rubric of food policy needs re-evaluation. This book explores the enormity of what the new policy mix must address, taking the approach that food policy must be inextricably linked with public health, environmental damage, and social inequalities to be effective. Written by three authors with differing backgrounds, one in political science, another in environmental health and health promotion, and the third in social psychology, this book reflects the myriad of perspectives essential to a comprehensive view of modern food policy. It attempts to make sense of what is meant by food policy; explores whether the term has any currency in current policy discourse; assesses whether current policies help or hinder what happens; judges whether consensus can triumph in the face of competing bids for understanding; looks at all levels of governance, across the range of actors in the food system, from companies and the state to civil society and science; considers what direction food policies are taking, not just in the UK but internationally; assesses who (and what) gains or loses in the making of these food policies; and identifies a modern framework for judging how good or limited processes of policy-making are. This book provides a major comprehensive review of current and past food policy, thinking and proposing the need for what the authors call an ecological public health approach to food policy. Nothing less will be fit for the 21st century.

Book Promoting Wellness and Resiliency in Correctional Officers

Download or read book Promoting Wellness and Resiliency in Correctional Officers written by Hayden P. Smith and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Correctional officers face considerable stress, risk, and danger that lead to poor physical and mental health outcomes. In fact, their life expectancy is 15 years shorter than the national average. Public perception and media portrayals of correctional officers tend to reinforce stereotypes of brutish, improper, and uncontrolled behavior. Yet the reality is that correctional officers are operating a default public and mental health system for a sizeable portion of our society, a responsibility that exposes them to considerable risk. These negative effects have been compounded by an international staffing crisis that has made our jails and prisons far less safe for working officers. To address this situation, this book features an examination of a combined 11,313 correctional officers and 42 of their family members in the United States, Canada, and Europe. It explores proactive strategies that can reduce rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in correctional officers, which currently surpasses those found in returning military veterans who experienced combat. It then delves into the dynamics of correctional officer suicide, featuring the perspectives of their families. This book highlights innovative approaches that can build on existing strengths including the role of international exchange programs. It presents universal themes that impact the safety, wellbeing, and resiliency of correctional officers, along with positive outcomes related to evidence-based programs that maximize health in the correctional workplace. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of criminology, mental health, public policy, social work, and sociology. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Criminal Justice Studies.

Book Economic Logic Fourth Edition

Download or read book Economic Logic Fourth Edition written by Mark Skousen and published by Regnery Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Eureka! Skousen has done the impossible. Students love it! I will never use another textbook again.”—Harry Veryser, University of Detroit-Mercy They said it couldn’t be done. Austrian economics is so different, they said, that it couldn’t be integrated into standard “neo-classical” textbooks. Consequently, college students learn nothing about the great Austrian economists (Mises, Hayek, Schumpeter). Professor Mark Skousen’s Economic Logic aims to change that. Based on his popular course taught at Columbia University, Skousen starts his “micro” section with Carl Menger’s “theory of the good” and the profit-and-loss income statement to explain the dynamics of the market process, entrepreneurship, and the advantages of saving. Then he uses a powerful Hayekian four-stage model of the economy to introduce “macro,” including a new Austrian measure of spending at all stages of production (Gross Domestic Expenditures). Economic Logic also offers chapters on: The international gold standard, the defects of central banking, and the Mises/Hayek theory of the business cycle. A full critique of the Keynesian Aggregate Supply and Demand (AS-AD) model, and a revolutionary Austrian alternative. Entrepreneurship, the financial markets, environmental economics, monetary policy and inflation, federal spending and taxes, and government regulation. Leaders of all schools, including Austrian, Keynesians, Marxist, Chicago, and Public Choice.

Book Taking on the Bully taxman

Download or read book Taking on the Bully taxman written by Elly Foote and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A soul-wrenching tale of one family falsely accused of criminal tax evasion. Nathan and Elly arrived in Canada in 1973, after travelling five years on horseback through the three Americas. They became Canadian citizens, raised a family and carved a ranch out of the wilderness in northern British Columbia with Belgian draft horses. In 2006, inexplicably, the family was swept up in the Canada-wide wave of terror originating with the Harper government, intended to spread fear among small business owners, and, through fear, taxpayer compliance. And to divert attention from the off -shore tax havens of the rich. Trail hardened and resilient, Nathan and Elly would not allow themselves to become victims of a bully. They launched a civil lawsuit against the tax agency that attacked them without merit, mercy, or fact. They acted as their own lawyers. The battle lasted ten years. This small book has a big message: when you have the guts to stand up for what you believe, no one has power over you!

Book Restorative Justice in a Prison Community

Download or read book Restorative Justice in a Prison Community written by Cheryl Swanson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans are frustrated with prisons. They recognize the need for these institutions, but at the same time, they worry about whether the money used to build and maintain them is well spent. Older prisons are dirty, disgusting, and dangerous, but even newer facilities come up lacking in terms of offering inmates opportunities to take responsibility for their crimes, support their loved ones, further their education, learn job skills, and develop positive relationships in healthy, safe, respectful communities. This book provides insight into the philosophy of restorative justice, which aims to develop ways we can manage our prisons differently to achieve more positive outcomes. Using the case study of an honor dorm in a maximum security prison, the book posits that most of the inmates never learned the basic tools for living life productively and responsibly. They never thought much about their victims or how their actions affected others. They never learned how to get along with others, pick up after themselves, or how to be of service to their fellow man. Swanson uses the writings and reflections of inmates participating in a restorative justice program to demonstrate the challenges and transformative possibilities of this alternative approach to rehabilitation.
