Book Temptations Of Big Bear

  • Author : Rudy Wiebe
  • Publisher : Vintage Canada
  • Release : 2010-11-05
  • ISBN : 0307366227
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Temptations Of Big Bear written by Rudy Wiebe and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-11-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in his writing career, Rudy Wiebe’s imagination was caught by a heroic character of Cree and Ojibwa ancestry whose birthplace was within twenty-five miles of where Wiebe himself was born 110 years later. The man’s name translated into English was Big Bear, and he came to be the subject of one of Wiebe’s most highly praised works of fiction. A modern classic, Wiebe’s fourth novel is a moving epic of the tumultuous history of the Canadian West. The book won the 1973 Governor General's Award, and in the 1990s was made into a CBC television miniseries based on a script co-written by Wiebe and Métis director Gil Cardinal, shot in Saskatchewan’s Qu’Appelle Valley. From the early days of North America, European settlers forced Natives aside, taking over their land on which they had lived for thousands of years. Big Bear envisioned a Northwest in which all peoples lived together peaceably, and in the 1880s made history by standing his ground to keep his Plains Cree nation from being forced onto reserves. The buffalo food supply was vanishing, but Big Bear led his people across the prairie, resisting pressure to cede rights to the land and give up freedom in exchange for temporary nourishment. The struggle brought starvation to his followers, tearing apart the community and eventually his own family. The story follows Big Bear’s life as he lives through the last buffalo hunt, the coming of the railway, the pacification of the Native tribes, and his own imprisonment. Wiebe’s magnificent interpretation of Western Canadian history encompasses not only his hero's struggle for integrity and justice but also the whole richness of the Plains culture.

Book Tempted and Tried

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Tempted and Tried written by Russell Moore and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although temptation is a common and well-acknowledged part of the human experience, few realize the truth behind temptation and fewer still know how to defeat it. Tempted and Tried will not reassure Christians by claiming that temptation is less powerful or less prevalent than it is; instead, it will prepare believers for battle by telling the truth about the cosmic war that is raging. Moore shows that the temptation of every Christian is part of a broader conspiracy against God, a conspiracy that confronts everyone who shares the flesh of Jesus through human birth and especially confronts those who share the Spirit of Christ through the new birth of redemption. Moore walks readers through the Devil's ancient strategies for temptation revealed in Jesus' wilderness testing. Moore considers how those strategies might appear in a contemporary context and points readers to a way of escape. Tempted and Tried will remind Christians that temptation must be understood in terms of warfare, encouraging them with the truth that victory has already been secured through the triumph of Christ.

Book Fear and Temptation

Download or read book Fear and Temptation written by Terry Goldie and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1993 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goldie skillfully reveals the ambivalence of white writers to indigenous culture through an examination of the stereotyping involved in the creation of the image of the "Other." The treacherous "redskin" and the "Indian maiden," embodiments of violence and sex, also evoke emotional signs of fear and temptation, of white repulsion from and attraction to the indigene and the land. Goldie suggests that white culture, deeply attracted to the impossible idea of becoming indigenous, either rejects native land claims and denies recognition of the original indigenes, or incorporates these claims into white assertions of native status. After comparing the works of Canadian author Rudy Wiebe and Australian author Patrick White, Goldie concludes by linking the results of his literary analysis to wider cultural concerns, particularly land rights. He shows that literary views of natives, both positive and negative, emphasize the same charac-teristics and he suggests that escape from this limited vision may open the door to solving the problems of native sovereignty.

Book Extraordinary Canadians Big Bear

Download or read book Extraordinary Canadians Big Bear written by Rudy Wiebe and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2008-12-02 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Bear (1825–1888) was a Plains Cree chief in Saskatchewan at a time when aboriginals were confronted with the disappearance of the buffalo and waves of European settlers that seemed destined to destroy the Indian way of life. In 1876 he refused to sign Treaty No. 6, until 1882, when his people were starving. Big Bear advocated negotiation over violence, but when the federal government refused to negotiate with aboriginal leaders, some of his followers killed 9 people at Frog Lake in 1885. Big Bear himself was arrested and imprisoned. Rudy Wiebe, author of a Governor General’s Award–winning novel about Big Bear, revisits the life of the eloquent statesman, one of Canada’s most important aboriginal leaders.

Book The Nature Danger and Cure of Temptation

Download or read book The Nature Danger and Cure of Temptation written by Richard Capel and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterful treatise on temptation, Capel explains that God’s honor is on the line, and what will Christians do to uphold his honor amidst those temptations? Will they give in easily, or will they fight? Do they know how to fight? Are they successful in their fight? How do they know? Capel explains the substance of a temptation (what it is), what it means that one is drawn aside into temptation, what being enticed to sin means, and what it means to be tempted to lust (lust being a hinge for all temptation). He will show how temptations come from the world, the flesh and the devil. He gives general rules for dealing with temptations, as well as specific remedies to fight against them. He is particularly keen on dissecting the way Christians ought to resist all temptations to sin, and what the order of resisting is in doing so. He shows that no temptations can be won over without the power of Christ through the Spirit, and how that work is accomplished in God’s people. A most excellent section to this treatise is Capel’s vivid depiction of how one sin (which a Christian falls into by a powerful temptation) will give way to other sins. How deep-buried sins (not regularly seen) are actually the foundation of other temptations to sin which the Christian looks to cast off, but cannot, until the original deep-rooted sin is cast out first. That section is worth its weight in gold for the Christian who desires to live victoriously against all sin for the glory of Jesus Christ. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
