Book Body Dialectics in the Age of Goethe

Download or read book Body Dialectics in the Age of Goethe written by Marianne Henn and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In opposition to an essentialist conceptualization, the social construct of the human body in literature can be analyzed and described by means of effective methodologies that are based on Discourse Theory, Theory of Cultural Transmission and Ecology, System Theory, and Media Theory. In this perspective, the body is perceived as a complex arrangement of substantiation, substitution, and omission depending on demands, expectations, and prohibitions of the dominant discourse network. The term Body-Dialectics stands for the attempt to decipher - and for a moment freeze - the web of such discursive arrangements that constitute the fictitious notion of the body in the framework of a specific historic environment, here in the Age of Goethe.

Book The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason

Download or read book The Rose Cross and the Age of Reason written by Christopher McIntosh and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-01-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Christopher McIntosh's classic book on the Golden and Rosy Cross order is eagerly awaited. The order stands out as one of the most fascinating and influential of the high-degree masonic and illuminist groups that mushroomed in Europe from the 18th century onward. Active mainly in the German-speaking lands, it recast the original Rosicrucian vision and gave it renewed vitality. At one point it became politically influential when the Prussian King, Frederick William II, was a member of the order. Historians have often perceived the Golden and Rosy Cross as having had a conservative, anti-Enlightenment agenda, but this study – drawing on rare German sources – shows that the matter was more complex. The members of the order practiced alchemy and operated a degree system that was later imitated by later orders such as the Golden Dawn. Like the latter, the Golden and Rosy Cross exerted a wide and enduring cultural influence. Both the alchemy of the order and its powerful ritual system are insightfully described in Christopher McIntosh's clear and compelling style.

Book Kant and the Future of the European Enlightenment

Download or read book Kant and the Future of the European Enlightenment written by Heiner Klemme and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Impure Reason

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. Daniel Wilson
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 1993
  • ISBN : 9780814324967
  • Pages : 508 pages

Download or read book Impure Reason written by W. Daniel Wilson and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the premise that the modem discourse of enlightenment and its self-critique began in the eighteenth century, Impure Reason provides a fresh look at the controversy through cultural, social, and political history, confronting the often abstract theories of a dialectics of enlightenment with concrete historical studies of the Age of Enlightenment. This volume brings together current research on the German Enlightenment in order to familiarize an American audience with the period that gave rise to Lessing, Kant, and Goethe-as well as to other important figures who are practically unknown outside of German studies. Leading scholars on eighteenth-century German society, politics, literature, and culture bring a uniquely American perspective to the project, with critiques that generally have not been voiced in Germany. Their essays, which represent a wide range of attitudes toward enlightenment, cover topics as varied as the debate on colonialism; the difficulties of diversity; the use and abuse of reading; male sexuality in enlightenment self-critique; medicine, patriarchy, and heterosexuality; art and social discipline; disturbed mourning and the Enlightenment's flight from the body; and women possessed by the devil. Modem critics and defenders of enlightenment who are discussed in the essays include Horkheimer and Adorno (who are themselves subjected to a genderbased critique), Jurgen Habermas, Jean-Franvois Lyotard, Manfred Frank, Richard Rorty, and Christa Wolf. Impure Reason will interest scholars in German studies, gender studies, history, philosophy, psychology, pedagogy, and other fields. The volume will also help introduce scholars and other interested readers outside the area of German studies to the particularly German tradition of Enlightenment critique and its status today.

Book Katholische Aufkl rung M glichkeiten Grenzen und Kritik eines Konzepts der Aufkl rungsforschung

Download or read book Katholische Aufkl rung M glichkeiten Grenzen und Kritik eines Konzepts der Aufkl rungsforschung written by Martin Mulsow and published by Felix Meiner Verlag. This book was released on 2022-04-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Das Prinzip Aufkl rung zwischen Universalismus und partikularem Anspruch written by Kristina-Monika Hinneburg and published by Brill Fink. This book was released on 2014 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
