Book excerpt: The authors have summarized the main features of the beam-beam simulation code TRS and presented two sample applications to the PEP-II collider. The code has been successfully tested against analytic results and against other simulation codes whenever such comparisons are meaningful. The soft-gaussian approximation is believed to represent reliably incoherent beam-beam effects. The code has been used to perform studies for the PEP-II collider. For example, simulated tune scans reveal undesirable operating points due to beam blowup from synchrotron sidebands. The dynamical beta effect, clearly seen in these simulations, also influences the choice of a working point. The code has been used to establish the adequate beam separation at the parasitic collision points [24], and has been applied to the proposed muon collider [25], including the effects from the instability of the muon.

Book excerpt: We present beam-beam simulation results from a strong-strong gaussian code for separated beams for the LHC and RHIC. The frequency spectrum produced by the beam-beam collisions is readily obtained and offers a good opportunity for experimental comparisons. Although our results for the emittance blowup are preliminary, we conclude that, for nominal parameter values, there is no significant difference between separated beams and center-on-center collisions.

Book excerpt: Due to various upstream beam manipulations, the longitudinal bunch shape at the interactions point of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) is highly non-Gaussian. In this paper, we report beam-beam simulations with realistic longitudinal bunch shapes for the present SLC parameters and for the SLC-2000 luminosity upgrade. The simulation results allow us to estimate the luminosity enhancement due to the pinch effect and to find optimum parameter settings for the bunch compressor and the linac.

Book excerpt: In this paper, we present a parallel computational tool, BeamBeam3D, developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, for strong-strong/strong-weak beam-beam modeling. This tool calculates self-consistently the electromagnetic beam-beam forces for arbitrary distributions during each collision when a strong-strong beam-beam interaction model is used. When a strong-weak model is used, the code has the option of using a Gaussian approximation for the strong beam. BeamBeam3D uses a multiple-slice model, so finite bunch length effects can be studied. The code also includes a Lorentz boost and rotation to treat collisions with finite collision crossing angle. It handles arbitrary closed-orbit separation (static or time dependent) and models long-range beam-beam interactions using a newly developed shifted Green function approach. It can also handle multiple interaction points using externally supplied linear maps between interaction points in the strong-weak model. The code has been used to study beam-beam effects in the RHIC, Tevatron, and LHC. In this paper we will describe the BeamBeam3D code, present example simulations, and describe the code performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we present a news approach, based on a shifted Green function, to evaluate the electromagnetic field in a simulation of colliding beams. Unlike a conventional particle-mesh code, we use a method in which the computational mesh covers only the largest of the two colliding beams. This allows us to study long-range parasitic collisions accurately and efficiently. We have implemented this algorithm in a new parallel strong-strong beam-beam simulation code. As an application, we present a study of a beam sweeping scheme for the LBNL luminosity monitor of the Large Hadron Collider.

Book excerpt: While conventional tracking codes can readily provide higher-order optical quantities and give an estimate of dynamic apertures, they are unable to provide directly measurable quantities such as lifetimes and loss rates. The particle tracking framework Plibb aims at modeling a storage ring with sufficient accuracy and a sufficiently high number of turns and in the presence of beam-beam interactions to allow for an estimate of these quantities. We provide a description of new features of the codes; we also describe a novel method of treating chromaticity in ring sections in a symplectic fashion.

Book excerpt: A package of programs for weak-strong simulation of beam-beam effects in hadron colliders is described. Accelerator optics parameters relevant to the simulation are derived from beam measurements and calculations are made using OptiM optics code. The key part of the package is the upgraded version of the LIFETRAC code which now includes 2D coupled optics, chromatic modulation of beta-functions, non-Gaussian shape of the strong bunches and non-linear elements for beam-beam compensation. Parallel computations are used and in the case of the Tevatron (2 main IPs + 70 parasitic IPs) the code has a productivity of {approx} 10{sup 10} particles x turns/day on a 32-node cluster of Pentium-IV 1.8 GHz processors.
