Book excerpt: Electromagnetic long-range and head-on interactions of high intensity proton and antiproton beams are significant sources of beam loss and lifetime limitations in the Tevatron Collider Run II (2001-present). We present observations of the beam-beam phenomena in the Tevatron and results of relevant beam studies. We analyze the data and various methods employed in high energy physics (HEP) operation, predict the performance for planned luminosity upgrades and discuss ways to improve it.

Book Compensation of Beam Beam Effects in the Tevatron Collider

Book excerpt: Compensation of beam-beam effects in the Tevatron with electron beams has been recently suggested to improve the collider performance [1,2}. The method implies that an antiproton beam propagates through a countertraveling low-energy high-current electron beam ("electron lens"). An impact of the negative electron space charge can reduce betatron tune spread within antiproton bunch and a bunch-to-bunch tune spread - the effects due to collision with intensive proton beam responsible for reduction of the beam lifetime and luminosity. A prototype device for the beam-beam compensation in the Tevatron has been commissioned at Fermilab. We describe basic principles of the beam-beam compensation, represent the experimental set-up and report results of the first tests of the electron beam.

Book Simulation of Beam beam Effects in Tevatron

Download or read book Simulation of Beam beam Effects in Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fermilab accelerator complex is in the middle of an upgrade plan Fermilab III. In the last phase of this upgrade the luminosity of the Tevatron will increase by at least one order of magnitude. In order to keep the number of interactions per crossing manageable for experiments, the number of bunches will be increased from 6 x 6 to 36 x 36 and finally to (approximately)100 x 100 bunches. The beam dynamics of the Tevatron has been studied from Beam-Beam effect point of view in a ''Strong-Weak'' representation with a single particle being tracked in presence of other beam. This paper describes the beam-beam effect in 6 x 6 operation of Tevatron.

Book Beam beam Effects in the Tevatron

Book excerpt: The Tevatron in Collider Run II (2001-present) is operating with 6 times more bunches, many times higher beam intensities and luminosities than in Run I (1992-1995). Electromagnetic long-range and head-on interactions of high intensity proton and antiproton beams have been significant sources of beam loss and lifetime limitations. We present observations of the beam-beam phenomena in the Tevatron and results of relevant beam studies. We analyze the data and various methods employed in operations, predict the performance for planned luminosity upgrades, and discuss ways to improve it.

Book Long Term Simulation of Beam Beam Effects in the Tevatron at Collision Energy

Download or read book Long Term Simulation of Beam Beam Effects in the Tevatron at Collision Energy written by A. C. Kabel and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beam-beam effect is a significant source of nonlinearities in the Tevatron. We have developed a code which allows us to estimate its contribution to the finite lifetime of the anti-proton beam, both at collision and injection energy, by tracking realistic particle distribution for a high number of terms and extrapolating from the particle loss rate. We describe the physical modeling underlying the code and give benchmarking results.

Book Simulations of the Tevatron Beam Dynamics with Beam beam Compensation

Download or read book Simulations of the Tevatron Beam Dynamics with Beam beam Compensation written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compensation of beam-beam effects in the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider by using a counter-traveling electron beam is a subject of on-going experimental project at Fermilab. In this article, the authors present results of numerical tracking of the Tevatron particles in the presence of the beam-beam compensation setup. Their studies cover a wide range of issues relevant to compensation of the bunch-to-bunch tune spread (so called linear compensation): electron beam current distribution and size, straightness of the electron beam, misalignment of the electron and antiproton beams, the time to bring the electron and antiproton beams into collision, the effects of noise in the electron beam, and the effect on the proton beam.

Book Theoretical Studies of Beam beam Effects in the Tevatron at Collision Energy

Download or read book Theoretical Studies of Beam beam Effects in the Tevatron at Collision Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamics due to the long-range beam-beam interactions depends on several beam parameters such as tunes, coupling, chromaticities, beam separations, intensities and emittances. They have developed analytical tools to calculate, for example, amplitude dependent tune shifts and chromaticities, beam-beam induced coupling, and betatron and synchro-betatron resonance widths. They report on these calculations and dynamic aperture calculations with long-term tracking. These theoretical results are compared with observations at collision energy and used to predict performance at design values of beam intensities and emittances.

Book Accelerator Physics at the Tevatron Collider

Download or read book Accelerator Physics at the Tevatron Collider written by Valery Lebedev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the developments in accelerator physics and technology implemented at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the world’s most powerful accelerator for almost twenty years prior to the completion of the Large Hadron Collider. The book covers the history of collider operation and upgrades, novel arrangements of beam optics and methods of orbit control, antiproton production and cooling, beam instabilities and feedback systems, halo collimation, and advanced beam instrumentation. The topics discussed show the complexity and breadth of the issues associated with modern hadron accelerators, while providing a systematic approach needed in the design and construction of next generation colliders. This book is a valuable resource for researchers in high energy physics and can serve as an introduction for students studying the beam physics of colliders.

Book Beam Beam Tune Shifts for 36 Bunch Operation in the Tevatron

Download or read book Beam Beam Tune Shifts for 36 Bunch Operation in the Tevatron written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are preparing to upgrade the Tevatron Collider from 6 to 36 bunch operation. The 36 bunches are in 3 ''trains'' of 12 bunches. The spacing between bunches within a train is 21 RF buckets (53.106 MHz) and 139 empty buckets separate the trains. Because the 36 bunches are not evenly spaced around the machine, the different bunches within a train pass the opposing bunches at different points in the ring and so feel different beam beam effects. Through most of the machine the beams have helical separation, so these are mainly long range beam beam effects. As a first, very simple step, we've looked at the differences in the tunes of the different anti-proton ({anti p}) bunches. During the 36 bunch studies in Fall 1995, we used a new tune measurement system to measure these in several different machine conditions. We compare these measurements to calculations of the tunes for a {anti p} with zero transverse and longitudinal oscillation amplitudes. We discuss experimental problems, and the assumptions, approximations, and effects included in the calculations. Our main intent is to gain confidence that we can accurately model beam beam effects in the Tevatron.

Book Experimental Studies of Compensation of Beam Beam Effects with Tevatron Electron Lenses

Download or read book Experimental Studies of Compensation of Beam Beam Effects with Tevatron Electron Lenses written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applying the space-charge forces of a low-energy electron beam can lead to a significant improvement of the beam-particle lifetime limit arising from the beam-beam interaction in a high-energy collider [1]. In this article we present the results of various beam experiments with 'electron lenses', novel instruments developed for the beam-beam compensation at the Tevatron, which collides 980-GeV proton and antiproton beams. We study the dependencies of the particle betatron tunes on the electron beam current, energy and position; we explore the effects of electron-beam imperfections and noises; and we quantify the improvements of the high-energy beam intensity and the collider luminosity lifetime obtained by the action of the Tevatron Electron Lenses.

Book Tevatron Accelerator Physics and Operation Highlights
