Book excerpt: Located 60 km east of the seismically active Middle America Trench off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, the Nicoya Peninsula experiences frequent, large magnitude (M>7) subduction zone earthquake events roughly every 50 years. The high potential for earthquake damage motivates extensive regional seismic monitoring. Previous work (e.g., Marshall et al., 1995) suggests ongoing seismic activity, in particular the large earthquakes, is responsible for the creation of a sequence of marine and fluvial terraces on the Nicoya Peninsula. During June and July, 2014 we measured multiple topographic profiles on four beaches (Playa San Juanillo, Playa Pelada, Playa Garza, and Playa Carrillo) spanning ~60 km of shoreline along the western coast of the Nicoya Peninsula to examine trends in beach morphology. These profilescaptured details of slope, sediment characteristics such as grain size, and lateral and vertical distribution of debris lines and berms. Two distincthigh tide signatures occurred on all studied beaches. The displacement of these signatures was interpreted as an uplift proxy. The recent September 5, 2012 M7.6 earthquake uplifted the Nicoya Peninsula. Protti and others (2013) used campaign and continuous GPS stations to determine vertical uplift distribution along the coast. Reported uplift values were compared to geomorphic uplift values taken fron measured beach berm displacement. The geomorphic uplift values ranged from ~0.5 m to ~1.15 m and were roughly double teh GPS values, but both reflected a trend of increasing uplift toward the south. Surface morphology, specifically the displacement and preservation of high tide berms, functions as a proxy for uplift incited by coseismic activity. We attribute the differences between uplift documented by GPS and uiplift reflected in berm elevation change to the dynamic processes that dictate beach morphology such as sediment characteristics, wave energy, and sea level.
