Book Bd Mixing Measurements with the Babar Detector

Download or read book Bd Mixing Measurements with the Babar Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B[sup 0][bar B][sup 0] oscillation frequency[Delta] m[sub d] has been measured with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric B factory with different experimental techniques. The discussion here is focused on the recent simultaneous measurement of[Delta] m[sub d] and[tau][sub B[sup 0]] with exclusively reconstructed B[sup 0][yields] D*[sup -][ell][sup+][nu][sub l] decays, based on 23 million B[bar B] pairs collected by BABAR. The measurements of[Delta] m[sub d] with fully reconstructed hadronic decays and with dilepton events are also reviewed. The average BABAR result is[Delta] m[sub d]= 0.500[+-] 0.008[+-] 0.006 ps[sup -1].

Book B Decays

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sheldon Stone
  • Publisher : World Scientific
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN : 9789810218362
  • Pages : 676 pages

Download or read book B Decays written by Sheldon Stone and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2nd edition is an extensive update of "B Decays?. The revisions are necessary because of the extensive amount of new data and new theoretical ideas. This book reviews what is known about b-quark decays and also looks at what can be learned in the future. The importance of this research area is increasing, as evidenced by the approval of the luminosity upgrade for CESR and the asymmetric B factories at SLAC and KEK, and the possibility of experiments at hadron colliders. The key experimental observations made thus far, measurement of the lifetimes of the different B species, B0-B0 mixing, the discovery of ?Penguin? mediated decays, and the extraction of the CKM matrix elements Vub and Vcb from semileptonic decays, as well as more mundane results, are described in great detail by the experimentalists who have been closely involved with making the measurements. Theoretical progress in understanding b-quark decays using HQET and lattice gauge techniques are described by theorists who have developed and used these techniques.Synthesizing the experimental and theoretical information, several articles discuss the implications for the ?Standard Model? and how further tests can be done using measurements of CP violation in the B system.

Book The Physics of Neutrinos

Download or read book The Physics of Neutrinos written by Vernon Barger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of neutrinos--uncharged elementary particles that are key to helping us better understand the nature of our universe--is one of the most exciting frontiers of modern science. This book provides a comprehensive overview of neutrino physics today and explores promising new avenues of inquiry that could lead to future breakthroughs. The Physics of Neutrinos begins with a concise history of the field and a tutorial on the fundamental properties of neutrinos, and goes on to discuss how the three neutrino types interchange identities as they propagate from their sources to detectors. The book shows how studies of neutrinos produced by such phenomena as cosmic rays in the atmosphere and nuclear reactions in the solar interior provide striking evidence that neutrinos have mass, and it traces our astounding progress in deciphering the baffling experimental findings involving neutrinos. The discovery of neutrino mass offers the first indication of a new kind of physics that goes beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles, and this book considers the unanticipated patterns in the masses and mixings of neutrinos in the framework of proposed new theoretical models. The Physics of Neutrinos maps out the ambitious future facilities and experiments that will advance our knowledge of neutrinos, and explains why the way forward in solving the outstanding questions in neutrino science will require the collective efforts of particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and cosmology.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the edited versions of some selected lectures delivered at the famous "Schladming Winter School", devoted to "Flavor Physics" in the present case. Flavor physics is one of the hot topics in contemporary elementary particle physics, because it relates to fundamental questions like the origin of masses, the size and strength of CP violation and the oscillations between various neutrino species. This volume will be useful for graduate students wishing to get more acquainted with the field as well as for lecturers in search of material for seminars of special lectures and courses in quantum field theory.

Book Introduction to Particle and Astroparticle Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Particle and Astroparticle Physics written by Alessandro De Angelis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-05 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by researchers who had been professionals in accelerator physics before becoming leaders of groups in astroparticle physics, introduces both fields in a balanced and elementary way, requiring only a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics on the part of the reader. The new profile of scientists in fundamental physics ideally involves the merging of knowledge in astroparticle and particle physics, but the duration of modern experiments is such that people cannot simultaneously be practitioners in both. Introduction to Particle and Astroparticle Physics is designed to bridge the gap between the fields. It can be used as a self-training book, a consultation book, or a textbook providing a “modern” approach to particles and fundamental interactions.

Book Kaon Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan L. Rosner
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2001-01-15
  • ISBN : 9780226902289
  • Pages : 654 pages

Download or read book Kaon Physics written by Jonathan L. Rosner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2001-01-15 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, the first of what have come to be known as "strange particles" were detected. As the number and variety of these particles proliferated, physicists began to try to make sense of them. Some seemed to have masses about 900 times that of the electron, and existed in both charged and neutral varieties. These particles are now called kaons (or K mesons), and they have become the subject of some of the most exciting research in particle physics. Kaon Physics at the Turn of the Millennium presents cutting-edge papers by leading theorists and experimentalists that synthesize the current state of the field and suggest promising new directions for the future study of kaons. Topics covered include the history of kaon physics, direct CP violation in kaon decays, time reversal violation, CPT studies, theoretical aspects of kaon physics, rare kaon decays, hyperon physics, charm: CP violation and mixing, the physics of B mesons, and future opportunities for kaon physics in the twenty-first century.

Book Elementary Particle Physics

Download or read book Elementary Particle Physics written by John Iliopoulos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the development of natural philosophy in Ancient Greece, scientists have been concerned with determining the nature of matter's smallest constituents and the interactions among them. This textbook examines the question of the microscopic composition of matter through an accessible introduction to what is now called 'The Physics of Elementary Particles'. In the last few decades, elementary particle physics has undergone a period of transition, culminating in the formulation of a new theoretical scheme, known as 'The Standard Model', which has profoundly changed our understanding of nature's fundamental forces. Rooted in the experimental tradition, this new vision is based on geometry and sees the composition of matter in terms of its accordance with certain geometrical principles. This textbook presents and explains this modern viewpoint to a readership of well-motivated undergraduate students, by guiding the reader from the basics to the more advanced concepts of Gauge Symmetry, Quantum Field Theory and the phenomenon of spontaneous symmetry breaking through concrete physical examples. This engaging introduction to the theoretical advances and experimental discoveries of the last decades makes this fascinating subject accessible to undergraduate students and aims at motivating them to study it further.
