Book excerpt: Bayou Charlie is quite a character. He travels all over the state from Bossier City to Slidell to Lake Charles to Baton Rouge. No one ever knows when and where he will show up. He just does. He will listen to your stories and maybe tell you one of his. Bayou Charlie draws a crowd wherever he goes. People run to see him. Bayou Charlie will listen to any story from anyone who will tell it. The young and the old, the old man or woman that everyone thinks is crazy he will listen to what he/she has to say. You never know when a delightful story will be told, or what the source it came from. "Always listen to your elders." His grandma told him, and that is what he does. Bayou Charlie is all for having fun, if none is going on he just may go up and tell a few jokes. Bayou Charlie loves to make people laugh. Even if he has to sing a song off key. That's bayou Charlie, anything for a laugh. And the people love him. If he goes to the casino people will start winning, just because he is there. Bayou Charlie may appear at a night club and ask a girl for a dance and maybe even steal a kiss. (All in fun) Bayou Charlie would never hurt anyone. He usually wears bib overalls open toed shoes and a funny hat. Consider yourself Lucky if you ever run into him. You will not be disappointed. He may be at a bayou near you smiling and walking away.

Book Born on the Bayou

Download or read book Born on the Bayou written by Blaine Lourd and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of the modern classics The Tender Bar and The Liars’ Club, Blaine Lourd writes a powerful Gothic memoir set in the bayous and oil towns of 1970s Louisiana. In this rags-to-riches memoir of finding your way and becoming a man, Blaine Lourd renders his childhood in rural Louisiana with his larger-than-life father, Harvey “Puffer” Lourd, Jr., a charismatic salesman during the exploding 1980s awl bidness. From cleaning a duck to drinking a beer, Puffer guides Blaine through the twists and turns of growing up, ultimately pointing him to a poignant truth: sometimes those you love the most can inflict the most pain. Set against a lush landscape of magnolia trees and majestic old homes, haunted swamps and swimming holes filled with wildlife, Lourd gets to the heart of being a Southerner with rawness and grace, beautifully detailing what it means to have a place so ingrained in your being. Just as the timeless memoirs All Over but the Shoutin’ and The Liar’s Club evoke the muggy air of a Southern summer and barrels of steaming crawfish, so does Blaine’s contemporary exploration of what it means to find yourself among the bayous and back roads. Charting his journey from his rural home to working the star-studded streets of Los Angeles as a financial advisor to the rich and famous, Blaine’s story is about the complicated path to success and identity. With witty grace and candid prose, he pays homage to family bonds, unwavering loyalty, and deep roots that cannot be severed, no matter how hard you try.

Book Sidonie and the Loup Garou and Other Stories from the Bayou

Download or read book Sidonie and the Loup Garou and Other Stories from the Bayou written by Linda Hebert Todd and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short fiction in this book introduces the reader to an interesting assortment of characters. The lead story-Sidonie and the Loup-Garou-features a high school girl who learns it is a good idea to heed the warnings of her Cajun grandparents. The final tale-The Ghost and Sadie Stackpoole- solves the 200-year-old mystery of Jean LaFitte's buried treasure in southwest Louisiana. Sandwiched between these two tales are another ghost, a couple of voodoo dolls, and several women out to teach their men there's a limit to how much garbage they'll tolerate. A famous journalist returns to his hometown for a class reunion and faces down a painful episode from his past. A young wife discovers that sleeping on satin sheets is highly overrated. The story of Little Red Riding Hood takes on a Cajun twist when Ti-Rouge meets up with the kokodree-a big, bad alligator. For entertainment with a Cajun feel, spend a couple of nights with these and other characters in the pages of this collection.

Residents compete in egg pâquer contests to see who can crack their opponent's Easter egg first. Louisiana is a place where frequent collisions with natural disasters can inspire a drink like Pat O'Brien's famous hurricane. And the state's history is filled with colorful figures like Governor Earl K. Long, whose wife committed him to a mental institution--only for him to use his political pull to inspire his own release. Elsewhere these accounts may seem odd or farfetched, but it all happens in Louisiana. Join author Sam Irwin as he details these intriguing Pelican State stories with pithy observations, humorous asides and droll determinations.

Book excerpt: I wrote this book of short stories to share the background of my storytelling tradition and the whole village approach of rearing children, that was the custom during my childhood. Through "Daisy's Bayou Tales," I strived to recreate the loving, caring and respectful relationship that existed between parents, family members, neighbors, old and young people on the sunny island known as Morgan City, Louisiana. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

Book excerpt: A veteran music journalist explores rock-n-roll’s bayou roots in “a jolting 18-track joy ride [that] unlocks secrets and back-stories worth savoring” (The Wall Street Journal). The bayou of the American south—stretching from Houston, Texas, to Mobile, Alabama—is a world all its own, with a rich cultural heritage that has had an outsized influence on musicians across the globe. In this unique study of marsh music, Dave Thompson goes beyond the storied stomping grounds of New Orleans to discover secret legends and vivid mythology in the surrounding wilderness. In Bayou Underground, the people who have called the bayou home—such as Bob Dylan, Jerry Reed, Nick Cave, Bo Didley, a one-armed Cajun backwoodsman, and gator hunter named Amos Moses—are unearthed through their own words, their lives and music, and interviews with residents from the region. Included interviews with legendary musicians like Jerry Reed and Bo Didley, Bayou Underground is part travelogue, part social history, and part lament for a way of life that has now all but disappeared.

Book excerpt: A remarkable tale of greed, treachery and deceit in one of the most outlandish criminal stunts ever conceived: the theft of a nation In 1981, a small but heavily armed force of misfits from Canada and the United States set off on a preposterous mission: invade an impoverished Caribbean country, overthrow its government in a coup d'etat, install a puppet prime minister and transform the island into a crooks’ paradise. Their leader was a Texas soldier of fortune named Mike Perdue. His lieutenant was a Canadian Nazi named Wolfgang Droege. Their destination: Dominica. For two years, they recruited fighting men, wooed investors, stockpiled weapons and forged links with the mob, leftist revolutionaries and militant Rastafarians. They called their invasion Operation Red Dog, and they were going to make millions. All that stood in their way were two federal agents from New Orleans on the biggest case of their lives. Set in the Caribbean, Canada and the American South at the end of the Cold War, and based on hundreds of pages of declassified U.S. government documents, as well as exclusive interviews with those involved, Bayou of Pigs tells the true story of Canadian and American men who tried to steal a tropical paradise.

Book Tales from the Field

Download or read book Tales from the Field written by David R. Brown and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of the Field began as a chronicle of hunting memories amongst a group of friends that considered one day we would be too old to remember them if not captured for posterity. Putting those memories on paper brought to life the vivid sunrises and sunsets, the pungent smell of flooded timber, and wet dogs shaking off water after a great retrieve, as well as those days where nothing goes right. David Brown's first chance at publishing has filled this book with stories that may stir up memories of your days afield. It embodies many experiences, good and bad with friends, and that is what life is all about. From hunting in pit blinds, layouts or standing in oak bottoms for waterfowl, this book covers a myriad of adventure tales with a few special days of turkey hunting too. As we currently live in a time where our days are seemingly driven by technology, the hope is for you to take a reprieve from the chaos, find a comfortable chair and read about a time when moments in the woods and water surely bring a smile to your face and a feeling of peace in your soul.
