Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of growth patterns of longitudinal characteristics are vitally important to improve our understanding of the development course of diseases. In these studies, it is often of great interest to cluster individual trajectories based on repeated measurements collected over time. Non-linear growth trajectories are often seen in practice, and individual data can also be measured sparsely at irregular time points, which may complicate the modeling process. This thesis begins with proposing a shape invariant growth mixture model for better clustering growth trajectory data with these features (Chapter 3). In the proposed model, non-linear patterns are captured by cluster-specific cubic B-spline smoothing functions within a latent class mixed effect model framework, and random effects reflecting the size, timing and intensity of the individual growth trajectories are modeled within each cluster to account for variation that is not explained by latent classes. We also compare our model to the commonly used standard growth mixture model and functional clustering approach. To better understand the clinical implication of different growth patterns, interests are usually not limited to which individuals belong to which subgroup, but also what factors are associated with individuals' class membership. This information could help clinicians provide early intervention to prevent the development of abnormal trajectories and therefore the development of diseases. Despite its importance in facilitating medical findings, little work has been done in selecting the predictors related to class membership in the context of growth mixture models. Therefore, we aim to extend the shape invariant mixture model we proposed to a unified Bayesian growth mixture model to allow incorporating covariates. To achieve this objective, in Chapter 4 we first review the currently available Bayesian variable selection approaches and compare their performance in terms of variable selection and prediction. And in Chapter 5, we propose a unified growth mixture model allowing for simultaneously clustering growth trajectories and selecting important covariates that are associated with the class membership. Bayesian inference via Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm is implemented to estimate the parameters of interest. Results from analyzing real and simulated data are presented and discussed throughout this thesis.

The authors emphasize modeling ideas and inference methodologies, although some theoretical results for the justification of the proposed methods are presented. With its logical structure and organization, beginning with basic principles, the text develops the foundation needed to master advanced principles and applications. Following a brief overview, data examples from biomedical research studies are presented and point to the need for nonparametric regression analysis approaches. Next, the authors review mixed-effects models and nonparametric regression models, which are the two key building blocks of the proposed modeling techniques. The core section of the book consists of four chapters dedicated to the major nonparametric regression methods: local polynomial, regression spline, smoothing spline, and penalized spline. The next two chapters extend these modeling techniques to semiparametric and time varying coefficient models for longitudinal data analysis. The final chapter examines discrete longitudinal data modeling and analysis. Each chapter concludes with a summary that highlights key points and also provides bibliographic notes that point to additional sources for further study. Examples of data analysis from biomedical research are used to illustrate the methodologies contained throughout the book. Technical proofs are presented in separate appendices. With its focus on solving problems, this is an excellent textbook for upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in longitudinal data analysis. It is also recommended as a reference for biostatisticians and other theoretical and applied research statisticians with an interest in longitudinal data analysis. Not only do readers gain an understanding of the principles of various nonparametric regression methods, but they also gain a practical understanding of how to use the methods to tackle real-world problems.

At that time, criminology was a very limited activity, depending almost exclusively on the Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) initiated by the FBI in 1929 for measurement of crime based on victim reports to the police and on police arrests. Marvin Wolfgang and colleagues were makingan importantadvancebytrackinglongitudinaldata onarrestsin Philadelphia,an in- vation that was widely appreciated. And the ?eld was very small: I remember attending my ?rst meeting of the American Society of Criminology in about 1968 in an anteroom at New York University; there were about 25–30 people in attendance, mostly sociologists with a few lawyers thrown in. That Society today has over 3,000 members, mostly now drawn from criminology which has established its own clear identity, but augmented by a wide variety of disciplines that include statisticians, economists, demographers, and even a few engineers. This Handbook provides a remarkable testimony to the growth of that ?eld. Following the maxim that “if you can’t measure it, you can’t understand it,” we have seen the early dissatisfaction with the UCR replaced by a wide variety of new approaches to measuring crime victimization and offending.

In the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN), we are interested in identifying trending groups based on repeated hormone observations, and in the association between hormone trends and women's health during menopause. we proposed a Bayesian semi-parametric model with a Dirichlet Process (DP) that allows for irregular data and model-based clustering of women based on their hormone profiles. We identified distinct developmental trajectories for both E2 and FSH hormones, and discussed relationships between profiles and other factors. Urinary Incontinence (UI) is considered as a specific measure of women's health, and we extended our approach to jointly model UI and hormone outcomes in order to explore the association between UI status and the pattern of hormone changes over the menopausal transition. In the study of Johne's disease in cattle, we developed a particular finite mixture model for diagnosis based on bivariate longitudinal outcomes. The subjects were clustered into three disease phases: uninfected and two categories of disease. In addition, we discussed Label Switching issues in Bayesian finite and infinite mixture models, and proposed an ad-hoc method to address them to obtain inferences for the parameters on the component level.
