Book Modernizing Bavaria

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Milosch
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2006-03-01
  • ISBN : 1789206049

Download or read book Modernizing Bavaria written by Mark Milosch and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1949 Bavaria was not only the largest and best known but also the poorest, most agricultural, and most industrially backward region of Germany. It was further its most politically conservative region. The largest political party in Bavaria was the Christian Social Union (CSU), an extremely conservative, even reactionary, regional party. In the ensuing twenty years, the leaders of the CSU's small liberal wing (in particular Franz Josef Strauss, long-time party chair and the most colorful and polarizing politician in postwar Germany) broke with the anti-industrial traditions of Bavarian Catholic politics and made themselves useful to industry. With tactical brilliance the politicians pursued their individual political ambitions, rather than a coherent modernization strategy, which, by 1969, had turned Bavaria into a prosperous Land, the center of Germany's new aerospace, defense, and energy industries, with a disproportionate share of its research institutes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guidebook detailing walks in Germany's Bavarian Alps. Lying along the German-Austrian border in a thin sliver of land roughly 300km long, this area contains some of the most spectacular walking and beautiful scenery that Germany has to offer. 70 graded walks explore mountain landscapes, wild mountain gorges and alpine meadows as well as the region's picturesque villages, opulent baroque churches and fairy-tale castles like Neuschwanstein. There is also the northernmost glacier in the Alps (Blaueis), Germany's largest ice cave (Schellenberg) and its highest mountain, the Zugspitze, all visited on walks described in this guide. The walks are divided into six mountain areas, grouped around base towns to make planning a walking holiday as easy as possible. Bases include Oberstdorf, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, Marquartstein, Inzell, Oberammergau and Ramsau among others. The walks are mainly between 3 and 8 hours in duration, though some longer walks are included staying at mountain huts. The guidebook gives an outline of two multi-day tours and suggestions for shorter valley walks of less than 3hrs are also included. The Bavarian Alps make an ideal destination for an easy-to-organise and affordable walking holiday.

Book Shadows and Joys of a Life in Bavaria

Download or read book Shadows and Joys of a Life in Bavaria written by Gerlinde Pyron and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in rural Bavaria, Gerlinde didn’t know about Hitler’s regime in the way Americans learn about it in school. All she knew was the beauty and tragedy of daily life on the farm where she lived with her brother and sister, her mother, and her stepfather—she never knew her father, who was killed in the Siege of Leningrad. Experience country life in Germany in the 1940s and 1950s, through the eyes of an observant, imaginative child who watched as defeated German soldiers and their families tried to reinvent their lives after the war. From elaborate childhood games to the sobering reality of exhausting daily work, from the love and care of friends and neighbors to the heartbreak of a traumatized family, this compelling memoir is a testimony to the courage and grit of a girl who eventually came to America, fulfilling her own great-grandmother’s dream.

Book Bavaria and German Federalism

Download or read book Bavaria and German Federalism written by D. Dorondo and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-06-12 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bavaria and German Federalism details the struggle by successive Bavarian political parties of the pre- and post-Nazi period to shape the construction of the German state in a decentralized fashion. While the Bavarian Peoples Party ultimately failed to redraw the Weimar constitution to satisfy Bavarian particularist desires, the Christian Social Union assumed the federalist mantle after 1945 and largely succeeded in helping shape western Germany into a workable federal state.
