Eighteen-year-old Tatie is a dreamer girl from post-communist Slovenia who has one goal in mind: escape the uncreative environment that surrounds her and become a badass Hollywood screenwriter. To get inspiration for her action-packed story, she goes on a student exchange program to Hong Kong and soon finds herself in a series of madcap adventures. When Walt, an ambitious Texan grooming himself to be the next U.S. President, takes interest in her, she's not sure of his sincerity. Especially because he seems to have more in common with her rival, Vivian, who already behaves and dresses as if she were the next Secretary of State. From failed romantic dates to a disastrous babysitting job, Tatie must regain her focus on what she really came to Hong Kong for. She finds comfort in Charlie, the brother she never had and a retired MMA fighter with excellent knowledge of martial arts, who inspires her to follow her passion and offers to write the fight scenes for her screenplay. But her heart has other plans. When she finds out that Walt and Vivian are flying to Beijing the same weekend, she follows them. Juggling her studies and a quirky romance, will she be able to finish her masterpiece before the semester is over? Book Chinese Women s Cinema

Download or read book Chinese Women s Cinema written by Lingzhen Wang and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of its kind in English, this collection explores twenty one well established and lesser known female filmmakers from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the Chinese diaspora. Sixteen scholars illuminate these filmmakers' negotiations of local and global politics, cinematic representation, and issues of gender and sexuality, covering works from the 1920s to the present. Writing from the disciplines of Asian, women's, film, and auteur studies, contributors reclaim the work of Esther Eng, Tang Shu Shuen, Dong Kena, and Sylvia Chang, among others, who have transformed Chinese cinematic modernity. Chinese Women's Cinema is a unique, transcultural, interdisciplinary conversation on authorship, feminist cinema, transnational gender, and cinematic agency and representation. Lingzhen Wang's comprehensive introduction recounts the history and limitations of established feminist film theory, particularly its relationship with female cinematic authorship and agency. She also reviews critiques of classical feminist film theory, along with recent developments in feminist practice, altogether remapping feminist film discourse within transnational and interdisciplinary contexts. Wang's subsequent redefinition of women's cinema, and brief history of women's cinematic practices in modern China, encourage the reader to reposition gender and cinema within a transnational feminist configuration, such that power and knowledge are reexamined among and across cultures and nation-states.

Book Another World Lies Beyond

Download or read book Another World Lies Beyond written by T. June Li and published by Huntington Library Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Lake of Reflected Fragrance to the Pavilion for Washing Away Thoughts to the Isle of Alighting Geese, this gorgeously illustrated volume explores the Huntington's Chinese Garden—Liu Fang Yuan, or the Garden of Flowing Fragrance—one of the largest such gardens outside China. With the first phase of construction completed, the garden opened to visitors in early 2008. It resembles those created in seventeenth-century Suzhou, offering awe-inspiring views and architecture and evoking an era when scholars sought quiet, intimate gardens in which to retreat, write poetry, and practice calligraphy, among many other pursuits. The contributors to Another World Lies Beyond discuss the challenges of constructing the garden in Southern California as well as the cultural traditions and aesthetics of Chinese garden design, especially the ways in which the plants and structures engage the imagination of visitors. Inscribed poetic couplets, literary allusions, botanical motifs, and evocative names for structures reveal layers of symbolism for exploration and interpretation. The volume's final essay describes how plants that originated in China—such as the chrysanthemum, the plum, and the camellia—have shaped that country's ancient botanical heritage and have enriched the gardens of both East and West.

Book Anthocyanins

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin Gould
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-12-19
  • ISBN : 0387773355
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Anthocyanins written by Kevin Gould and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an unprecedented expansion of knowledge about anthocyanins pigments. Indeed, the molecular genetic control of anthocyanins biosynthesis is now one of the best understood of all secondary metabolic pathways. There have also been substantial improvements in analytical technology that have led to the discovery of novel anthocyanin compounds. Armed with this knowledge and the tools for genetic engineering, plant breeders are now introducing vibrant new colors into horticultural crops. The food industry has also benefited from the resurgence of interest in anthocyanins. A greater understanding of the chemistry of these pigments has led to improved methods for stabilizing the color of anthocyanins extracts, so that they are more useful as food colorings. Methods for the bulk production of anthocyanins from cell cultures have been optimized for this purpose. Possible benefits to human health from the ingestion of anthocyanin-rich foods have also been a major feature of the recent scientific literature. Anthocyanins are remarkably potent antioxidants, and their ingestion has been postulated to stave off the effects of oxidative stress. These pigments, especially in conjunction with other flavonoids, have been associated with reductions in the incidence and severity of many other non-infectious diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain cancers. An industry is developing around anthocyanins as nutritional supplements. Finally, there has been significant progress in our understanding of the benefits of anthocyanins to plants themselves. Originally considered an extravagance without a purpose, anthocyanins are now implicated in multifarious vital functions. These include the attraction of pollinators and frugivores, aposematic defense from herbivores, and protection from environmental stressors such as strong light, UVB, drought, and free radical attacks. Anthocyanins are evidently highly versatile, and enormously useful to plants. This book covers all aspects of the biosynthesis and function of anthocyanins (and related compounds such as proanthocyanidins) in plants, and their applications in agriculture, food products, and human health. Featured areas include their relevance to: * Plant stress * Flower and fruit color * Human health * Wine quality and health attributes * Food colorants and ingredients * Cell culture production systems * The pastoral sector

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A fascinating look at how consumers perceive logos, ads, commercials, brands, and products.”—Time How much do we know about why we buy? What truly influences our decisions in today’s message-cluttered world? In Buyology, Martin Lindstrom presents the astonishing findings from his groundbreaking three-year, seven-million-dollar neuromarketing study—a cutting-edge experiment that peered inside the brains of 2,000 volunteers from all around the world as they encountered various ads, logos, commercials, brands, and products. His startling results shatter much of what we have long believed about what captures our interest—and drives us to buy. Among the questions he explores: • Does sex actually sell? • Does subliminal advertising still surround us? • Can “cool” brands trigger our mating instincts? • Can our other senses—smell, touch, and sound—be aroused when we see a product? Buyology is a fascinating and shocking journey into the mind of today's consumer that will captivate anyone who's been seduced—or turned off—by marketers' relentless attempts to win our loyalty, our money, and our minds.

Book Anthocyanins in Leaves

Download or read book Anthocyanins in Leaves written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2002-12-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthocyanins are the pigments in leaves and fruits that give them their colour; for example, the red colour of strawberries, or red leaves in autumn. Although these pigments are especially prominent in the autumn foliage of deciduous trees and in the growth flushes of tropical rainforest plants, they are also found in the leaves of many species after exposure to environmental or biotic stresses. Although the control of anthocyanin synthesis in vegetative organs has long been studied, and is a model system in plant molecular genetics, potential functions of these pigments in leaves have been largely ignored. This volume pulls together new information from experts in the fields of genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, physiological ecology and plant development, providing a platform to discuss putative hypotheses for anthocyanin function in these vegetative organs.
