Book excerpt: John Marshall, (1859-1908) was an adventurer, journalist, public figure and Digger's leader on the Coolgardie-Kalgoorlie gold field who wrote of the early days on West Australia's gold fields in "Battling For Gold." This 1903 book has remained the greatest collection of Australian gold rush stories ever written and it recounts with vivid detail McCann's nugget, the great Coolgardie fire, the Londonderry golden hole, the gold field's rioting, dangers, disease, death, and of course gold, gold, and more gold! Regarding the quest for gold, Marshall writes: "I sometimes start at night and wake up with a pang to think that the beautiful dream in which I have been indulging is only a dream; that I have been living in a fool's paradise, and the following morning shall see me out again on the 'wallaby,' with my swag on my back, ever on the weary quest for gold. But when I am fully awake and feel the eider down quilts on my couch, and see the evidences of wealth and luxury on every hand, the old, hopeless feeling, so well known in former days, gives place to one of exultation, and I realise that the old life has passed away, and a new and better life been opened to me." These stirring pages of gold field battles will continue to live on forever in Australian history. Book excerpt: A revision of Norma King's popular Colourful Tales of the Western Australian Goldfields (1980) by Lorraine Kelly. The stories in this book relate to Western Australia's most fascinating chapter of history - that of the frenzied excitement of the early gold-rush days. The pursuit of gold with its promise of untold wealth yoked the most unlikely characters together, from the desperate unemployed loner to the titled English speculator. It was a precarious existence, and a home was a transitory affair for most families, moving from one town to another as the gold was worked out or as rumour directed. The incredible feats of the goldfields cyclists, carrying news to the remotest of areas, the part played by camels in opening up the outback, the unique Loopline railway, dangerous gold-rushes, the law of the digger in 'roll-ups' and the threat of death from the harsh environment are told to form a complete and intriguing portrait of life on the goldfields. The fortunes of towns, mines and individuals from boom time to depression are traced with telling accuracy and detail by writers whose lives were interwoven with the story of Western Australia's goldfields.

Book Horatio Bottomley and the Far Right Before Fascism

Download or read book Horatio Bottomley and the Far Right Before Fascism written by David Renton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horatio Bottomley and the Far Right Before Fascism examines Bottomley’s life and politics, and what made him one of the great figures of Edwardian life. During the first World War, his magazine John Bull sold two million copies a week. Bottomley addressed huge crowds urging them to wage a way of extermination against ordinary Germans. The first chairman of the Financial Times, the inspiration for Toad in The Wind in the Willows, Bottomley was also a major figure in post-1918 politics, urging Conservative voters to dump their leaders and try something new. This carefully researched biography, the first new life of Bottomley for 50 years, shows how he began on the centre-left of Edwardian politics and then moved to the margins, becoming a leading figure on the Edwardian far right, and pre-empting the non-fascist far right of our own days. This book will appeal to scholars and students with interests in political history, fascism and the far right.

It tells of Aboriginal history, of people who have ‘always been here, and we always will be here’. Women’s and children’s lives are explored as well as those of prospectors and miners, the settlement of ‘Afghans’ and the story of pastoralism.
