Book excerpt: American Astronaut, Hayden Bakley, is an experienced space explorer. As many times as he had been into space, he did not know a quiet, yet, potentially life-altering war for the spheres is taking place all over the world. What if a country, group, or individual seized complete command and control of every orbiter encircling the globe, including space stations? The Outer Space Treaty provides a framework for preventing such seizures, but what if those principles were now thought of as being outdated? That the spheres around the Earth were no different from the land, there to be conquered and controlled. Hayden is drafted into the war for the spheres through no doing of his own. It is up to him and an under-the-radar NASA group to stop such a monopoly from being achieved. For whoever controls the spheres, controls Earth below and space beyond.

Book Spheres of Influence in International Relations

Download or read book Spheres of Influence in International Relations written by Susanna Hast and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current events happening around the world, especially the ’humanitarian interventions’ by NATO and the West within the context of the so-called Arab Spring, make the understanding of the role of spheres of influence in international politics absolutely critical. Hast explores the practical implications and applications of this theory, challenging the concept by using historical examples such as suzerainty and colonialism, as well as the emergence of a hierarchical international order. This study further connects the English School tradition, post-war international order, the Cold War and images of Russia with the concept of the sphere of influence to initiate debate and provide a fresh outlook on a concept which has little recent attention.

Book Separate Spheres No More

Download or read book Separate Spheres No More written by Monika Elbert and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the intersection of male and female spheres in American literature Although they wrote in the same historical milieu as their male counterparts, women writers of the 19th- and early 20th-centuries have generally been "ghettoized" by critics into a separate canonical sphere. These original essays argue in favor of reconciling male and female writers, both historically and in the context of classroom teaching. While some of the essays pair up female and male authors who write in a similar style or with similar concerns, others address social issues shared by both men and women, including class tensions, economic problems, and the Civil War experience. Rather than privileging particular genres or certain well-known writers, the contributors examine writings ranging from novels and poetry to autobiography, utopian fiction, and essays. And they consider familiar figures like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emily Dickinson, and Ralph Waldo Emerson alongside such lesser-known writers as Melusina Fay Peirce, Susie King Taylor, and Mary Gove Nichols. Each essay revises the binary notions that have been ascribed to males and females, such as public and private, rational and intuitive, political and domestic, violent and passive. Although they do not deny the existence of separate spheres, the contributors show the boundary between them to be much more blurred than has been assumed until now.

Book The Social Labs Revolution

Download or read book The Social Labs Revolution written by Zaid Hassan and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current responses to our most pressing societal challenges—from poverty to ethnic conflict to climate change—are not working. These problems are incredibly dynamic and complex, involving an ever-shifting array of factors, actors, and circumstances. They demand a highly fluid and adaptive approach, yet we address them by devising fixed, long-term plans. Social labs, says Zaid Hassan, are a dramatically more effective response. Social labs bring together a diverse a group of stakeholders—not to create yet another five-year plan but to develop a portfolio of prototype solutions, test those solutions in the real world, use the data to further refine them, and test them again. Hassan builds on a decade of experience—as well as drawing from cutting-edge research in complexity science, networking theory, and sociology—to explain the core principles and daily functioning of social labs, using examples of pioneering labs from around the world. He offers a new generation of problem solvers an effective, practical, and exciting new vision and guide.

Book Framing TTIP in the European Public Spheres

Download or read book Framing TTIP in the European Public Spheres written by Alvaro Oleart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the debate and politicisation of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations in the Spanish, French and British public spheres. It addresses the questions of how and to what extent the national media discourses about TTIP were Europeanised, and how this type ofEuropeanisation contributes to the democratic legitimacy of the EU. The author argues that the politicisation of TTIP should be seen as a symptom of the ‘normal’ politics of a democratic polity, as it enlarges the political arena by embedding European issues into national political debates. Demands for ‘Another Europe is Possible’ empower rather than hinder the legitimacy of the EU.
