Book The Battle of Benevento According to Andrew of Hungary and Saba Malaspina

Download or read book The Battle of Benevento According to Andrew of Hungary and Saba Malaspina written by Louis Mendola and published by Sicilian Medieval Studies. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of several original Latin texts describing the Battle of Benevento of 1266 that led to the demise of the Hohenstaufen dynasty and the rise of the House of Anjou in Italy. Deciding the fate not only of Italy but of Catholic Europe, and especially what are now Germany, Austria and Switzerland, this signal event resulted in the victory of Guelphs over Ghibellines and the rise of Papal influence. Henceforth, the culture of Tuscany and Umbria, expressed in the works of Dante and Boccaccio, came to dominate what came to be identified as Italian culture. The only surviving codex of Andrew's account is a manuscript in Paris. In addition to that text and the excerpt from Saba Malaspina's chronicle, the book includes a translation of the Invective of Peter of Pretio addressed to Charles of Anjou, King of Naples, in 1269 following the execution of Conradin Hohenstaufen after the Battle of Tagliacozzo. This volume is a useful source work. Included are numerous maps and genealogical tables, along with a timeline and supplementary information. This book complements the Jamsilla Chronicle translated by the same author.

Download or read book The Medieval Crossbow written by Stuart Ellis-Gorman and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth, illustrated history and technical study of this iconic weapon of the Middle Ages. The crossbow is an iconic weapon of the Middle Ages and, alongside the longbow, one of the most effective ranged weapons of the pre-gunpowder era. Unfortunately, despite its general fame it has been decades since an in-depth history of the medieval crossbow has been published, which is why Stuart Ellis-Gorman’s detailed, accessible, and highly illustrated study is so valuable. The Medieval Crossbow approaches the history of the crossbow from two directions. The first is a technical study of the design and construction of the medieval crossbow, the many different kinds of crossbows used during the Middle Ages, and finally a consideration of the relationship between crossbows and art. The second half of the book explores the history of the crossbow, from its origins in ancient China to its decline in sixteenth-century Europe. Along the way it explores the challenges in deciphering the crossbow’s early medieval history as well as its prominence in warfare and sport shooting in the High and Later Middle Ages. This fascinating book brings together the work of a wide range of accomplished crossbow scholars and incorporates the author’s own original research to create an account of the medieval crossbow that will appeal to anyone looking to gain an insight into one of the most important weapons of the Middle Ages.

Book Curiosity

  • Author : Alberto Manguel
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2015-01-01
  • ISBN : 0300184786
  • Pages : 388 pages

Download or read book Curiosity written by Alberto Manguel and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eclectic history of human curiosity, a great feast of ideas, and a memoir of a reading life from an internationally celebrated reader and thinker Curiosity has been seen through the ages as the impulse that drives our knowledge forward and the temptation that leads us toward dangerous and forbidden waters. The question "Why?" has appeared under a multiplicity of guises and in vastly different contexts throughout the chapters of human history. Why does evil exist? What is beauty? How does language inform us? What defines our identity? What is our responsibility to the world? In Alberto Manguel's most personal book to date, the author tracks his own life of curiosity through the reading that has mapped his way. Manguel chooses as his guides a selection of writers who sparked his imagination. He dedicates each chapter to a single thinker, scientist, artist, or other figure who demonstrated in a fresh way how to ask "Why?" Leading us through a full gallery of inquisitives, among them Thomas Aquinas, David Hume, Lewis Carroll, Rachel Carson, Socrates, and, most importantly, Dante, Manguel affirms how deeply connected our curiosity is to the readings that most astonish us, and how essential to the soaring of our own imaginations.

Book The Templars and their Sources

Download or read book The Templars and their Sources written by Karl Borchardt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even 700 years after the suppression of the Order of the Temple and the execution of the last grandmaster, Jacques de Molay, there is no shortage of publications on this influential military order. Yet unlike other medieval institutions the Templars are subject to speculative fiction and popular myth which threaten to swamp the fruits of scholarly endeavour. Fortunately, recent years have produced a thriving academic scholarship which is challenging these myths. More and more sources are currently being edited, particularly those for the trial of the Templars (1307–1312). Others are still awaiting indepth study, among them, surprisingly, the greater part of the charters that cover more than 150 years of the Order’s history. The papers in this volume step into this gap and critically evaluate new directions in Templar studies on the basis of as-yet unedited source material. Open issues and desiderata regarding the sources are discussed and from a range of inspiring results a new status quaestionis is proposed that will not only provide a better understanding of the Order’s archaeological, economical, religious, administrative and military history, but also set new points of departure for the editing of charters and administrative documents. The papers here are grouped into six sections, focusing on the headquarters of the Order, its charters, manpower and finance, religious life and finally the suppression and the Order’s afterlife.

Book Falcon Fever

Download or read book Falcon Fever written by Tim Gallagher and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2008 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A boy, a medieval emperor, and an obsession that wouldn't quit. What is so compelling about falconry? To find an answer, Tim Gallagher mines his lifelong obsession with falcons in this engaging volume, interweaving memoir, history, and travelogue. An entire subculture exists outside the mainstream of American society consisting of obsessed individuals (Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and film writer Tony Huston among them) who still use the ancient training techniques and language of falconry. Gallagher finds that his personal story connects on many levels with that of Frederick II, the thirteenth-century Holy Roman Emperor, legendary falconer, and notorious freethinker, who brought the full wrath of the medieval Church down upon his dynasty. While following Frederick's footsteps through southern Italy, Gallagher ponders his personal history as well. What salve to his spirit did falconry provide when it ignited his passion at age twelve? Beset by a turbulent childhood dominated by a brutal and violent father, Gallagher turned to this sport for emotional release. He offers us a unique glimpse into contemporary falconry, and the result is a surprisingly frank and revealing personal story.
