This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A DARK FANTASY ADVENTURE BEGINS . . . When Cassandra Delamare, a young woman capable of giving birth to a wizard, is taken during the night by those working for an evil tyrant, a rescue attempt begins. But as Cassandra, the so-called wizard bearer, is taken further from home, a deeper plot unfolds, connecting people from across the land of Elt. From magical wizards to a long-forgotten witch, warring kings to a common whore, a despairing queen to a lowly servant girl, the ripples of the wizard bearer's taking are felt far and wide. Hutchinson has woven local interest into this tale by naming all of the places on the map of Elt after real villages and locations in the Yorkshire Wolds, England, close to his birthplace of Kingston upon Hull. “A sprawling dark fantasy adventure set in a richly built land on the cusp of a brutal war.” “Move over the Mother of Dragons and make way for the Mother of Wizards.”

Book excerpt: John Shawcross, a man in his sixties who has recently been given the devastating news that he has cancer, falls down a hidden crevice in the woods, sustaining crippling injuries. There he lies waiting for a rescue he fears will never come. But the fall and the cancer that grows within him are only small fractions of his life’s sad, but often heart-warming, story. In 1959, when John is just ten years old, he witnesses his best friend being struck and killed by a steam train on the local railway line. As time goes by, and he grows from a boy into a man, the railway’s mysterious and sinister origins are revealed. Through love lost and found, and tragedy and joy, John discovers secrets, some from beyond the grave, that have profound consequences on his entire life. A childhood in the 1950s; a coming-of-age in the 1960s; a crime mystery in the 1970s; and a supernatural tale that binds it all together. Are you ready to take the journey? “Ask any Hutchinson-reader which is their favourite novel by the author and they will more often than not choose this one. Genre-wise, it’s a novel that is hard to pigeonhole. It’s chilling yet heartwarming. It has horror and yet it has joy. When stripped to its bare bones, it’s the story of one man’s life, filled with equal measures of tragedy and joy.” “They say finishing a good novel is like saying goodbye to a dear friend. This is one of those books.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Halloween night, five young people are standing before a strange old building. It’s the epitome of a haunted house. It’s nestled between trees that arch towards it with branches like spindly fingers. It looks uninviting. It looks . . . evil. But that’s just fine. It’s what they wanted. It’s why they answered the advert — the one offering thrill-seekers the chance to spend All Hallows’ Eve in a haunted house. But there’s no reason for them to be scared, right? It’s all pretence, like a cheap fairground ghost train ride. Well, the Devil is in the detail, or so they say. Come inside . . . if you dare. “Aside from this being a solid horror read, fans of Hutchinson’s short stories will find their thirst well and truly quenched as in the frame of this dark tale are woven six shorts in the same vein as the author’s much-read Be Careful What You Wish For. A unique novel, darker than anything Hutchinson has published previously.”

Book Caciques and Cemi Idols

  • Author : José R. Oliver
  • Publisher : University of Alabama Press
  • Release : 2009-05-10
  • ISBN : 0817355154
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Caciques and Cemi Idols written by José R. Oliver and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2009-05-10 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Takes a close look at the relationship between humans and other (non-human) beings that are imbued with cemí power, specifically within the Taíno inter-island cultural sphere encompassing Puerto Rico and Hispaniola Cemís are both portable artifacts and embodiments of persons or spirit, which the Taínos and other natives of the Greater Antilles (ca. AD 1000-1550) regarded as numinous beings with supernatural or magic powers. This volume takes a close look at the relationship between humans and other (non-human) beings that are imbued with cemí power, specifically within the Taíno inter-island cultural sphere encompassing Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. The relationships address the important questions of identity and personhood of the cemí icons and their human “owners” and the implications of cemí gift-giving and gift-taking that sustains a complex web of relationships between caciques (chiefs) of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola. Oliver provides a careful analysis of the four major forms of cemís—three-pointed stones, large stone heads, stone collars, and elbow stones—as well as face masks, which provide an interesting contrast to the stone heads. He finds evidence for his interpretation of human and cemí interactions from a critical review of 16th-century Spanish ethnohistoric documents, especially the Relación Acerca de las Antigüedades de los Indios written by Friar Ramón Pané in 1497–1498 under orders from Christopher Columbus. Buttressed by examples of native resistance and syncretism, the volume discusses the iconoclastic conflicts and the relationship between the icons and the human beings. Focusing on this and on the various contexts in which the relationships were enacted, Oliver reveals how the cemís were central to the exercise of native political power. Such cemís were considered a direct threat to the hegemony of the Spanish conquerors, as these potent objects were seen as allies in the native resistance to the onslaught of Christendom with its icons of saints and virgins.

Book Discourse in Content and Language Integrated Learning CLIL Classrooms

Download or read book Discourse in Content and Language Integrated Learning CLIL Classrooms written by Christiane Dalton-Puffer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The label CLIL stands for classrooms where a foreign language (English) is used as a medium of instruction in content subjects. This book provides a first in-depth analysis of the kind of communicative abilities which are embodied in such CLIL classrooms. It examines teacher and student talk at secondary school level from different discourse-analytic angles, taking into account the interpersonal pragmatics of classroom discourse and how school subjects are talked into being during lessons. The analysis shows how CLIL classroom interaction is strongly shaped by its institutional context, which in turn conditions the ways in which students experience, use and learn the target language. The research presented here suggests that CLIL programmes require more explicit language learning goals in order to fully exploit their potential for furthering the learners’ appropriation of a foreign language as a medium of learning.

Book A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans

Download or read book A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans written by Jakob von Uexküll and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2013-11-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Is the tick a machine or a machine operator? Is it a mere object or a subject?” With these questions, the pioneering biophilosopher Jakob von Uexküll embarks on a remarkable exploration of the unique social and physical environments that individual animal species, as well as individuals within species, build and inhabit. This concept of the umwelt has become enormously important within posthumanist philosophy, influencing such figures as Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Deleuze and Guattari, and, most recently, Giorgio Agamben, who has called Uexküll “a high point of modern antihumanism.” A key document in the genealogy of posthumanist thought, A Foray into the Worlds of Animals and Humans advances Uexküll’s revolutionary belief that nonhuman perceptions must be accounted for in any biology worth its name; it also contains his arguments against natural selection as an adequate explanation for the present orientation of a species’ morphology and behavior. A Theory of Meaning extends his thinking on the umwelt, while also identifying an overarching and perceptible unity in nature. Those coming to Uexküll’s work for the first time will find that his concept of the umwelt holds new possibilities for the terms of animality, life, and the framework of biopolitics.
