Book excerpt: Although bats are often thought of as cave dwellers, many species depend on forests for all or part of the year. Of the 45 species of bats in North America, more than half depend on forests, using the bark of trees, tree cavities, or canopy foliage as roosting sites. Over the past two decades it has become increasingly clear that bat conservation and management are strongly linked to the health of forests within their range. Initially driven by concern for endangered species—the Indiana bat, for example—forest ecologists, timber managers, government agencies, and conservation organizations have been altering management plans and silvicultural practices to better accommodate bat species. Bats in Forests presents the work of a variety of experts who address many aspects of the ecology and conservation of bats. The chapter authors describe bat behavior, including the selection of roosts, foraging patterns, and seasonal migration as they relate to forests. They also discuss forest management and its influence on bat habitat. Both public lands and privately owned forests are considered, as well as techniques for monitoring bat populations and activity. The important role bats play in the ecology of forests—from control of insects to nutrient recycling—is revealed by a number of authors. Bat ecologists, bat conservationists, forest ecologists, and forest managers will find in this book an indispensable synthesis of the topics that concern them.

Book Seasonal Distribution of Vespertilionid Bats Along the Lake Michigan

Download or read book Seasonal Distribution of Vespertilionid Bats Along the Lake Michigan written by Jessica L. Kempke and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wisconsin/Lake Michigan coast is a significant flyway for migrating bird species, and may be just as important for migrating bats. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution and phenology of migrant and resident bat species in the vicinity of Lake Michigan and Green Bay in northeastern Wisconsin. Paired ultrasound detectors (Wildlife Acoustics’ SM2+ acoustic/ultrasonic detector) were placed at eighteen locations at public natural areas and nearby privately-owned lands. The digital recording devices monitored bat calls continuously during a 7 month period from April to October 2013, yielding 463,756 discrete bat detections or passes. Bat ultrasound recordings were compared with reference sonograms to identify species and to quantify levels of bat activity at each locality. Placement of detectors was designed to compare numbers of bats near the shoreline with comparable data from a second detector located 3-5 kilometers inland. Results showed that significantly higher levels of bat activity occurred at the shoreline locations than at inland locations for all groups of bats, as well as for total numbers of individuals and species richness. This pattern was especially pronounced during summer, when numbers of bat passes were highest. The recorded seasonal pattern of bat activity implies that migrant bats do not inflate numbers of local bats during spring and fall, unlike the pattern in migratory birds where large numbers of individuals pass through the region during migration periods. Higher numbers of bats at coastal locations during all seasons underscore the importance of Great Lakes shoreline regions for conservation of habitat for both resident and migratory bats.

Download or read book 50 Years of Bat Research written by Burton K. Lim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-23 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 1,400 species, bats are an incredibly diverse and successful group of mammals that can serve as model systems for many unique evolutionary adaptations. Flight has allowed them to master the sky, while echolocation enables them to navigate in the dark. Being small, secretive, nocturnal creatures has made bats a challenge to study, but over the past 50 years, innovative research has made it possible to dispel some of the mystery and myth surrounding them to give us a better understanding of the role these animals play in the ecosystem. The structure of the book is based on several broad themes across the biological sciences, including the evolution of bats, their ecology and behavior, and conservation of biodiversity. Within these themes are more specific topics on important aspects of bat research, such as morphology, molecular biology, echolocation, taxonomy, systematics, threats to bats, social structure, reproduction, movements, and feeding strategies. Given its scope, the book will appeal to the wider scientific community, environmental organizations, and government policymakers who are interested in the interdisciplinary aspects of biology and nature.
