Book excerpt: In the early days 20th century the emerging medium of comics was beginning to grab the attention of children and adults alike. Then, in the 1930s, superheroes revolutionised the entire industry and culture as we know it. Gotham’s caped crusader, The Batman, swung into this pantheon of demi-gods in 1939 and secured his place as one of the world’s most beloved characters. But do know who created The Dark Knight? Do you know how artist Bob Kane, placed himself at the secret origins of Batman while his co-creator Bill Finger was forced into the shadows? Do you know how comic creators, journalists, and family members fought to have Finger credited for his work? The first prose book to focus both on Finger and Kane, as well as cast of supporting characters from one of the most exciting times in comic book history, The Creators of Batman: Bob, Bill and The Dark Knight gathers everything we know about these two monumental figures and lays their stories side by side. Bringing together the story of these two creators against the exciting background of the American comic’s boom and Batman’s Golden Age. It looks at how Finger and Kane constructed the world of Gotham and its denizens, and grapples with the legacy the creators left behind.

Book The Many Lives of the Batman

Download or read book The Many Lives of the Batman written by Roberta Pearson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, The Many Lives of the Batman is a serious academic exploration of the cultural phenomenon called Batman. Marketing savvy alone did not build the Batman’s extraordinary success; it encompasses a variety of audiences who have embraced the hero through a collage of different media manifestations during his long history. Batman’s overlapping lives are illuminated in this critical anthology, which analyses the contexts of the character’s production and reception across a wide spectrum of time and media forms. This volume includes interviews with the character’s original creators. The other essays consider such questions as the political economy of comic book and film production processes; the cult status of the sixty’s television series in various fan communities; and the postmodernism of past and present Batman films. Using the tools of cultural studies, the book unmasks the Caped Crusader’s mysterious attraction.

Book Soul of the Dark Knight

Download or read book Soul of the Dark Knight written by Alex M. Wainer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the comics genre and language, how these were used to create Batman, and how that character's longevity is largely due to the medium's unique formal qualities. It argues that Batman's core appeal is his mythic nature which allows him to transcend changes in reader tastes, the vicissitudes of the comics industry, and the changing media landscape. While including some historical elements, it is mostly a study of how the formal aspects of comics are able to evoke uniquely mythic qualities that have made Batman such a long-lived cultural phenomenon and how efforts to adapt these qualities into other media, particularly live-action feature films, have succeeded or failed based on the strategies employed. The book sheds light both on comics as a medium and art form with its own language, syntax and codes and on the process of adaptation--a growing area of study, given Hollywood's continuing interest in working with comic book superheroes.

Book The Silver Age of Comic Book Art

Download or read book The Silver Age of Comic Book Art written by Arlen Schumer and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmine Infantino. Steve Ditko. Jack Kirby. Gil Kane. Joe Kubert. Gene Colan. Jim Steranko. Neal Adams. Some of the greatest comic book artists of their generation, who created some of their greatest work during The Silver Age of Comics (circa1956-1970). They not only drew definitive versions of the medium’s greatest characters including The Flash, Batman, Captain America, Superman, Thor, Green Lantern, Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, Green Arrow and more— but set trends in the art of comic book storytelling. Now this popular and influential body of work, along with each artist’s thoughts, ideas and commentary, is presented in The Silver Age of Comic Book Art, a coffee table comic book art history book written and designed in a daringly different format by comic book historian and illustrator Arlen Schumer, and published in hardcover and digital/e-book editions by Archway Publishing (from Simon & Schuster). Dynamic spreads of the actual printed comic art, graphically enlarged, are integrated with comic-styled text, often by the artists themselves, that replaces the original comic book copy with more personalized prose that places the art firmly in the period it was created: the turbulent 1960s. By creating a comic book history book that reads like a comic book, Schumer succeeds spectacularly in making you see, as if for the first time, the comics you’ve been reading your whole life. “Arlen Schumer documents an important period in comic book history, told with an explosive format and stunning design. It reflects the kinetic rhythm of the era.” — Will Eisner (1917-2005), creator of The Spirit and the graphic novel A Contract with God "Through the years, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing many books that pay tribute to the art of comics, but Arlen Schumer has created an entirely new format in presenting the art and words of the artists. It's the most comprehensive and personal way a fan or colleague can learn what lies beneath the art. Arlen has found the perfect way to inform and entertain. It’s simply awesome —and the best representation of my work ever!” —Gene Colan (1926-2011), legendary comic book artist “A lovingly crafted tribute to the superhero comic of the 1960s, The Silver Age of Comic Book Art recaptures the four-color visionary surge of the era, its jet-age psychedelic rush of imagination and the titanic, luminous figures, both real and imaginary, that glittered in its firmament. For a brief moment in the late 20th century, it seemed as if the spirit of the age wore a vivid leotard, a chest emblem, and traveled in a strobing blur of speed lines. For anyone with any interest in or affection for that moment, this beautiful volume is indispensible.” — Alan Moore, author of Swamp Thing and Watchmen For more on The Silver Age of Comic Book Book Art, join Arlen’s Facebook group of the same name, and visit Arlen’s website: www.arlenschumer.com

Book Batman Arkham Shadow

Download or read book Batman Arkham Shadow written by Lewis McDonald and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2024-05-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Batman, the iconic Caped Crusader of Gotham City, transcends the boundaries of fiction to become a symbol of heroism, justice, and resilience. Created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, Batman made his debut in 1939 in Detective Comics No. 27, captivating audiences with his compelling origin story and enigmatic persona. Since then, Batman has evolved from a mere comic book character into a global cultural phenomenon, leaving an indelible mark on the collective consciousness of generations. At the core of Batman's allure lies his dual identity as Bruce Wayne, the wealthy philanthropist, and Batman, the masked vigilante. This dichotomy between the charismatic playboy and the brooding avenger adds depth and complexity to Batman's character, allowing audiences to explore themes of identity, trauma, and redemption through his captivating tales. Gotham City, with its sprawling metropolis and seedy underbelly, serves as the backdrop for Batman's adventures. A city plagued by crime, corruption, and despair, Gotham becomes a character in its own right, mirroring the darkness and chaos that lurks within Batman's own psyche. From the shadowy alleys of Crime Alley to the towering spires of Wayne Manor, Gotham serves as the canvas upon which Batman's crusade against injustice unfolds. Throughout his storied history, Batman has undergone numerous adaptations across various forms of media, each adding its own unique interpretation to the character's mythos. From the campy charm of the 1960s television series to the dark and gritty realism of Christopher Nolan's films, Batman has proven to be a character with remarkable versatility and staying power, appealing to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. One of the key factors behind Batman's enduring appeal is his lack of superhuman powers. Unlike many other superheroes, Batman relies solely on his intellect, physical prowess, and indomitable will to fight crime. This makes Batman a more relatable and accessible character, as his abilities are attainable through discipline and training rather than genetic mutation or divine intervention. In addition to his iconic portrayal in comic books and graphic novels, Batman has also made a significant impact in the world of film and television. Tim Burton's 1989 film Batman, starring Michael Keaton in the titular role, was a groundbreaking success that helped to redefine the superhero genre for a new generation of audiences. Since then, Batman has appeared in numerous films and television series, each contributing to his enduring legacy as a cultural icon. Beyond his fictional adventures, Batman's influence extends into the broader cultural conversation, inspiring countless works of art, literature, and scholarship. From academic analyses of his psychological motivations to fan art and cosplay conventions, Batman's presence can be felt in every corner of popular culture, serving as a source of inspiration and empowerment for fans around the world.

Book Superheroes and Identities

Download or read book Superheroes and Identities written by Mel Gibson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superheroes have been the major genre to emerge from comics and graphic novels, saturating popular culture with images of muscular men and sexy women. A major aspect of this genre is identity in the roles played by individuals, the development of identities through extended stories and in the ways the characters inspire audiences. This collection analyses stories from popular comics franchises such as Batman, Captain America, Ms Marvel and X-Men, alongside less well known comics such as Kabuki and Flex Mentallo. It explores what superhero narratives can reveal about our attitudes towards femininity, race, maternity, masculinity and queer culture. Using this approach, the volume asks questions such as why there are no black supervillains in mainstream comics, how second wave feminism and feminist film theory may help us to understand female comic book characters, the ways in which Flex Mentallo transcends the boundaries of straightness and gayness and how both fans and industry appropriate the sexual identity of superheroes. The book was originally published in a special issue of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics.

Chapters: Batman vehicles, Batsuit, Batman's utility belt, Bat-Signal, Batcycle, Batarang, Batboat, Batplane, Batcomputer, Batcopter, Redbird, Bat phone. Excerpt: The Batsuit (or Bat-Suit) is the costume of the fictional character Batman, a superhero appearing in DC Comics. Though the suit has been drawn many different ways by different artists, and the stories themselves have described Batman as modifying the details of his costume from time to time, it is most often depicted as consisting of a scalloped cape, a bat-like cowl, a pair of gloves, boots, a yellow utility belt, and dark briefs over a tight-fitting body suit with the image of a bat emblazoned on the chest, either as a part of a yellow ellipse or black entirely. Batman wears this costume both to conceal his identity, and to frighten criminals. Most versions of the Batsuit incorporate some form of body armor, and often night-vision, gas filters, and other aids to combat effectiveness or protection. All versions of the outfit incorporate a utility belt containing a variety of crimefighting equipment. While brooding in his study over how to be a more effective crime fighter, Bruce Wayne saw a bat come through his window (in the earliest Detective Comics portrayal simply flying in an open window, in Post-Crisis continuity such as Batman: Year One, dramatically crashing through the glass). Seeing that "criminals are a superstitious, cowardly lot," Bruce adopts the persona of a bat in order to conceal his identity and strike fear into his adversaries. Subsequent origin tales have had Bruce terrified by bats as a child, and observing a bat costume worn by his father at a costume ball, but the primary impetus of his decision to adopt the bat persona has always been the incident of the bat coming in the window of his study. It is as a result of this incident that the...
