Download or read book Batchelor s Golf Stories written by Gerald Batchelor and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-09-09 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Golf is a funny game ... Many books have been written on the art of playing Golf, but few have attempted to give any record of the subtle humour which belongs to all sports of Scottish origin, and to Golf in particular.' So said the original blurb when first published in 1914, and though a large number of titles have since appeared, mining the inherent wit, intemperance and pratfalls of golf, it is enlightening to return to Gerald Batchelor's original. Golf Stories is a collection of original short stories, jokes, anecdotes, sketches, dialogues and parodies, all illustrated with suitably baggy-trousered line drawings by E. W. Mitchell. It includes among many other items the maxims of Foozler Minimus, a golfing Roman legionary (Mens agitat molem: 'Some men get annoyed with a molehill'), and 'The Rules - Revised', which states 'Casual water is any temporary accumulation of water - undiluted with whiskey'. Little has changed and so much has changed. The book is an essential addition to the library of any golfer.

Book excerpt: Ever since that fateful day several hundred years ago when a Scottish shepherd first struck a rock with a shillelagh, perhaps no single athletic pursuit has brought man more joy and frustration, more fulfillment and utter despair than the game of golf. It has been said by many that it is a microcosm of life itself—a beautiful game which tests the mind, body, and spirit. As a testament to that, there has been no shortage of inspired writing on the topic, as golf has long caught the interest and imagination of some of the world’s finest and most celebrated writers. Contributors include P. G. Wodehouse, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bernard Darwin, Ring Lardner, Horace Hutchinson, Charles E. Van Loan, A. A. Milne, Francis Ouimet, and many more.

Download or read book Confession of a Buddhist Atheist written by Stephen Batchelor and published by Random House. This book was released on 2010-03-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does Buddhism require faith? Can an atheist or agnostic follow the Buddha’s teachings without believing in reincarnation or organized religion? This is one man’s confession. In his classic Buddhism Without Beliefs, Stephen Batchelor offered a profound, secular approach to the teachings of the Buddha that struck an emotional chord with Western readers. Now, with the same brilliance and boldness of thought, he paints a groundbreaking portrait of the historical Buddha—told from the author’s unique perspective as a former Buddhist monk and modern seeker. Drawing from the original Pali Canon, the seminal collection of Buddhist discourses compiled after the Buddha’s death by his followers, Batchelor shows us the Buddha as a flesh-and-blood man who looked at life in a radically new way. Batchelor also reveals the everyday challenges and doubts of his own devotional journey—from meeting the Dalai Lama in India, to training as a Zen monk in Korea, to finding his path as a lay teacher of Buddhism living in France. Both controversial and deeply personal, Stephen Batchelor’s refreshingly doctrine-free, life-informed account is essential reading for anyone interested in Buddhism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating, richly illustrated exploration of the poignant origins of Rudyard Kipling’s world-famous children’s classic From "How the Leopard Got Its Spots" to "The Elephant’s Child," Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories have delighted readers across the world for more than a century. In this original study, John Batchelor explores the artistry with which Kipling created the Just So Stories, using each tale as an entry point into the writer’s life and work—including the tragedy that shadows much of the volume, the death of his daughter Josephine. Batchelor details the playful challenges the stories made to contemporary society. In his stories Kipling played with biblical and other stories of creation and imagined fantastical tales of animals' development and man's discovery of literacy. Richly illustrated with original drawings and family photographs, this account reveals Kipling’s public and private lives—and sheds new light on a much-loved and tremendously influential classic.
