Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ...the same sort of opportunities that are given to the forward in a forward "tip-off." He may take a long shot for basket, he may carry the ball to the basket on a fast dribble, or he may pass it to one of his four teammates. These are the fundamental plays in basket-ball, and while there are numberless variations following the initial reception of the ball by either the forward or guard, four signals will take care of these four starting plays. It used to be a custom for the center to give the signal for each play. He might place his right hand on his right hip when the right forward was to receive the ball or might scratch his head with his right hand when the right guard was to receive the ball, or he might call a number. Some ten or twelve years ago the writer introduced a system which has been copied very extensively in signal giving, which was to have one of the forwards give the signal. This is a much better procedure, as the forward is not in a position to-attract the attention of the opponents as readily as is the center. Signals are not so easily detected, and he is seen by all his teammates. The signals may be given with the hands, feet or head. As a suggestive measure let us take one group of signals: If the right foot is advanced the "tip-off" may be to the right forward. If the left foot is extended the "tip-off" may be to the left forward. If the feet are close together the "tip-off" may be to the right guard, or if the feet are wide apart the "tip off" may be to the left guard. Additional signals indicating shift plays may be given by the position of the hands, slapping the right leg or the left leg, or touching the head or touching the right shoulder. If these...
